NBC will celebrate man’s best friend in the 17th anniversary edition of the family favorite holiday special “The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®” airing on Thanksgiving Day (noon-2 p.m. in all time zones), Nov. 22, following the telecast of NBC’s “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.”
“The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®” will be hosted by award-winning TV personality, author and Broadway star John O’Hurley (“Seinfeld,” “Dancing with the Stars”). Returning to offer expert analysis is American Kennel Club-licensed judge David Frei, who has officiated at dog shows worldwide and, alongside O’Hurley, has co-hosted the competition since its inception in 2002. NBC Sports correspondent Mary Carillo will report from inside the show ring, and former U.S. Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir will offer behind-the-scenes access as digital contributors.
“For 17 years, the ‘National Dog Show Presented by Purina®’ has been at the forefront of the purebred dog world,” said O’Hurley. “I’m proud to be a part of a legacy that not only celebrates such a rich history of dog breeds, but also being part of a tradition that entertains everyone from 4 to 94.”
Two new American Kennel Club-sanctioned breeds will be included in this year’s competition – the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (sporting group) and the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen (hound group) – bringing the total recognized breeds to 192. Since 2003, 45 new breeds have been introduced to the event.
Last year, Newton, a 3-year-old Brussels Griffon (toy group), took home the Best in Show title among the seven group winners. Newton impressed the judges with his superior condition and form, beautiful coat and loving personality.
A beloved holiday tradition for families across the nation, the broadcast reached more than 22 million viewers last year. Over the last two years the telecast has delivered its two biggest audiences in its 17-year run on NBC. The National Dog Show is part of a five-hour block of family programing on NBC, offering the country’s 65 million pet-owning households a full afternoon of fun entertainment while raising money for canine-related causes. In its unique format, the Kennel Club of Philadelphia offers an open environment for the esteemed event and remains one of the only “benched” dog shows, displaying all 2,000 competing purebred canines to the visiting public.
Continuing the family fun, NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will present a Thanksgiving Day marathon (beginning 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT) of “The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®,” featuring all five Best in Show winners from 2013-17.
In celebration of Thanksgiving and the National Dog Show, Purina is inviting pet owners across the nation to share why they are thankful for their pet. From Nov. 9-25, for every unique post shared on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram that includes @Purina and #DogThanking, Purina will donate $1 (up to $25,000) to Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation Pets and Vets program. This amazing program helps pair shelter pets with veterans coping with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety and other service-related challenges as they transition back to civilian life following their service.

After 18 years of showcasing independent fiction, documentary, and short films at the LA Film Festival, Film Independent announced today that its Board of Directors has voted to shift the energy and resources of the organization from the Festival structure to a variety of year-round events aimed at building community and broadening its support of visual storytellers.
These programs will include a number of new initiatives to be announced in coming months as well as several that have traditionally taken place during the LA Film Festival—among them, The Portal, a showcase of VR and immersive storytelling, produced in partnership with Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television; a two day event around inclusion in the film industry, launched in 2013 by Stephanie Allain and continued by Hasan Foster; Fast Track, a film financing market supporting both fiction and non-fiction projects; and Future Filmmakers, which features work by L.A. high-school filmmakers.
“We took a hard look at the healthy growth of Film Independent’s year-round programs and events over the past six years: the Spirit Awards, our film series curated by Elvis Mitchell, membership, labs, workshops, filmmaker grants and international programs,” said Mary Sweeney, Chair of the Film Independent Board of Directors. “In the end, we concluded that the organization should explore a more nimble, sustainable form of exhibiting and celebrating independent film artists year round.”
“While we are very proud of what we’ve accomplished with the LA Film Festival over the past eighteen years, the truth is that it has struggled to thrive, and the time has come for us to try something new,” said Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent. “We are all deeply grateful to Jennifer Cochis for her vision, passion, and creativity and we’re enormously proud of the Festival that she oversaw these past two years. We remain committed to serving filmmakers and film audiences across Los Angeles.”
As a result of discontinuing the Festival in its present form, the nonprofit arts organization will eliminate three full-time staff positions. Film Independent will continue with its current suite of programs and events, including: The Film Indepenent Spirit Awards; Film Independent Presents, curated by Elvis Mitchell; Global Media Makers, an innovative mentoring initiative for international visual storytellers; Project Involve, the 25-year-old mentorship program for filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds; as well as its annual suite of Filmmaker Labs and the Film Independent Forum and Directors Close-Up.

“The Favourite”leads the list of nominations for the 2018 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) announced this morning by British actors Ellie Bamber and Arinzé Kene at the Everyman Cinema, King’s Cross. Yorgos Lanthimos’s black comedy about the 18th century court of Queen Anne is recognized for Best British Independent Film, Best Director sponsored by Broadsword Event House and Best Screenplay sponsored by BBC Films.Olivia Colman is nominated for Best Actress sponsored by MAC, with her co-stars in the female-led ensemble, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, competing in the Best Supporting Actress category, Weisz also receives a Best Actress nomination for Sapphic drama “Disobedience.” “The Favourite” also sweeps the technical categories, newly introduced for the 2017 awards, with nominations for seven of the nine awards, including Best Production Design, Best Cinematography supported by Blackmagic Design, Best Make-up & Hair Design and Best Costume Design.

