Review: ‘Twinless,’ starring Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney

Culture Representation: Taking place in Portland, Oregon, and in Moscow, Idaho, the comedy/drama film “Twinless” features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few Asians and African Americans) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: Two men become close friends after meeting in a therapy group for people grieving over the deaths of their twins, and one of the men has very disturbing secrets.

Culture Audience: “Twinless” will appeal mainly to people who are fans of the movie’s headliners and dark comedies that are quirky and artistically made.

“Twinless” is a compelling mix of a twist-filled psychological thriller and a wickedly dark comedy. Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney give knockout performances as two friends who have a co-dependent relationship after meeting in group therapy. Some of the plot reveals are more surprising than others, but “Twinless” will still make viewers think about how grief and low-self-esteem can cause people to do extreme things.

Written and directed by Sweeney, “Twinless” had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and them screened at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. “Twinless” takes place mostly in Portland, Oregon (where the movie was filmed on location), and briefly in Moscow, Idaho. The story’s timeline is about one year and is told in non-chronological order.

In “Twinless,” Roman (played by O’Brien) and Dennis (played by Sweeney) meet in a Portland therapy group for people who are grieving the deaths of their respective twins. Roman has recently lost his identical twin Rocky (seen in flashbacks and also played by O’Brien), who died when Rocky was mowed down on the street by a hit-and-run driver. Roman’s permanent residence is his hometown of Moscow, Idaho, but he decided to stay a while in Portland (where Rocky lived) to settle some of the legal matters related to Rocky’s death.

Dennis says that he lost his identical twin Dean in a car accident. Dennis tells Roman that Dennis feels tremendous guilt about Dean’s death because Dean had been rushing in his car to pick up Dennis at an airport. Dennis feels that if he hadn’t scolded Dean over the phone for being late, then Dean might not have been speeding, and Dean might still be alive. Dennis says that he and Dean were so close, they were roommates in college.

Roman and Rocky were identical twins but had very different bachelor lifestyles, which led to Rocky and Roman being estranged at the time of Rocky’s death. Rocky was openly gay, had a comfortable job at a tech design firm, and was an intelligent college graduate who spent some time studying in Japan. By contrast, heterosexual Roman is a less-than-smart high school dropout, is frequently unemployed, and directionless in his life. Roman is the type of person who is unaware that his hometown of Moscow in Idaho isn’t the only city in the world with the name Moscow.

Before temporarily relocating to Portland, Roman lived with his prickly mother Lisa (played by Lauren Graham), who is in such deep grief over Rocky’s death, she’s in the type of depression where she finds it difficult to get out of bed. Roman, who always felt inferior to Rocky, perceives Lisa’s depression as an indication that she loved Rocky more than Roman. Other supporting cast members who have standout roles include Dennis’ perky and friendly co-worker Marcie (played by Aisling Franciosi), who works as a receptionist; a gay man named George (played by Chris Perfetti), who had been dating Rocky not long before Rocky died; and Charlotte (played by Tasha Smith), the wisecracking leader of the twin grief support group.

Dennis (who is openly gay and very sarcastic) and Roman (who is heterosexually macho and plain-speaking) quickly become close friends who bond over the losses of their respective twin brothers. About halfway through “Twinless,” it’s revealed that one of these pals has very dark and disturbing secrets that he wants to keep hidden by any means necessary. The well-paced and tension-filled “Twinless” (which has excellent cinematography from Greg Cotten, including artistic use of split-screen imagery) is a fascinating portrait of warped personal reinvention and how it can’t solve someone’s problems if that person still feels empty inside.

Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate released “Twinless” in U.S. cinemas on September 5, 2025. The movie will be released on digital and VOD on October 3, 2025.

Review: ‘Speak No Evil’ (2024), starring James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough and Scoot McNairy

Culture Representation: Taking place in England (and briefly in Italy), the horror film “Speak No Evil” (a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name) features an almost all-white group of people (with one person of Middle Eastern heritage) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: While on vacation in Italy, an American family meets a British family, and later experience terror as guests in the British family’s home.

