2018 Comic-Con International: Adult Swim activations and exclusives

Adult Swim is headed back to San Diego Comic Con with a unique spin on a favorite summer pastime. Fans can ditch their sleeping bags and pack their enthusiasm for a weekend that is sure to make everyone a happy camper. In addition, Comic Con attendees will get a first look at all-new programming at celebrity-filled panels and enjoy free signings featuring series stars, creators and producers from audience-favorites Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros., FLCL, and Dream Corp LLC. 

Campers will experience the outdoors in a way that only Adult Swim could give them. Park entrance is free for fans 18+ and is right behind the convention center at 5th Avenue Landing and Convention Way, Thursday through Sunday, with exciting fan programming at night Thursday through Saturday.

Amenities of the park include all-new games like canoe races and archery contests, chainsaw-wielding wood carvers, merit badges and tasty eats from the hot dog roaster. Provided by State Farm ®, lockers will be on-site tokeep fans’ stuff safe while they jump in canoes to race other campers. Collectible merit badges can be earned by campers who make the most of their park experience. Look for Badge Badger and State Farm brand ambassadors, who will be awarding badges to stand-out campers who are best prepared for the con (think sunscreen and hydration!).

Also, new this year is the Camp Store, which will be open late and is a must for all campers to stock up on exclusive Adult Swim merchandise. A SDCC badge is required for purchase. Fans can find more information and register for access to the park at AdultSwimPresents.com.

Campers both in the park and all around the country will enjoy live broadcasts of staple streaming shows including FishCenter, Stupid Morning Bullshit, Williams Street Swap Shop, and more! Celebrity guests will be stopping by throughout the convention to chat all weekend long. The streams will be live starting at 3:00pm PT Thursday through Sunday and run late into the night. Fans stuck in line (or at home) can watch anywhere live at AdultSwim.com.

In true Adult Swim fashion, when the sun goes down, the fans can come and unwind with free screenings and activities. Nighttime on the Green this year will feature the future of Adult Swim; fans can watch the latest episodes and pilots, indulge in the camp-favorite S’mores Station featuring fun-size SNICKERS ® bars, and get access to special talent.

For fans who want even more Rick and Morty, SNICKERS ® is bringing the #Rickmobile to San Diego all week long! Track the mad scientist’s movements on social media as the custom mobile pop-up shop stocked with exclusive Rick and Morty items makes its way across the city.

2018 Comic-Con International: USA Network presents ‘The Purge’ panel and activation

USA Network is coming to San Diego Comic-Con this year with an immersive activation and panel for the eagerly awaited television series “The Purge.” Based on the worldwide phenomenon film franchise, the series will debut on USA on Tuesday, September 4 at 10/9c. “The First Purge” is now in theaters.

On Thursday, July 19, USA will open the doors of America’s first “Purge City” store, an immersive experience in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp District, to the public. Transporting fans into the world of “The Purge,” “Purge City” is a tongue-in-cheek, one-stop shop for the perfect Purge Night, where friendly “Purge City” staff help visitors browse the aisles for items from emergency candles to masks to energy drinks – to help citizens stay safe and awake for the 12 hours of annual lawlessness.

Shoppers can also enjoy Purge photo opportunities and browse an area dedicated to the political rise of the New Founding Fathers of America, from the first Purge experiment on Staten Island to subsequent annual Purge Nights. “Purge City” will be open for business at 215 Tony Gwynn Drive – from Thursday, July 19 through Saturday, July 21 from 11 AM until 7 PM and Sunday, July 22 from 11 AM until 4 PM.

On Saturday, July 21 from 5:15-6:15 PM (Room 6BCF at the San Diego Convention Center), producer Jason Blum and the creators of the blockbuster film franchise will come together for a special panel that gives an exclusive inside look into how they’re expanding “The Purge’s” universe into television. Cast members from both the hit new feature film “The First Purge” – currently in theaters – and the upcoming television series will also be on hand to offer their own perspectives on the world.

Food Network premieres ‘Reality Cupcakes’ starring Ashley Foxen

Rolling Stones renew Universal Music Group deal; more Eagle Rock home videos announced

The Rolling Stones and Universal Music Group (UMG) have renewed their partnership that covers the band’s recorded music, audio-visual catalogues, archival support, global merchandising and brand management, according to an announcement made by UMG. The Rolling Stones have been signed to UMG since 2008. The company has been consistent about releasing reissued or archival Stones content every year. For example, in June 2018, UMG released the Rolling Stones reissue box set “The Studio Albums Vinyl Collection 1971-2016.”

UMG-owned Bravado will continue to  handle the Rolling Stones’ global merchandising rights, retail licensing, brand management and e-commerce on behalf of the band. Bravado will also continue working closely with the band and management to “identify new and innovative opportunities for creative collaboration within the worlds of art, fashion, retail, sport, lifestyle and touring merchandise. Recent examples of those collaborations are the Rolling Stones’ merchandising deals with Paris Saint Germain FC,  Colette, Selfridges and Zara.

In addition, UMG will “provide the Rolling Stones with archival support and dedicated space for the band’s physical media assets, musical instruments and equipment across the company’s ecosystem of vaults positioned around the world,” according to the announcement.

