Mariah Carey set to headline ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018’

Dick Clark Productions and ABC today announced that multi-platinum music superstar Mariah Carey will return to Times Square to perform for a live audience of more than one million people, just minutes before the ball drops on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018.” Carey first appeared on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in 2005 when she became the very first artist to perform live from Times Square on the program. She returned in 2016 and will once again headline this year’s festivities. Carey joins previously announced Times Square performers including chart-topping singer/songwriter Camila Cabello, multi-platinum singer/songwriter and actor Nick Jonas and award-winning duo Sugarland. America’s largest celebration of the year will take place on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31 beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST on the ABC Television Network.

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018” marks the 46^th anniversary of America’s largest celebration of the year and will include 5 ½ hours of special performances and reports on New Year’s celebrations from around the globe. 2018 Golden Globe Awards: Oprah Winfrey named recipient of Cecil B. de Mille Award

Acclaimed actress, producer, television star and entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey will be honored with the 2018 Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 7, 2018, hosted by Seth Meyers. Johnny Iuzzini scandal: ABC cancels ‘The Great American Baking Show’ after he’s accused of sexual harassment

ABC has abruptly cancelled “The Great American Baking Show” after several female ex-subordinates of Johnny Iuzzini (one of the show’s judges) accused him of sexual harassment and sexual assault. “The Great American Baking Show” (originally titled “The Great Holiday Baking Show”) is the U.S. version of “The Great British Bake Off.” Iuzzini had been with the American show since its debut in 2015. The third season premiered on ABC on December 7, 2017, and featured new hosts Ayesha Curry and Anthony Adams, as well has new judge Paul Hollywood, who is one of the original judges of “The Great British Bake Off.”

The allegations against Iuzzini were first published by the news website Mic in incidents that the accusers say took place between 2009 and 2011, when Iuzzini was a pastry chef at Jean-Georges restaurant at the Trump International Hotel in New York. Iuzzini left Jean-Georges in 2011.

In an article published by Mic on November 29, 2017, four women (who did not reveal their identities for fear of retaliation) describe Iuzzini as boss of a mostly female staff who would frequently abuse his power in a sexually aggressive way. Iuzzini would allegedly demand shoulder massages from his female employees, grope female employees without their consent, simulate sex on their bodies or in their presence, and make sexual and other abusive comments. One of the women also said that Iuzzini would stick his tongue in her ear without her consent, and that it happened many times.

One of the women admitted to having a consensual, on-again/off-again sexual relationship with Iuzzini, but says that she felt pressured into the relationship, which began around the time that Iuzzini interviewed her to work at the restaurant. The other women did not have sexual relationships with Iuzzini, and say that he made the working environment so toxic that they eventually quit because of him. All of them said that they did not file formal complaints out of fear, but that they told many people at the time these alleged incidents occurred.

Iuzzini released this statement to Mic: “I am shattered and heartbroken at the thought that any of my actions left members of my team feeling hurt or degraded. More importantly, I am deeply sorry to those who felt hurt. I certainly deny the allegations, as presented to me, that I ever had a drug problem, threw an empty nitrogen canister at anyone or that I left Jean-Georges on anything other than good terms (I provided three months’ notice and maintain a good relationship with chef and mentor Jean-Georges to this day). Many of the other allegations are inaccurate, others I do not recall and none were meant to hurt people. Nonetheless, I must take responsibility if any of the members of my team felt uncomfortable by my words or actions, regardless of my intent or recollection. I must hear that what the women making the accusations are telling me and recognize I caused pain. I have strived to be a good mentor over the course of my career, and I now understand that I failed some people. To me, that is unacceptable.”

Iuzzini then went on to say in his statement that he learned this type of “unacceptable” behavior when he was a boy, and that for years, he thought that acting that way “was deemed permissible since four-star kitchens are high-stress jobs.”