Culture Audience: “Speak No Evil” will appeal mainly to people who are fans of 2022’s “Speak No Evil” and “slow burn” psychological thrillers with action-packed endings.

The 2024 version of “Speak No Evil” (based on the 2022 Danish horror film of the same name) is a rare Hollywood remake that’s better than the original film. A major plot hole still remains, but this remake has more suspense and a more satisfying ending. The characters in this remake are also better-developed, with many more questions answered that the original “Speak No Evil” film left unanswered.

Written and directed by James Watkins, “Speak No Evil” starts off looking like it will be almost a carbon copy of the Danish version of the movie. The opening scene, just like the Danish version of “Speak No Evil,” shows a family of three driving to their remote rural farmhouse, but the home is in England, not in Holland. The family consists of Patrick “Paddy” Feld (played by James McAvoy), Ciara Feld (played by Aisling Franciosi) and an 11-year-old son named Ant (played by Dan Hough), who is mute and very introverted. Paddy and Ciara tell people that Ant is mute because Ant has congenital ankyloglossia, which is the medical term for being born with a very short or stunted tongue.

While on vacation at the same resort in Italy, this family of three eventually meet and invite another family of three to their home, where the terror ensues. The invited family in the 2024 version of “Speak No Evil” is an American clan living in London. In the 2022 version of “Speak No Evil,” the family doing the inviting is Dutch, while the invited family is Danish. The 2024 version of “Speak No Evil” does a great job of adding extra layers of insecurities to the American couple—they’re having marital problems, they’re experiencing financial uncertainty, and they don’t have a close support group of friends and family in London—all of which make it more believable that the American couple would be more vulnerable to being lured into a trap set by killers disguised as a friendly couple.

The family of three Americans are Ben Dalton (played by Scoot McNairy); his wife Louise Dalton (played by Mackenzie Davis); and their 11-year-old daughter Agnes Dalton (played by Alix West Lefler), who is unusually attached to her stuffed bunny rabbit toy named Hoppy, which she wants to take everywhere she goes. Agnes in the 2022 version of “Speak No Evil” also had the same fixation on her stuffed bunny toy (which was named Ninus), but the parents didn’t try to ease her out of this attachment, which borders on a little unhealthy on a psychological/emotional maturity level. In the 2024 version, Agnes’ psychological arrested development is addressed head-on because Ben tells Agnes that by Agnes’ 12th birthday, Hoppy will have to be in another room when Agnes sleeps.

In both “See No Evil” movies, the couples meet at the vacation resort’s swimming pool when the victim spouses are sunning themselves next to an unoccupied lounge chair and the deceptive “alpha male” of the evil couple (in this case, Paddy) asks if he can use the chair. Ben and Louise politely says yes. A vacation acquaintance then ensues between the two families, who spend the rest of their time in Italy hanging out with each other.

During a couple’s meal together at the resort, Paddy says he’s a retired medical doctor. Ciara is a homemaker. She says that they live in a rural farmhouse in England, and Paddy is much happier since he gave up his medical practice. Paddy and Ciara tell Ben and Louise that they’re welcome to visit and stay anytime at Paddy and Ciara’s place.

Ben opens up about his current career problems. Ben, Louise and Agnes had moved to London because the Chicago-based company he worked for wanted Ben to open a London office there. However, the company cancelled those plans. Ben was laid off with a severance package, but he’s having a difficult time finding another job in London.

Louise worked in public relations when she lived in the United States, but she’s also been unable to find a job in London. Ben and Louise like London, which is why they’ve decided to continue living there. In the 2022 version of “Speak No Evil,” the only mention of jobs and careers is evil husband saying that he’s a retired medical doctor.

