Janet Jackson reveals first official photo of son Eissa amid marital breakup, ‘secret child’ controversy

On April 14, 2017, singer/actress Janet Jackson revealed on her Twitter account the first official photo of her son Eissa, who was born on January 3, 2017. The accompanying message read: “My baby and me after nap time.” It was her first tweet since November 2016.

The photo reveal comes less than a week after representatives for Jackson confirmed that she and her third husband, billionaire businessman Wissam Al Mana (the father of Eissa), are separated. They reportedly began living apart before the baby was born. Jackson and Al Mana got married in  2012.

In April 2016, Jackson (who is 50) cancelled the remaining dates on her “Unbreakable” world tour, and announced it was because she was starting a family.  She has not  responded to reports that have been going on for years that she supposedly has a “secret” daughter, who was  allegedly born in early 1986 and was allegedly put up for adoption as a baby.  Jackson’s first husband, singer James DeBarge, is claiming that he is the father of the alleged daughter.

Jackson and DeBarge were married from September 1984 to November 1985. Their marriage ended in an annulment. Since 2016, DeBarge has been giving interviews claiming that Jackson gave birth to their daughter after he and Jackson broke up. Members of the DeBarge family appear to be divided over the truth of these claims, since some have given interviews to back up DeBarge’s story, while other family members say he is lying. In March 2017, a Philadelphia woman named Tiffany Whyte went to a tabloid to claim that she is Jackson and DeBarge’s daughter, although a DNA test has not been done to prove or disprove that claim.

Meanwhile, since the news broke that Jackson and Al Mana are headed for divorce, Jackson has been hit with a firestorm of backlash from some people on the Internet who are calling her a “gold digger” and worse. The people making derogatory comments about Jackson cite tabloid reports that she signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Al Mana to get about $500 million if they divorce after at least five years of marriage and have a child together. There is also speculation that there could be a custody battle over the child.  Jackson’s fans and her critics have been getting into a war of words about this complicated issue.

It’s important to remember that the breakup of a marriage is painful, no matter how much money is involved. Jackson and Al Mana’s marriage was very private, so the general public really doesn’t know the details about their relationship.  In fact, all of her marriages have been secretive. She and DeBarge eloped and kept their marriage a secret from the public for months. Jackson and her second husband, Rene Elizondo, were secretly married from 1991 to 2000, and the world didn’t know they were married until their divorce filing was announced in 2000. And now, Jackson’s third secretive marriage has come to an end. For the sake of their child, if Eissa is loved and brought up well,  and he turns out to be a happy and caring person, that is the best possible outcome.

Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson search for a mythical culture in ‘The Lost City of Z’

Based on author David Grann’s non-fiction bestseller, “The Lost City of Z” tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (played by Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as “savages,” the determined Fawcett—supported by his devoted wife Nina (played by Sienna Miller), son Jack (played by Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp Corporal Henry Costin (played by Robert Pattinson)—returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. An epically scaled tale of courage and passion, told in writer/director James Gray’s classic filmmaking style, “The Lost City of Z” is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and a conflicted adventurer driven to the verge of obsession. “The Lost City of Z” had its world premiere at the 2016 New York Film Festival, where Gray, Pattinson, Miller, Holland and co-star Angus Macfadyen gathered for a Q&A after a press screening.

PBS ‘Chefs Flight’ spotlight in ‘American Masters’ includes documentaries on James Beard and Jacques Pépin

April 13, 2017

by Carla Hay

PBS is launching “Chefs Flight”as part of the network’s “American Masters” series that will include new documentaries on culinary icons James Beard and Jacques Pépin.

“James Beard: America’s First Foodie” premieres in most market on May 19, 2017, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. (Check local listings.) The program chronicles a century of food through the story of Beard (1903-1985), who was a pioneer celebrity chef and author. Immediately after the Beard documentary, PBS will televise a rebroadcast of “American Masters – Julia! America’s Favorite Chef” at 10 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, “Jacques Pépin: The Art of Craft” (narrated by Stanley Tucci) premieres in most markets on May 26 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. (Check local listings.) Immediately after the Pépin documentary, PBS will have an encore presentation of “American Masters – Alice Waters and her Delicious Revolution” at 10 p.m. ET.