On December 12, 2017, Mic published another article in which four more women came forward to say that they witnessed sexual harassment perpetrated by Iuzzini at Jean-Georges. One of the witnesses said that the restaurant’s management was aware of Iuzzini’s behavior as far back as 2004 but did nothing to stop the alleged harassment. The ex-employees of the alleged harassment said that they did not file formal complaints because they feared retaliation and felt that the restaurant’s management would protect Iuzzini. However, a lawsuit (which did not go to court) alleged that Iuzzini hired a female stripper to perform at an after-hours party at the restaurant, and that several attendees of the party were deeply offended because they did not know a stripper would be performing.

ABC released this statement: “In light of allegations that recently came to our attention, ABC has ended its relationship with Johnny Iuzzini and will not be airing the remainder of The Great American Baking Show episodes. ABC takes matters such as those described in the allegations very seriously and has come to the conclusion that they violate our standards of conduct.”

This is the second major sexual-harassment scandal to hit a celebrity chef with a show on ABC. On December 11, 2017, Mario Batali was ousted as co-host of “The Chew” after he admitted to and made a public apology for sexual harassment of female employees and other female colleagues. The allegations, made by unidentified women in an Eater article, accused Batali of sexually harassing females through unwanted groping of their private parts, as well as making crude sexual comments. The report also alleged that 57-year-old Batali had been acting this way for at least 25 years. In addition to losing his hosting gig at “The Chew,” Batali has agreed to step down from his multiple businesses.

December 21, 2017 UPDATE: ABC announced on its website that Vallery Lomas had won the third season of “The Great American Baking Show.” The announcement was made on the day that the season finale would have aired.

The 33rd Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Klipsch Audio, will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rock Hall will host a week of events leading up to the celebration including the unveiling of the 2018 Inductee exhibit and Hall of Fame floor.

Ticket on-sale dates will be announced later. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Induction Ceremony will again have its television premiere on HBO, and a radio broadcast on SiriusXM. Broadcast details will also be announced later.

Four of the Inductees were on the ballot for the first time, including: Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Additionally, the top five artists, as selected by the public, comprised a “fans’ ballot” that was tallied along with the other ballots to determine the 2018 Inductees. 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards: ‘Three Billboards,’ ‘Big Little Lies,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘GLOW’ are the top nominees

With four nominations each, the movie drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and the TV shows “Big Little Lies,” “Stranger Things” and “GLOW” are the top contenders at the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. The ceremony will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 21, 2018. TBS and TNT will have the live U.S. telecast of the show (at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT), which will be hosted by Kristen Bell. It’s the first time that the SAG Awards will have a host.

TNT and TBS subscribers can also watch the 2018 SAG Awards live through the networks’ websites and mobile apps. In addition, TNT will present a special encore of the ceremony at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT that same evening. Prior to the televised ceremony, the honorees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles will be announced during the SAG Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show webcast. As previously announced, Morgan Freeman will receive the Life Achievement Award at the show.

Nominees for the 24th Annual SAG Awards were announced by actresses Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood, California, on December 13, 2017. Two nominating panels—one for television and one for film—each composed of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA union members from across the United States chose this year’s nominees.

The SAG Awards and Golden Globe Awards are considered the best predictors of who and what will get nominated for Oscars and Emmys. Both award shows tend to have many of the same nominees, especially in the movie categories. However, the SAG Awards (which are voted for by SAG-AFTRA members) and Golden Globe Awards (which are voted for the by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) can still have enough differences in their respective nominations to set them apart from each other.

Movie Snubs and Surprises

The biggest snub at the SAG Awards this year was the complete shutout of “The Post,” an A-list drama about the Washington Post and the Pentagon Papers. “The Post”—directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks—failed to get any SAG Award nominations, but was nominated for six Golden Globes, and has gotten several nominations at other award shows that honor movies. In the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, the slot that many people assumed would go to Meryl Streep instead went to Judi Dench, for her performance in “Victoria & Abdul.”