The Variety Award recognizes a director, actor, writer or producer who has made a global impact and helped focus the international spotlight on the UK. Dick Clark Productions announced today that Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” will receive this year’s Hollywood Film Award, and Pixar Animation Studios’ “Incredibles 2” will receive the Hollywood Animation Award at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards, taking place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton. Both films received wide critical acclaim and broke box office records this year. “Black Panther” became a cultural phenomenon that has broken boundaries and created a movement, gracing the cover of Time Magazine. “Black Panther” had the highest grossing non-sequel opening weekend of all time, showing that diversity and representation in front of and behind the camera can equal global box-office success. “Incredibles 2” marked the biggest opening weekend in history for an animated film, grossing more than $1.2 billion globally to date and garnering widespread critical acclaim. Two-time Oscar winner writer/director Brad Bird’s follow up to 2004’s Oscar-winning “The Incredibles” expands upon the original’s daring concept of a family of Supers who struggle against society’s fickle embrace while tasked with stopping a devious plot to undermine the public’s belief and faith in government and national security. ABOUT THE HONOREES “Black Panther” is director Ryan Coogler’s take on a modern African hero and a utopian vision of what an uncolonized Africa might look like. When Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becomes king of the hidden, technologically advanced kingdom Wakanda, he is forced to defend his throne against rogue mercenary Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Two years after fleeing his home in war-torn Syria, Ayham has made a new home for himself in Germany. Dick Clark Productions announced today that the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards will bestow the Hollywood Documentary Award to Live Nation Productions’ “Believer,” the story of Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds as he comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation. Reynolds, who also served as Executive Producer on the film, will be accepting the award at the ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton. As part of the ceremony, Reynolds, producer Tim Edgar and award-winning composer Hans Zimmer will also take the HFA stage to deliver a performance of “Believer’s”empowering track “Skipping Stones.” The song is one of two original tracks that are featured in the documentary. Reynolds teamed up with the film-score legend for this heartfelt track to promote change, love and acceptance of the LGBTQ community within the Mormon Church.

The Hollywood Film Awards, honoring the most acclaimed films and actors while previewing highly anticipated films and talent for the upcoming year, also acknowledges artists in the categories of Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Composing, Costume Design, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Makeup & Hairstyling. In its 22-year history, more than 320 of the world’s biggest stars and filmmakers have been highlighted at the Hollywood Film Awards and more than 130 of the honorees have gone on to garner Oscar nominations and/or wins.
ABOUT THE HONOREES
“Believer” is a film based on Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds who comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation. Since 2008, teen suicide rates in Utah have skyrocketed, which many people attribute to the Mormon church’s official stance regarding same-sex relationships. Director Don Argott follows Dan and openly gay former Mormon Tyler Glenn, lead singer of Neon Trees, as they decide to create LoveLoud, a music and spoken-word festival designed to spark dialogue between the church and members of the LGBTQ community.
Dan Reynolds, a third generation Las Vegas native, is lead singer for the Grammy winning band Imagine Dragons. Born to a family of nine children, Dan grew up writing and recording music before beginning his studies at Brigham Young University and later UNLV. Dan left his schooling to form Imagine Dragons, which had its start making ends meet playing casinos and bars in Las Vegas before signing to KidinaKorner/Interscope Records. The band has since sold over 12 million albums and 35 million singles worldwide. In 2016, Dan formed Interscope imprint Night Street Records, whose first signing K.Flay was nominated for two 2018 Grammy Awards. Having publicly expressed his concern for the rising suicide rate in LGBTQ+ youth, Dan founded the LOVELOUD Foundation in 2017 to bring awareness to the growing crisis. Its mission is to bring communities together by igniting the vital conversation of what it means to unconditionally love, understand, accept, and support our LGBTQ+ family and friends. Dan also currently serves as a board member for The Tyler Robinson Foundation, a charity he co-founded which helps support pediatric cancer families in financial distress.

MTV is adding the hottest acts in music to its performance lineup for the “2018 MTV EMAs” with award-winning and internationally acclaimed rock band, Panic! At the Disco, 2018 Grammy Award®-winning “Best New Artist” Alessia Cara, world renowned DJ / producer Marshmello and breakout pop duo Jack & Jack.
Joining Marshmello onstage will be British band Bastille to perform Marshmello’s chart-topping single “Happier.” Since its release in August, “Happier” has reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Streaming Chart & Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales Chart and has more than 220 million streams on Spotify. It also hit #1 on the Top 15 Global Chart in Apple Music.
Marshmello will also be joined onstage by Anne-Marie to perform their platinum-certified track “FRIENDS” which is certified platinum in the US and UK and certified triple platinum in Canada.
Grammy nominated Panic! At the Disco will perform “High Hopes” from their sixth studio album “Pray for the Wicked.”
Alessia Cara will perform her new single “Trust My Lonely,” a track that follows up “Growing Pains,” released via Def Jam Recordings. Both tracks are slated to appear on Alessia’s upcoming second album, THE PAINS OF GROWING.
Jack & Jack will perform their new single “No One Compares To You,” a song that comes on the heels of their hit collaboration “Rise” with multi-platinum artist and producer Jonas Blue.
These artists join previously announced host and performer Hailee Steinfeld, as well as performers Nicki Minaj, Halsey, Rosalía and “Global Icon” award recipient Janet Jackson. Jackson will perform a medley of her greatest hits including her recent smash single, “Made for Now.”
Lindsay Lohan, Anitta, Debby Ryan, Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross are added to present awards at the show, joining Netflix stars Michael Peña and Diego Luna.