During the two families’ time in Italy, Agnes loses Hoppy somewhere outside the resort. Ben looks for the toy, but Paddy is the one who finds Hoppy. It’s a change from the 2022 version of “Speak No Evil,” where the father of Agnes was the one who found the rabbit toy.

By having Paddy find the toy, it brings a more believable scenario in which Paddy is able to establish trust with the Dalton family. Paddy becomes a “hero” to Agnes, who readily agrees to Paddy’s offer to give her a quick ride on his motor scooter. Later on in the movie, when Hoppy goes missing multiple times, Agnes’ attachment to Hoppy (and Paddy manipulating that attachment) will confirm the obvious: Paddy is probably responsible for taking Hoppy every time this bunny toy goes missing.

The Dalton family returns to London a few months after their trip to Italy. Ben and Louise get a postcard from Paddy and Ciara. The front of the postcard is a photo of the Feld and Dalton families together during their vacation in Italy. The postcard is an invitation for Ben, Louise and Agnes to visit and stay at the farmhouse where Paddy, Ciara and Ant live. Louise is a little hesitant but Ben convinces her it’ll be a good idea to get away again for a while and explore these new friendships.

The trip to the Feld family home starts out in an amiable manner. But then, Paddy and Ciara begin to test the boundaries of Ben and Louise. Just like in both “Speak No Evil” movies, Louise is pressured into eating red meat, even though she says she’s a vegetarian. Louise is actually a pescatarian because she says she eats fish. Paddy insults her for being hypocritical for calling herself a vegetarian when she actually eats fish.

There are other boundaries crossed and inappropriateness, usually initiated by Paddy, that have to do with child rearing and public displays of affection between adults. Both movies have a scene where the predator couple invites the victim couple to a family dinner outing at a restaurant but announce on short notice that the kids aren’t going on this outing. Instead, the kids will be looked after by a disheveled man named Muhjid (played by Motaz Malhees), who is described by Paddy and Ciara as a trusted babysitter in the neighborhood.

Louise (who is more likely than Ben to notice things that are off-kilter) is very wary about letting this stranger babysit Agnes. However, Ben acts as if she’s being uptight, so Louise reluctantly agrees to let Agnes and Ant be alone with Muhjid. At the restaurant, Paddy and Ciara ramp up the discomfort level by engaging in a sex act at the table during the meal. In the 2022 version of “Speak No Evil” the predator couple didn’t go that far and were just overly touchy-feely while dancing in front of the victim couple at the restaurant. In both movies, by the end of dinner, the predator husband expects the victim husband to pay the bill.

Both movies also have a scene where the husbands do some outdoor primal screaming as a way to bond with each other when they’re alone together. Both movies have the predator mother being overbearing in telling Agnes what to do, while the victim mother verbally gets annoyed by this overstepping of parental bounds. Both movies have a scene where the kids do a dance for their parents, and the predator father gets physically abusive with the son, much to the horror of the victim parents. But the biggest thing that both “Speak No Evil” movies have in common is in showing how not speaking up or not doing anything about things that are clearly wrong can have deadly consequences.

In other ways, there are gender dynamics that affect what happen, since Louise is constantly made to feel like she’s being “paranoid” or “unreasonable” if she speaks up about something that is inappropriate, which is why women are more likely than men to be insulted as “crazy” or “hysterical.” Meanwhile, Louise thinks Ben is too trusting and too passive, but he thinks he’s being open-minded and laid-back cool. Louise tells Ben more than once that she wants to leave, but he usually talks her out of it. Paddy and Ciara also put Ben and Louise on a guilt trip over wanting to leave. Ciara and Paddy convince Louise and Ben to stay by making a “confession” that probably isn’t true.