UMG-owned Eagle Rock Entertainment will also re-issue several concert films from the Rolling Stones’ archives including: “Atlanta” (1989); “Steel Wheels” (1989-90); “Voodoo Lounge” (1994); “Bridges to Babylon” (1997-1998); “Four Flicks” (2002) and “Bigger Bang” (2005-2006).

On July 13, 2018, Eagle Rock releases the Rolling Stones home video “From the Vault: No Security—San Jose 1999.” The concert was filmed in April 1999 at the San Jose Arena (now known as the SAP Center) in California, as part of the the band’s “No Security” tour.  Over the course of the 20 songs performed in the home video, fans will get to see extended jams of songs such as “Out of Control,” “Midnight Rambler” and “It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll (But I Like It).”

During the Rolling Stones’ 1997-1998 “Bridges to Babylon” tour, they walked on a bridge in the middle of the crowd, midway through the concerts, to perform on a smaller stage in the round at the center of the venue. The “No Security” tour continued that concept, and it’s clear the band enjoyed giving high-fives and and reaching out to fans in the audience as they made their way to and from the more intimate stage to perform a trio of songs: “Route 66,” “Get Off of My Cloud,” and “Midnight Rambler,” one of the highlights of the Rolling Stones’ blues-loving musical roots.

By the 1990s, the Rolling Stones—lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts—had become a well-oiled corporate touring machine, but it’s clear that, then and now, they love performing and haven’t lost their high level of energy and ability to massively entertain an audience. Their are moments of spontaneity in this concert, such as when guitarist Richards impishly took over from Chuck Leavell to play keyboards during the last part of “Honky Tonk Women.” Jagger played guitar on “Some Girls” (which featured reworked lyrics that are less controversial than the original song lyrics), “Saint of Me” and “Respectable.”

The show also includes crowd-pleasing hits that have become staples at Stones concerts, such as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women, “Paint It Black,” “Start Me Up,” “Brown Sugar” and “Sympathy for the Devil.” Other songs included in the concert are “Bitch,” “You Got Me Rocking,” “I Got the Blues,” and Richards singing lead on “You Got the Silver” and “Before They Make Me Run.”

Nearly 20 years after this concert was filmed, the Rolling Stones are still one of the world’s biggest touring acts. (The band wrapped up the “No Filter” tour of Europe on July 8, 2018.) And although the Rolling Stones have not released a studio album of new songs since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang” (and it’s unknown when they will release an album of new songs), this renewed deal with UMG is a clear sign that there will be a steady stream of other Rolling Stones content and merchandise for years to come.

2018 Comic-Con International: AMC activities and exclusives

Nile Rodgers named chairman of Songwriters Hall of Fame

Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Nile Rodgers was unanimously elected Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame by the SHOF Board of Directors at the annual board meeting. Rodgers will serve as Chairman for a three-year term following Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, who were Co-Chairs for the past three years.

“Nile is respected and admired by his fans and his peers alike for his multi/cross-genre music and for being a musical pioneer,” said Linda Moran, SHOF President and CEO. “More importantly, Nile’s eloquence in talking about songwriting and its process makes him the ideal voice for the songwriting community as Chairman of the SHOF.”

CBS Television Studios presents the exclusive world premiere screenings of its new series CHARMED and MAGNUM P.I. at San Diego Comic-Con. As previously announced, cast and producers of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will beam into HALL H for a look back on season one and tease what’s ahead for season two.

The Studio will also present CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND in its first-ever Comic-Con appearance featuring a tell-all panel discussion with series co-creators to celebrate the final season. Also, CBS All Access will host a special marathon screening event of fan-favorite original episodes from the iconic cult classic THE TWILIGHT ZONE. CBS COMEDY CARS – From Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, CBS will offer complimentary rides throughout the Gaslamp District in branded electric cars. Featured shows will include the new fall comedies THE NEIGHBORHOOD and HAPPY TOGETHER. Trailers of the series will be screened for the passengers in those cars as well. Brand ambassadors will distribute giveaways making their debut at Comic-Con, including a variety of collectable emoji squeezies for THE NEIGHBORHOOD and HAPPY TOGETHER.

“MAGNUM P.I.” TAKEOVER – On Thursday, July 19, CBS will cruise the streets of Comic-Con in a branded Ferrari 488 to promote the return of MAGNUM P.I. Brand ambassadors will distribute red sunglasses and Hawaiian leis.

“STAR TREK: DISCOVERY” PEDICABS – From Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, CBS will offer free “intergalactic” rides throughout San Diego’s Gaslamp District in pedicabs inspired by the design of the U.S.S. Discovery’s captain’s chair. The pedicabs will feature the chair’s distinctive stitched black seats as well as video monitors built into its armrests, which in this case will screen trailers for the highly anticipated second season of the show. As an added touch, each vehicle will display an illuminated U.S.S. Discovery delta shield on the back.

“STAR TREK: DISCOVERY” MIRROR UNIVERSE GALLERY TAKEOVER – CBS is creating a fully immersive STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Mirror Universe experience at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery (363 Fifth Avenue, San Diego); Comic-Con badges are not required for entry. The exhibit, scheduled to run from Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, will feature a photo opportunity with Emperor Georgiou’s throne and will showcase props and costumes from the series’ Terran Empire. The gallery will also house an official “Star Trek” shop with Comic-Con exclusives.