The kidnapping drama “All the Money in the World” and the musical “The Greatest Showman” each received three Golden Globe nominations but didn’t get any SAG nominations, presumably because the movies did not screen in time for enough SAG voters to see them. According to various reports, the HFPA was the first award-show organization to see screenings of “All the Money in the World” and “The Greatest Showman,” which would explain why these movies each received three Golden Globe nominations. Meanwhile, the comedy “The Big Sick,” which was completely snubbed by the Golden Globe Awards, received two SAG Award nominations: Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, while Holly Hunter picked up a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Woody Harrelson has been largely ignored for award-show nominations this year, but he received a surprising SAG Awards nod for his supporting role in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” His “Three Billboards” co-star Sam Rockwell is considered an early frontrunner to get supporting-actor awards for his role in the movie, but it’s interesting that the SAG Awards gave recognition to Harrelson’s more low-key role in “Three Billboards.”

Steve Carell of “Battle of the Sexes” and Hong Chau of “Downsizing” repeated their surprising Golden Globe nominations at the SAG Awards. They could be wild cards in the race for Oscar nominations, because both movies have otherwise lost a lot of award-show buzz since premiering at film festivals in September 2017.

TV Snubs and Surprises

The SAG Awards and Golden Globe Awards are much more different from each other in the TV categories. “Fargo” received several nominations for Golden Globes and Emmys, but didn’t get any SAG Award nominations this year. “Saturday Night Live” was also snubbed at the SAG Awards this year. Whereas the Golden Globes shut out “Veep,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Grace and Frankie” from getting any nominations this year, the SAG Awards showed some love by giving each show two nominations.

The “Will & Grace” revival has received SAG and Golden Globe nominations this year, but the SAG Awards gave Sean Hayes a nomination for acting on the show (the only SAG nomination for “Will & Grace” this year), while the Golden Globes gave Eric McCormack the show’s only acting nomination. The SAG Awards didn’t nominate “Will & Grace” for best ensemble in a comedy series, although “Will & Grace” is nominated for best comedy series at the Golden Globes.

Meanwhile, the wrestling comedy “GLOW” continues to get major awards recognition, having received multiple nods at the SAG Awards and Golden Globes. (Because “GLOW” premiered in June 2017, the show won’t be eligible for the Emmy Awards until 2018.) “GLOW” is the only new comedy series that premiered in 2017 that has gotten this much award-show recognition, which is a good sign that “GLOW” will also get several Emmy nominations.

“Orange Is the New Black” and “House of Cards” were completely shut out of the Golden Globes this year, but the SAG Awards did have some love left for them, by nominating female actors Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”). In addition, the SAG Awards have once again nominated “Orange Is the New Black” for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Sexual Harassment Fallout

As expected, previous SAG Award winners Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) and Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) were not nominated for any SAG Awards this year, no doubt due to their sexual-harassment scandals. Before the scandals, Spacey and Tambor were nominated for their shows practically every year they were eligible. Spacey was fired from “House of Cards” in October 2017, while Tambor quit “Transparent” in November 2017.

Other actors who have been hit with allegations of sexual misconduct in recent months—such as Jeremy Piven, Danny Masterson, Ed Westwick and Dustin Hoffman—were not expected to be nominated for any major awards this year, although Hoffman did campaign for his role in the Netflix movie “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).”

Geoffrey Rush is the only actor recently accused of sexual misconduct who has not gotten any awards-show backlash because of the allegations. Rush has been nominated for a SAG Award and Golden Globe Award for his role as Albert Einstein in the Nat Geo limited series “Genius.” Rush has denied the accusations against him, and he is suing the Sydney-based newspaper The Daily Telegraph for publishing a November 2017 story alleging that he sexually harassed women.

2018 Golden Globe Awards: ‘The Shape of Water’ leads movie nominations, ‘Big Little Lies’ has the most TV nods

With seven nominations, “The Shape of Water” is the leading contender overall and in the movie categories for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which is set to take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 7, 2018. NBC will have the U.S. telecast of the show, which will be hosted by Seth Meyers. The HBO limited series “Big Little Lies” received the most Golden Globe nominations (six) in the TV categories.

The Golden Globe Awards are presented and voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Dick Clark Productions (DCP) produces the telecast.

The nominations for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton on December 11, 2017 by actors Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell and Sharon Stone, with HFPA president, Meher Tatna and DCP executive vice president of television Barry Adelman. Eligible movies are those with theatrical releases of at least one week in the U.S. in 2017. Eligible TV shows are those that premiered new episodes in the U.S. in 2017.