Because the trailers for the 2024 version of “Speak No Evil” already reveal that Paddy is the chief menace of the Feld family, the only real suspense is in finding out who will live and who will die at the end of the movie. McAvoy’s performance at times veers into campiness, but it remains effectively creepy throughout the film. Davis gives a very compelling performance as the heroic counterpoint to Paddy. In the relationship between Ben and Louise, this wife is more outspoken and proactive than the husband, just like Paddy is more outspoken and more proactive than Ciara.

The Feld family secrets are revealed in a way that is much more realistic than how the Danish version of the movie reveals the secrets of the villainous couple. The biggest plot hole (which is the same in both “Speak No Evil” movies) has to do with how long this evil couple was able to keep these secrets without other people getting suspicious and investigating. A few of the action scenes at the end of the 2024 version of “Speak No Evil” are somewhat formulaic. However, the ending of the 2024 version is a vast improvement from the 2022 version and should please viewers who have the patience to watch the buildup to this tension-filled finale.

Universal Pictures released “Speak No Evil” in U.S. cinemas on September 13, 2024. The movie will be released on digital and VOD on October 1, 2024.

Review: ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter,’ starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham and David Dastmalchian

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”

Culture Representation: Taking place in 1897, mostly on a ship sailing from the Carpathian mountain range in continental Europe to London, the horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” novel) features a predominantly white cast of characters (with one black person and one Asian person) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: The people on a ship that’s carrying livestock for a sales transaction find out too late that a vampire named Dracula is on the ship. 

Culture Audience: “The Last Voyage of Demeter” will appeal primarily to people who are fans of stories about Dracula or other vampires, but this violent flick drags on with underdeveloped characters and lot of boring repetition.

Considering the large number of vampire movies that exist, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is as creatively comatose as a vampire victim drained of blood. It takes entirely too long to get to any real action in this story, which is a dull mess of clichés. The movie has a talented cast, but they can’t save this disappointing movie that’s the equivalent of a sinking ship.

Directed by André Øvredal and written by Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is based on the chapter “Captain’s Log” in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” Making an entire movie based on only a book chapter can either limit the movie when mishandled or open up a lot of innovative possibilities from filmmakers with enough imagination. Unfortunately, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is hampered by a limp plot that’s essentially just a checklist of people on a ship getting attacked by the evil vampire Dracula on the ship. This vampire (played by Javier Botet) looks more like the alien-like Nosferatu as it was orginally conceived, rather than the elegant Count Dracula.

The movie begins in Whitby, England, on August 7, 1897. On a stormy night, two coast guard men in raincoats find a deserted schooner, with a dead man tied to its wheel. The man has a crucifix in his hand. In his pocket is a bottle, with a rolled-up piece of paper inside. It’s a journal entry log that warns of danger. Suddenly, an unseen force attacks the two coast guard men.

The movie then does a flashback to July 1897. A cargo ship called The Demeter is about to set sail from the Carpathian mountain range (which spans from Bulgaria to the north and Romania to the south), with the final destination to London. The cargo consists of several livestock animals, such as goats, pigs and chickens. Viewers soon find out that the schooner with the dead man originally came from The Demeter.

Right before The Demeter is about to set sail, several men who were hired to be crew members on the ship end up quitting when they hear that the ship will be leaving after the sun sets. The leader of this superstitious group says that the group will only leave if the ship sails before sunset. The ship’s first mate Wojchek (played by David Dastmalchian), a Polish immigrant who grew up as an orphan, tries to convince the men to change their minds, but they stand firm and then leave the harbor.

The Demeter then leaves with a very understaffed crew, which will soon find out how dangerous this voyage will be. The evil vampire Dracula starts attacking people on the ship, one by one. Everything that you think will happen in this movie does happen, because it’s a rote rehash of other vampire flicks, except it takes place on a ship in 1897. And if there’s a lone survivor in the story, you can easily predict who it will be.

