2019 Tribeca Film Festival: Tribeca X: A Day of Conversations debuts to celebrate intersection of entertainment and advertising

The Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, announced today that it will debut Tribeca X: A Day of Conversations, a look at storytelling at the intersection of advertising and entertainment, during the 2019 Festival on Friday, April 26. The event will bring together industry leaders and creators from brands, agencies, and filmmaking to examine the achievements that are adventurous and distinctive in their work. Participants include keynote speaker P&G Chief Brand Officer Marc Pritchard; AT&T Communications Chief Brand Officer, Fiona Carter; Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard; TBWA Worldwide Chief Diversity Officer Doug Melville; President & CEO of The Ad Council Lisa Sherman; actress/creator Natasha Lyonne, and more. Tribeca X, sponsored by PwC, takes place during the 18th Tribeca Film Festival, which runs April 24-May 5.

The Tribeca X: A Day of Conversations program is an extension of the 4th annual Tribeca X Awards which celebrates the best artist and brand collaborations of the past year. For the first time this year, Tribeca X expands from one award to four: best feature film, short film, episodic, and VR. Also announced today are the finalists for the 2019 Tribeca X Awards representing brands such as The Carlsberg Foundation, Patagonia, PepsiCo Content Studio, AT&T, YETI, Girls Who Code, HP, The North Face, Impossible Foods/White Castle, Stand Up To Cancer/HP, and Diageo. This year, the selected finalists’ work will be screened during the Festival, with VR available to experience during the Tribeca X day event at The Tribeca Festival Hub at Spring Studios.

The winning projects will be chosen by a jury that includes Kinjil Mathur, Chief Marketing Officer of Squarespace; John Osborn, Chief Executive Officer of OMD USA; Nabil Elderkin, Film Director; Patrick Milling-Smith, Co-Founder/CEO of SMUGGLER; Kim Gehrig, Director; Jason Kreher, Creative Director, Entertainment and Editorial at Wieden+Kennedy.

“As brands continue to push the boundaries of creativity and tell deeper stories, we are excited to debut this event and bring leaders in entertainment and advertising together at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival,” said Paula Weinstein, EVP of Tribeca Enterprises.

Marc Pritchard is responsible for P&G’s brand building worldwide. Founder Spotlight: Yvon Chouinard, Founder, Patagonia
Patagonia is recognized as one of the most mission-driven brands in the country. What most people don’t know is that the reach of this California-based retailer extends far beyond brick and mortar stores, blurring the lines between commerce and activism. Patagonia is an award-winning film company, an emerging leader in the organic food industry, and a fearless supporter of environmentalist causes, currently suing the Trump administration in an effort to protect Bears Ears National Monument. Patagonia’s founder Yvon Chouinard will share the story behind the brands most recent feature-length film Artifishal: The Road to Extinction is Paved with Good Intentions and the company’s mission to save our home planet.

Creator Spotlight: Natasha Lyonne
Celebrated Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne stepped behind the camera in 2019 for her critically-acclaimed Netflix show Russian Doll. Her directorial debut, in fact, came in 2017 with the short film Cabiria, Charity, Chastity for fashion brand KENZO’s 2017 campaign. In this one-on-one conversation, Lyonne will share the story behind her stunning KENZO collaboration and her point of view on the trends of brand supported filmmaking. She’ll discuss how her creative approach to a brand partnership differs from her traditional film and TV work, as well as the unique opportunities that can be created when artists, independent filmmakers and influential brands join forces.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ breaks pre-sale records, crashes numerous movie ticket sites; Marvel 22 marathon announced

Marvel superhero fever has reached new heights as Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” (which arrives in cinemas on April 26, 2019) broke first-day pre-sale records for Fandango and Atom Tickets. When the movie’s tickets went on sale at 8 a.m. ET on April 2, 2019, demand was so high that it apparently caused website crashes for AMC Theatres (the largest cinema chain in the United States), Alamo Drafthouse, Fandango and Atom Tickets. AMC Theatres’ website was offline for at least five hours during the crash. Numerous customers who normally would have purchased tickets online had to go to movie theaters to get their tickets.