NBC will televise “Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special” at 9 p.m. ET/PT on December 13, 2017. “Will & Grace” stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing are hosts of the show.

Predicted Contenders

“The Shape of Water” is also the top nominee at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards, and the American Film Institute has named “The Shape of Water” among the 10 best films of 2017. Almost all of the films nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes have also received similar nominations at other award shows so far. They include “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “The Post,” “Lady Bird” and “I, Tonya.”

In the TV categories, several shows that made the Golden Globes nominations list in addition to the Emmy-winning “Big Little Lies” have also been nominated or won at the 2017 Emmys, including “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “This Is Us,” “Stranger Things,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “Fargo,” “The Wizard of Lies” and “The Crown.” (“Game of Thrones” was not eligible for the Emmys this year.)

Movie Snubs and Surprises

Noticeable movie snubs include “The Big Sick,” which has been getting a lot of nominations at other award shows that honor movies. However, “The Big Sick” failed to get any Golden Globe nominations. Jordan Peele has been racking up nominations at several other award shows for writing and directing the critically acclaimed hit “Get Out,” but he was left out of the Golden Globes race for writing and directing. However, as one of the producers of “Get Out,” Peele did get a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture. Curiously, even though “Get Out” is a thriller/horror movie, the Golden Globe Awards put it in the category of comedy or musical, where “Get Out” did manage to get two Golden Globe nominations: for Best Motion Picture and for Best Actor.

Superhero and sci-fi movies have a tough time getting nominations outside of technical/production categories (such as visual effects, production design, editing and cinematography), so it’s not too surprising that “Wonder Woman,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Logan” were shut out of the Golden Globes, even though these movies were critically acclaimed hits. It’s unknown if enough Golden Globe voters saw “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in time to vote for it, and “Blade Runner 2049” got too many mixed and disappointed reactions from critics and audiences to be a serious Golden Globes contender.

Two films that have been embraced by the Golden Globes but snubbed at other movie-related ceremonies so far are the musical “The Greatest Showman” and the kidnapping drama “All the Money in the World,” which received three nominations each. “All the Money in the World” was abruptly re-shot and re-edited in November 2017, one month before its release, to remove co-star Kevin Spacey after his sexual misconduct scandal made him a Hollywood pariah. Spacey was replaced in the film by Christopher Plummer, who received a Golden Globe nod for the film, as did the movie’s lead actress Michelle Williams and director Ridley Scott.

Meanwhile, the Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs feature film “Battle of the Sexes” has been virtually ignored by most award shows so far, but managed to get two Golden Globe nods for stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell. Although “Battle of the Sexes” is really a drama, the Golden Globes have it in the category of musical or comedy. This misplacement of dramatic, non-musical movies in the musical or comedy category is something that seems to happen every year with the Golden Globes, and it’s one of the biggest criticisms that the show gets.

In the TV categories, the Golden Globe voters show that they have very different tastes from Emmy voters when it comes to comedies. “Veep,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Modern Family,” which consistently get Emmy nominations and/or wins, failed to receive any Golden Globe nominations this time around. (“Atlanta,” which has won Golden Globes and Emmys, was not eligible for any Golden Globes this year because the show did not air any new episodes in 2017.)

Former Golden Globe favorites “Orange Is the New Black,” “House of Cards” and “Transparent” were completely snubbed. “House of Cards,” which starred Spacey until he was fired from the show in October 2017, was no doubt tainted by his sex scandal. “Transparent” also seems to have met a similar fate: the show’s star Jeffrey Tambor quit “Transparent” in November 2017, after he was accused of sexually harassing two of his “Transparent” co-workers. Tambor has denied the allegations. Spacey has apologized for one allegation against him made by actor Anthony Rapp, but Spacey has not publicly commented on numerous other allegations against him. “House of Cards,” which already announced that its sixth season premiering in 2018 will be the show’s last season, has since announced that Spacey will not be replaced, and Robin Wright will take the lead role in the cast. “Transparent” will also continue without Tambor, but the show has not yet announced any details about future storylines or other changes to the cast.