In addition to first mate Wojcheck, the other people on this fatal voyage of The Demeter are intelligent British physician Clemons (played by Corey Hawkins); level-headed Captain Eliot (played by Liam Cunningham); Captain Eliot’s curious 8-year-old grandson Toby (played by Woody Norman); and a mysterious stowaway named Anna (played by Aisling Franciosi), who is found in a comatose state with bloody welts and bites all over her body. Clemons has to give her blood transfusions to keep her alive.

Other people on the ship are four crew members: a dependable Romanian named Olgaren (played by Stefan Kapicic); reliable second mate Larsen (played by Martin Furulund); loudmouth Petrofsky (played by Nikolai Nikolaeff); and youngest crew member Abrams (played by Chris Walley), who has a special bond with Larsen. All four of these crew members don’t say much that’s worth remembering after watching the movie. During a meal around a dining table the men talk about going to a brothel, and they have a laugh when Toby tells them that a brothel is where women take off their knickers.

Also on the Demeter is the ship’s ultra-religious cook Joseph (played by Jon Jon Briones), who is originally from the Philippines. Joseph gets very offended when he hears people curse, because he thinks cursing is a serious sin. Someone should’ve told Joseph that he picked the wrong job, working with a bunch of sailors. He is also highly superstitious.

Not much happens for the first 20 minutes of the movie. Viewers find out that Toby is in charge of looking after the animals. This voyage is going to be Captain Eliot’s last voyage before he retires. Soon after The Demeter sets sail, Captain Eliot tells Vojchek that he wants Vojchek to be his successor. Vojchek, who sees Captain Eliot almost like a father figure, is flattered by this decision.

Captain Eliot keeps the ship’s log. His written entries are occasionally read aloud as voiceovers in the movie. These entries start off as very routine, but then the entries become more alarming as more disturbing things happen on the ship. It’s all so formulaic.

It’s explained early on in the movie that Clemons, who is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, is on the ship because he had been hired for a physician job in Eastern Europe. But once the employers saw Clemons in person (he’s black), they withdrew the job offer. Clemons decided to go back to England and needed a ride, which is how he ended up on this ship of strangers. Other than this backstory, Clemons mostly has a blank slate of a personality.

The issue of racism is briefly mentioned, in relation to Clemons getting a job taken away from him because of his race and a few other racist incidents that he’s experienced outside of this ship. No one on the ship treats Clemons with overt racism. However, he sometimes has to remind some of the crew members of his education to convince them that he’s capable of making certain medical decisions.

There could have been so much more done with the Clemons character, in terms of his character and his life experiences, but “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” filmmakers gave Clemons a cardboard cutout type of character: He’s there, and he’s noticeable, but he doesn’t have much depth. By the end of the movie, viewers will literally not know much about Clemons except that he’s a compassionate doctor who experiences racism.

Likewise, the Anna character and her life story also remains largely unknown. When Anna emerges from her coma and warns that Dracula is on the ship, the crew barely asks her any questions about who she is and what she knows about Dracula. Part of this lack of curiosity is because, at first, most of the crew members think that Anna is hallucinating from her medical injuries. “The Last Voyage of Demeter” has a lot of gore, but it avoids the messy and realistic issue of what it means to be a physically vulnerable woman who’s the only female on board a ship with some coarse sailors.

One of the more idiotic scenes in the movie is when Joseph finds out that something on board is killing the crew, he doesn’t leave during the day when he as a chance—in other words, when things on the water will be much easier to see. Instead, Joseph waits to leave by himself on a rowboat on a very foggy night. Although nothing is wrong with the cast members’ acting in “The Last Voyage of Demeter, ” none of it is special either, because the screenwriting makes all the characters fairly hollow.

Visually, “The Last Voyage of Demeter” is just a dump of mediocrity. This movie is bloody, but it’s not very scary. The best Dracula movies show the glimmers of humanity in Dracula. “The Voyage of the Demeter” just makes Dracula a drab monster who’s on the loose, with no concern in telling anything interesting about Dracula. For a movie about a vampire icon, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is bloodless and toothless when it comes to telling a good story.