According to an Atom Tickets press release: “‘Avengers: Endgame” has set a new record on Atom Tickets for the best first day of sales in less than half a day (and ticket purchases are ongoing). So far, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has outsold the previous record held by ‘Aquaman,’ by four times the amount … To date, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has sold three times more tickets on Atom in the first hour of pre-sales than ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ did last year. The first hour of pre-sales for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ sets a new record for Atom Tickets, outpacing ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ which round out the top 3 movies with the best first hour of presales.”

While supplies last, Atom is offering an exclusive “Avengers: Endgame” movie poster designed by Australian artist Bosslogic as a gift with a ticket purchase. Bosslogic. Meanwhile, Fandango announced that “Avengers: Endgame” now holds the Fandango record as the biggest-selling movie for first-day pre-sale tickets, This Fandango record was previously held by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which now holds Fandango’s No. 2 spot, followed by 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at No. 3; 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” at No. 4; and 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” at No. 5.

“Avengers: Endgame” has a superhero cast that includes Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (played by Chris Evans), Black Widow (played by Scarlett Joahnsson), Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner), War Machine (played by Don Cheadle), Ant-Man (played by Paul Rudd) and Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson). “Avengers: Endgame,” which clocks in at a little more than three hours, is expected to be reveal what happened to all the superheroes who “died” in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Brother duo Anthony Russo and Joe Russo directed “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain America: Civil War” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

“Marvel 22” Marathon

Adding to the Marvel superhero madness, AMC Theaters, Alamo Drafthouse,  Cinemark and Megaplex Theatres are hosting “Marvel 22,” a 59-hour marathon in select cities showing all 22 of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, from 2008’s “Iron Man” to 2019’s “Avengers: Infinity War.” AMC and Cinemark are charging $125 per ticket, while Alamo Drafthouse is charging $135 per ticket, and Megaplex is charging $99 per ticket. The ticket price includes some concession discount offers and exclusive Marvel memorabilia. The marathon begins on April 23, 2019, and start times vary by theater.

2019 CinemaCon: What to expect at this year’s event

CinemaCon, the annual convention for the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), will be held April 1 to April 4, 2019, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. About 5,000 people attend the event, which gives movie studios the chance to showcase what they expect to be their biggest hits of the year.

A major change to this year’s event is that Sony Pictures Entertainment and 20th Century Fox will not be giving presentations. Movie studios scheduled to give their presentations at the event are STX Films and Warner Bros. Pictures on April 2; Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures on April 3; and Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate on April 4.

Independent film studio Neon will promote its music-based drama “Wild Rose” with a screening of the movie on April 1 and a “Wild Rose” party on April 2. Other movies that will be screened in their entirety at CinemaCon 2019 will be Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Blinded by the Light” on April 2, Amazon’s “Late Night” on April 3 and Lionsgate’s “Long Shot” on April 4.

CinemaCon culminates with the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards ceremony, which will take place April 4.

One of the most respected actors in the entertainment industry, Emmy-winning “Boardwalk Empire” star Steve Buscemi has played a wide range of characters in movies and television. His most memorable films include 1992’s “Reservoir Dogs,” 1996’s “Fargo” and 2001’s “Ghost World.” He has also voiced several roles in hit animated movies such as 2017’s “The Boss Baby,” and the “Hotel Transylvania” films. Buscemi’s 2019 film is the horror comedy, co-starring Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton.

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Jamie Lee Curtis has made her mark in the film industry, beginning with her starring role in her movie debut: the 1978 horror classic “Halloween.” She has starred in multiple “Halloween” sequels, most notably 2018’s “Halloween,” which made her the first woman over the age of 60 to star in a movie that debuted at No. 1 in the United States. Curtis’ other well-known movies include the 1980 horror flick “Prom Night,” the 1988 comedy “A Fish Called Wanda,” the 1994 action film “True Lies” and the 2003 remake of the comedy “Freaky Friday.” Curtis has two films due out in 2019: the crime drama “Knives Out” and the comedy “Senior Entourage.”