The Golden Globes embrace TV newcomers, and many of the TV nominees in the comedy categories are newbies such as “SMILF” (two nominations), “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (two nominations), as well as “The Good Doctor,” “GLOW,” “The Deuce” and “I Love Dick,” which received one nomination each. However, there’s a big difference between new, original shows and “new-ish” shows that are reboots or remakes. Of the many TV series that were rebooted or remade this year, only two received Golden Globe nominations: “Will & Grace” (two nods) and “Twin Peaks” (one nod), which is a clear indication that Golden Globe voters are not enamored with most new versions of old TV shows. In addition, TV shows that are based on movies got completely snubbed.

Sexual Harassment Fallout

As previously mentioned, sexual misconduct scandals seem to have had an effect on Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Amazon’s “Transparent” being snubbed by the Golden Globes this year. Several other actors who have in recent months been hit with sexual misconduct allegations include Jeremy Piven, Ed Westwick, Danny Masterson and Dustin Hoffman. None of them was expected to get any Golden Globe nominations this year, although Hoffman campaigned for his role in the Netflix movie “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).”

Louis C.K.’s sexual misconduct scandal in November 2017 and his admission that all the allegations against him are true have virtually ensured that he won’t be nominated for any major awards for the foreseable future. His FX comedy series “Louie,” which has been on hiatus since 2015, was cancelled after the scandal hit, and the show would have been ineligible for any awards this year anyway. Louis C.K. was an executive producer of FX’s “Better Things” until the network fired him from the show, but “Better Things” star/executive producer Pamela Adlon received a Golden Globe nod despite the scandal.

The Weinstein Company, which ousted co-founder Harvey Weinstein in October 2017, was not surprisingly shut out of the Golden Globes race this year, although the company didn’t have any really serious awards contenders for the first time in years. The closest to being an awards contender was the crime thriller “Wind River,” but award-show buzz for the movie had already faded before the Weinstein scandal hit.

However a sexual misconduct scandal seems to have had no negative effect on the award-show chances for Pixar Animation Studios, which placed chief creative officer John Lasseter on leave for sexual misconduct in November 2017. Pixar still got Golden Globe nominations for “Coco,” which is already being touted as the Oscar frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature.

“Genius” star Geoffrey Rush, nominated for a Golden Globe in the limited series, has been accused of sexual harassment, but he has vehemently denied the allegations, which were published in November 2017 by Sydney-based newspaper the Daily Telegraph. Rush is now suing the Daily Telegraph for libel.

Amazon Studios, which ousted chief Roy Price in November, had mixed results at the Golden Globes this year, by receiving three nominations, but only in the TV categories: two nods for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and one nomination for “I Love Dick.” Amazon’s movies released in 2017 were completely snubbed by the Golden Globes, most notably “The Big Sick,” which is Amazon’s 2017 movie that is most likely to be nominated at any major award show that honors movies.

Mario Batali scandal: Celebrity chef steps down from his business and ‘The Chew’ after admitting to sexual harassment

Mario Batali has become yet another famous and powerful person accused of sexual harassment, resulting in serious damage to his career. Unlike most of the accused, celebrity chef/restaurateur Batali has admitted to the allegations made against him by colleagues and co-workers, some of whom detailed their stories to Eater, a website that covers the restaurant industry. In the wake of these revelations that Eater published on December 11, 2017, Batali has stepped down from his businesses and has left his co-hosting position at ABC’s food-oriented talk show “The Chew.”

According to the stories published by Eater, Batali (who is 57) has a history of harassing women for at least 25 years. The harassment includes unwanted groping of breasts, buttocks and other parts of the body, as well as crude sexual comments in the workplace. Batali is married with two adult children.

Along with Joe Bastianich and Lidia Bastianich, Batali is a partner in Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, which owns the New York City restaurants Del Posto and Babbo, which each has one Michelin star. Batali is also a minority shareholder in Eataly USA, a chain of food halls specializing in Italian cuisine.