According to a PBS press release: Among the many highlights in the Beard documentary are Daniel Boulud and restaurant critic Gael Greene telling how Beard helped start Citymeals on Wheels; Jacques Pépin reminiscing about cooking with Beard; Martha Stewart sharing how Beard’s cookbooks influenced her; Ted Allen disclosing Beard’s challenges being an “out” gay man at a time when same-sex sexual activity was illegal; chefs Jonathan Waxman and Larry Forgione reflecting on Beard’s mentorship and its impact on their career; Wolfgang Puck recounting how he helped found the James Beard Foundation; Alice Waters explaining how Beard discovered Chez Panisee; chef Jeremiah Tower offering insight into Beard’s relationship with Marion Cunningham; chef Naomi Pomery demonstrating how to make the famous “James Beard’s Onion Sandwich”; and next generation chefs such as Marc Forgione, Greg Higgins, and Pomeroy discussing how Beard’s influence is still felt today. James Beard Award Foundation president Susan Ungaro and executive vice president Mitchell Davis also appear in the documentary.

Dubbed the “Dean of American Cookery” by The New York Times, Beard … spoke of the importance of localism and sustainability long before those terms had entered the culinary vernacular. He was a forerunner of the farm-to-table movement and helped create the iconic Four Seasons concept and menu. He was the first chef to host his own television show, “I Love to Eat,” which debuted on NBC in 1946, and taught not only women but men how to cook. He also had a cooking school that he operated out of his New York apartment.

Beard authored 22 cookbooks, penned a syndicated newspaper column and wrote countless magazine articles. He is credited with introducing Julia Child to the New York culinary scene, and he later becoming a best friend to her.

The James Beard Awards Gala and Reception are considered the “Oscars” of the food-service industry. The 2017 ceremony will take place  May 1 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jesse Tyler Ferguson is hosting the show. The complete list of nominations are here.

Mariah Carey partners with Epic Records to launch Butterfly MC Records

Grammy-winning star Mariah Carey has partnered with Sony Music’s Epic Records to launch Butterfly MC Records. Carey has been signed to Epic since 2015. Terms of the agreement call for additional repertoire by the artist, beginning with a new studio album expected later this year.

Epic Records chairman/CEO Antonio “L.A. Reid,” who signed Carey to Epic, has a long history with Carey. When he was chairman of Universal Music’s Island Def Jam, he helped mastermind her 2005 album “The Emancipation of Mimi,” which included her blockbuster hit “We Belong Together.” Prior to signing with Island in 2002, Carey had a short-lived stint at Virgin Records, which released her “Glitter” soundtrack album in 2001. She started her recording career in 1990 with Sony Music’s Columbia Records, which was then headed by her first ex-husband, Tommy Mottola.

Reid commented in a press release: “To continue working with Mariah Carey at Epic has been another rewarding chapter of my career. Mariah’s incomparable talents as a singer, with her vocal range that is nothing short of legendary, are matched by her brilliance as a songwriter, producer, and performer par excellence.  Mariah’s chart records have established her enduring place in music history, a position that is cherished and supported by her loyal fans worldwide. I look forward to building upon all of Mariah’s success for years to come.”

Carey added, “I am putting my heart and soul into making more new music,” said Mariah. “I am so thrilled for this next chapter and to continue working with, and for, everyone that I love.”

In 2016, Carey launched her first Las Vegas residency, did a successful world tour, and starred in a reality show called “Mariah’s World,” which got mixed reviews and mediocre ratings. Her personal life has also been in the news. Her divorce from second husband Nick Cannon was finalized in November 2016, around the same time her engagement to Australian businessman James Packer ended. She then moved on to her backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, but several media outlets are reporting that the romance has also ended after Carey and Tanaka dated each other for about five months. The ex-couple reportedly split because he was jealous of Carey’s close relationship with Cannon. The former spouses share custody of their twins Monroe and Moroccan.

Carey is doing a North American tour with Lionel Richie in the summer of 2017, after the tour was postponed this spring due to Richie having to recover from a knee injury.