Kevin Hart is one of the busiest people in showbiz, with starring roles in movies, TV and Web series, in addition to headlining successful arena tours. The year 2019 started out with the dramedy “The Upside” (starring Hart and Bryan Cranston) debuting at No. 1 in the United States. His 2018 comedy film “Night School” was also a hit.

“Terminator: Dark Fate” is the 2019 entry in the longtime “Terminator” film series. “Terminator: Dark Fate” stands out from the rest of the films in the series because the cast is led by women: Linda Hamilton (who starred in the first two “Terminator” movies), Natalie Reyes and Mackenzie Davis. Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron play unlikely love interests in the 2019 political comedy film “Long Shot.” Rogen is best known for his comedic roles in movies (such as 2007’s “Knocked Up,” 2008’s “Pineapple Express” and the “Neighbors” films), while Theron does mostly dramatic and action movies, including 2005’s “Monster” (for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress), 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” and 2017’s “Atomic Blonde.”

2019 NAACP Image Awards: ‘Black Panther’ wins the most prizes

With eight prizes, the blockbuster superhero film “Black Panther” was the top winner for the 50th annual NAACP Image Awards.”Black Panther” was the leading contender going in the ceremony, by having 12 nominations. The biggest awards were presented in a live ceremony on TV One at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 30, 2019. The majority of the show’s prizes were given during a NAACP Image Awards non-televised dinner in Los Angeles on March 29, 2019. Anthony Anderson hosted the televised NAACP Image Awards ceremony for the sixth consecutive year. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People produces the awards, which are give to those are outstanding representations for people of color in entertainment. Eligible nominations are for entertainment that was released or premiered in 2018.

The awards for “Black Panther” were for Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture (Chadwick Boseman), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Michael B. Jordan) and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture (Letitia Wright).

Beyoncé was named Entertainer of the Year, while her husband Jay-Z received the President’s Award, a non-competitive category. In other non-competitive categories, politician Maxine Waters received the Chairman Award, while singer/songwriter Ne-Yo received the Black & Positively Golden Music Award.

In the TV categories, the sitcom “Black-ish” reigned supreme, winning five of out its nine nominations: Outstanding Comedy Series; Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series (Anthony Anderson); Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series (Tracee Ellis Ross); Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Marcus Scribner); Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Marsai Martin).

Actor/comedian Chris Rock, who presented the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, poked fun at “Empire” co-star Jussie Smollett and the controversy over Smollett’s claim that he was physically attacked by two homophobic racists in Chicago on January 29, 2019. It’s a claim that led to Smollett being arrested and charged on March 8 with felony disorderly conduct after police and Chicago prosecutors said that Smollett staged the attack and lied to the police about it. The charges were dropped on March 26.

Rock said on stage: “They said no Jussie Smollett jokes. Yeah, I know, I know. What a waste of light skin. You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be outta here! I would be fucking running Hollywood! What the hell was he thinking? Jussie … you ain’t getting no respect from me.”

Smollett and the other cast members from “Empire” did not attend the ceremony or the pre-ceremony dinner. Smollett was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, but lost to Jesse Williams of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Meanwhile, Taraji P. Henson of “Empire” won the prize for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.

In the recording categories, Ella Mai won the most awards (three): Outstanding New Artist; Outstanding Song – Contemporary (for “Boo’d Up”); and Outstanding Album (for “Ella Mai”).

Rolling Stones postpone ‘No Filter’ 2019 tour in North America due to Mick Jagger medical problem

The Rolling Stones have postponed all of their North American stadium concerts that were scheduled from April to July 2019, because lead singer Mick Jagger is being treated for an undisclosed medical problem. Tickets for the band’s postponed stadium concerts on the “No Filter” tour will be valid for the rescheduled dates. However, the Rolling Stones have canceled their headlining performance on May 5 at the 2019 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

A spokesperson for the band issued this statement: “Mick Jagger has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time as he needs medical treatment. The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible.”