Batali had been co-hosting “The Chew” since the show’s premiere in 2011. He also starred in the Food Network show “Molto Mario,” which aired from 1996 to 2004. Batali was previously a sous chef at the Four Seasons Biltmore and a sous chef for the Four Seasons Clift Hotel San Francisco. His education includes studying at Fordham University and Le Cordon Bleu.

Batali released this statement to Eater: “I apologize to the people I have mistreated and hurt. Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted. That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort I have caused to my peers, employees, customers, friends and family.

“I have work to do to try to regain the trust of those I have hurt and disappointed. For this reason, I am going to step away from day-to-day operations of my businesses. We built these restaurants so that our guests could have fun and indulge, but I took that too far in my own behavior. I won’t make that mistake again. I want any place I am associated with to feel comfortable and safe for the people who work or dine there.

“I know my actions have disappointed many people. The successes I have enjoyed are owned by everyone on my team. The failures are mine alone. To the people who have been at my side during this time — my family, my partners, my employees, my friends, my fans — I am grateful for your support and hopeful that I can regain your respect and trust. I will spend the next period of time trying to do that.”

Several journalists working on sexual-harassment stories involving the rich and famous have reported that the restaurant industry is one of the worst when it comes to sexual misconduct and degradation, with women usually being the target of the abuse. Batali surely will not be the last celebrity in the industry who will be exposed as a sexual harasser and have a fall from grace because of it.

Marking the 18th chapter in the American Film Institute’s ongoing almanac of the moving image, the 2017 entries join a notable pantheon of previous AFI honorees — works of significance that contribute to the rich cultural legacy and define the state of the art form. View the complete almanac here.

AFI AWARDS selections are made through a jury process where AFI Trustees, scholars, artists and critics determine the year’s most outstanding achievements and provide contextual rationales for each selection.

This year’s juries — one for film and one for television — were chaired by AFI Board of Trustees Vice Chairs Tom Pollock (former Vice Chairman of MCA, Chairman of Universal Pictures) for film and Richard Frank (former Chairman of Walt Disney Television, President of Walt Disney Studios, President of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) for television. The juries featured acclaimed artists such as Judd Apatow*, Paris Barclay, Halle Berry, Jay Cassidy (AFI Class of 1976), Jamie Lee Curtis and Jennifer Getzinger (AFI Directing Workshop for Women, Class of 2005); renowned authors and scholars representing prestigious universities with recognized motion picture arts and television programs; film historian Leonard Maltin; the AFI Board of Trustees; and film and television critics from media outlets such as NPR, Rolling Stone, TV Guide, Variety and The Washington Post.

*Apatow recused himself from voting on THE BIG SICK, of which he is a producer.

In a noncompetitive atmosphere, honorees will gather on January 5, 2018, for recognition at the annual AFI AWARDS private luncheon in Los Angeles, CA — an event favored by the entertainment community for its informal intimacy and its inclusive acknowledgement of excellence. At the luncheon, AFI will present jury rationales providing artistic and cultural context for the selection of each honoree.

The AFI AWARDS luncheon will be sponsored by Audi, a supporter of AFI and its programs for the past 14 years. Earlier in 2017, as part of its pioneering commitment to AFI and to drive progress, Audi created the Audi Fellowship for Women to support one female director for her entire two-year AFI Conservatory enrollment.

Marvel announces ‘Marvel Rising’ animation franchise and voice actors

Marvel Entertainment has announced “Marvel Rising,” a brand-new, multi-platform animation franchise starring the next generation of Marvel heroes set to launch in 2018. The program will launch with six, four-minute digital shorts that spotlight Spider-Gwen with her new secret moniker, Ghost-Spider, and introduce audiences to the world of “Marvel Rising.” Following the shorts, a feature-length animated film, “Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors” will premiere later that year. Meet the characters behind “Marvel Rising”:

Gwen Stacy aka Ghost-Spider (formerly Spider Gwen) voiced by Dove Cameron (“Descendants,” “Hairspray Live”) – a free spirited teen who found her calling to be a super hero after being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining spider-like powers. As Ghost-Spider, she aids those in need, but has to keep her alter-ego a secret from her father, Captain George Stacy, who sees Ghost-Spider as more of a menace than a hero.

Daisy Johnson aka Quake voiced by Chloe Bennet (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Nashville”) – a leading agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. whose tendency for rule-breaking gets her into trouble now and then. Daisy befriends the young group of heroes and through them discovers how to become a better leader. She can generate powerful vibrational waves, which produce effects similar to earthquakes.

Dante Pertuz aka Inferno voiced by Tyler Posey (“Teen .Wolf,” “Lincoln Heights”) – a brooding, dark loner on the run. Dante has the power of pyrokinesis, which makes him capable of generating flames – however, he is not fully in control of his fiery abilities. It’s a thin line between good guy and villain for the unpredictable Inferno.

Victor Kohl aka Exile voiced by BooBoo Stewart (“Descendants,” “The Twilight Saga”) – a charming, handsome, and troublesome young Inhuman whose quest for superiority places him into the wrong crowd. He can use Darkforce energy to create weapons and portals that allow him to teleport.

Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel voiced by Kathreen Khavari (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” “Big Little Lies”) – a devoted fan of Super Heroes, especially of her mentor Captain Marvel; she is determined that she too can be a great hero! If only she’d be taken seriously. Kamala is equipped with metamorphic powers that allow her to stretch, enlarge, or shrink her overall size, parts of her body, or alter her physical appearance. She is especially fond of “embiggening” her fists.

Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl voiced by Milana Vayntrub (“Marvel’s New Warriors,” “This Is Us”) – the uber-positive, hilarious best friend and teammate of Ms. Marvel. With advanced computer skills, enhanced strength, agility, durability, and senses of a squirrel, Doreen (along with her squirrel partner, Tippy Toe!), is primed and ready to become a successful hero.

America Chavez voiced by Cierra Ramirez (“The Fosters,” “The Secret Life of an America Teenager”) – a strong, independent young hero whose painful past drives her to reject leadership and remain a loner. America’s powers include superhuman strength, speed, and durability, plus the ability to fly.

Rayshaun Lucas aka Patriot voiced by Kamil McFadden (“K.C. Undercover,” “Grown Ups 2”) – a natural born leader who is quick to leap into action to impress his colleagues at S.H.I.E.L.D. Rayshaun strives to live up to Captain America’s legacy with integrity, honesty, and order above all. His skills include heightened strength, speed, stamina, and durability.

Gloria “Glory” Grant voiced by Skai JacksFron (“Bunk’d,” “Jessie”) – Gloria, or ‘Glory,’ is Gwen Stacy’s friend and member of their garage band “The Emm-Jays.” Gloria is a smart, hard-working girl that genuinely cares for Gwen, but has felt a distance growing between them ever since their friend, Kevin, was murdered. When being casual, Gloria’s known to be funny, sarcastic and sassy.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel voiced by Kim Raver (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “24”) – a bold leader who doesn’t sugar-coat and is guided by a strong sense of duty and honor. She’s the ultimate inspiration for our band of misfit heroes. She is equipped with superhuman strength, can fly at high speeds, and can project intense energy blasts.

Hala voiced by Ming-Na Wen (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Mulan”) – Hala is a Kree Accuser bent on galactic domination. She’ll go to any length or treacherous means to achieve what she, and the entire Kree race, wants: Power. Hala is cold, cryptic and nefarious, often challenging those who try to oppose her.

Captain George Stacy voiced by Steven Weber (“13 Reasons Why,” “NCIS: New Orleans”) – Chief of the NYPD and Gwen Stacy’s loving, but fiercely protective father. Captain Stacy is a very disciplined, hard-working man that will stop at nothing to obtain justice – who unfortunately sees Ghost-Spider as a menace and a threat to society.

Lockjaw and Tippy Toe are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (“Star Wars Rebels,” “Gravity Falls”). Two lovable and heroic sidekicks: Lockjaw is Kamala’s trusty, teleporting mutt and Tippy Toe is Doreen’s partner in crime and best squirrel friend.