Jagger added in a statement, “I hate letting our fans down and I’m hugely disappointed to have to postpone the tour but am looking forward to getting back on stage as soon as I can.”

In an Instagram post, Jagger made a similar statement: “I’m sorry to our fans in America & Canada with tickets. I really hate letting you down like this. I’m devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can. Once again, huge apologies to everyone.”

Rolling Stones rhythm guitarist Keith Richards tweeted: “A big disappointment for everyone but things need to be taken care of and we will see you soon. Mick, we are always there for you!”

Rolling Stones lead guitarist Ronnie Wood tweeted: “We’ll miss you over the next few weeks, but we’re looking forward to seeing you all again very soon. Here’s to Mick ~ thanks for your supportive messages it means so much to us.”

The Rolling Stones ended their seven-year hiatus from touring in 2012, the year of the band’s 50th anniversary. Since 2012, the Stones have done multiple tours, with performances in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Most of the Rolling Stones’ North American concerts in the 21st century have been at arenas, which hold an average of 15,000 to 20,000 people. Stadiums hold an average of 40,000 to 60,000 people. The “No Filter” 2019 shows in North America would have been the Rolling Stones’ first stadium tour of North America since the 1997 “Bridges to Babylon” tour.

In other Rolling Stones news, a 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos restoration of the band’s 1968 TV special “The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus” will have rare screenings in select Dolby cinemas on April 1, 3, 4 and 5, 2019. (Dates and showtimes vary per theater.) The special, which remained unreleased until 1996, was hosted by the Rolling Stones, and featured performances from the Rolling Stones, John Lennon, the Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull and a one-time-only “supergroup” called the Dirty Mac, consisting of Lennon, Richards, Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell (drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience) and Yoko Ono. April 1, 2019 UPDATE: Jagger’s medical issue is that he has to undergo surgery to repair a heart valve, according to the Drudge Report. He is scheduled to have the surgery in New York City during the first week of April 2019.

2019 IDCon: talent lineup and ticket information announced

Investigation Discovery (ID) has announced that its fourth annual IDCon, an event for ID fans, will take place May 18, 2019, at Center 415 in New York City. The theme of the event is “Dangerous Minds.” Tickets, which are $75 each, go on sale at EventBrite on April 5 at 10 a.m. ET. According to ID, all proceeds for IDCon will be donated to New York’s Silver Shield Foundation, an organization which provides educational support to families of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.

ID’s “Scene of the Crime” host Tony Harris will emcee the event for the third year in a row. ID show hosts Joe Kenda (“Homicide Hunter”) and John Walsh and his son Callahan Walsh (“In Pursuit With John Walsh”) will also be in attendance for panel discussions. There will also be meet-and-greet opportunities and more talent appearances to be announced. Fans are encouraged to get the latest updates about IDCon at ID’s Crime Obsession Facebook Group. Updates about IDCon, exclusive web content, bonus material and news reports can also be found on ID’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, as well as ID’s true-crime blog, CrimeFeed. This is the first year that IDCon will take place at Center 415, which has a seating capacity of about 600 people. In its first three years, IDCon took place at New York City’s Altman Building, which has a seating capacity of about 300 people.

The NAACP today announced that globally dominant pop culture icon Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter will receive the prestigious President’s Award during the 50th NAACP Image Awards. The President’s Award is presented in recognition of a special achievement and distinguished public service with previous recipients including Jesse Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Soledad O’Brien, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and Muhammad Ali among others. 2019 American Music Awards: date and location announced

ABC and Dick Clark Productions announced today that the “2019 American Music Awards,” the world’s largest fan-voted awards show, will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 24 (8:00-11:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.