Review: ‘God’s Creatures,’ starring Emily Watson and Paul Mescal

Culture Representation: Taking place in an unnamed rural village in Ireland, the dramatic film “God’s Creatures” features an all-white cast of characters representing the working-class.

Culture Clash: A woman who manages her family’s oyster farm has to decide how loyal she wants to be to her son after he’s accused of raping one of her employees, and she tells a lie to create an alibi for him.

Culture Audience: “God’s Creatures” will appeal mainly to people who are fans of star Emily Watson and well-acted movies about moral dilemmas.

Despite its slow pacing, “God’s Creatures” is a very effective psychological drama that brings up ethical questions about family loyalty and dealing with sexual assault. Emily Watson gives an emotionally stirring performance as a conflicted mother who has to reckon with her own responsibility in possibly covering up a serious crime. It’s a movie that shows why denial can be just as toxic as a criminal act.

Directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, “God’s Creatures” (written by Shane Crowley) was filmed on location in County Donegal, Ireland. It’s here, in an unnamed fishing village, that Aileen O’Hara (played by Watson) thinks she’s living an uncomplicated life that revolves around her work and her family. Aileen has been happily married to her husband Con (played by Declan Conlon) for about 35 years. Together, they own an oyster farm, where Aileen works as a manager of the oyster processing plant. Con mainly supervises the oyster fishermen.

Aileen and Con have two children: Erin O’Sullivan (played by Toni O’Rourke) and Brian O’Hara (played by Paul Mescal), who are opposites in many ways. Erin, who has lived in the village her entire life, is in her 30s and is a single mother to an infant son. Brian, who is in his mid-to-late 20s, is a freewheeling bachelor with no children. For the past seven years, Brian lived in Australia and had stopped contacting his family. Near the beginning of the movie, Brian suddenly shows up in the village and expects to pick up right where he left off before he moved away to Australia.

The father of Erin’s baby is not in Erin’s life and won’t be involved in raising the child. Erin knows that many people in the community are religious and politically conservative. And therefore, she’s aware that being a single mother who is not widowed carries a certain stigma. Based on the fact that Erin has a different last name from her parents, it’s implied that she’s divorced. It’s not clear if her ex-husband is the father of her child or not, but Erin has told her family that the father of her child didn’t even know she was pregnant and therefore doesn’t know the child exists.

Brian is a prodigal son who was known as a troublemaker before he moved away to Australia. He is welcomed back with open arms by Aileen, who is very happy to see him. Con and Erin are much more wary and skeptical of Brian’s sudden reappearance. It’s open to interpretation why Brian suddenly wanted to move back to this small village. Was he running home to his family or running away from something?

Brian won’t really say why he suddenly decided to move back to his hometown without giving his family any advance notice. His family doesn’t press the issue, and he lives in Aileen and Con’s home. Brian is also quickly given a job as a fisherman in the family business. Although the O’Hara family is responsible for employing about 40 to 50 people in the village, the family lives modestly but is aware that the family has a certain amount of power in this community.

Con’s elderly father Paddy O’Hara (played by Lalor Roddy) also lives on the family property. Paddy, who is mute and might have dementia, passed on the family’s oyster business to Con, who promised Paddy that he would keep the business going. In his current mental state, Paddy is mostly unresponsive when people try to talk to him.

However, when Brian comes back to live in the family home, Paddy seems to light up when he’s around Brian. Brian is attentive to Paddy and helps take care of him like a dutiful and compassionate grandson. At one point, Brian is able to coax Paddy out of Paddy’s muteness, by getting Paddy to sing out loud.

It becomes obvious early on in the story that Aileen favors Brian over Erin. Brian has a very charismatic side to him where he shows that he can be outgoing and charming. He’s a “mama’s boy” who knows that Aileen is more likely than Con to forgive or overlook Brian’s flaws and misdeeds. As far as Aileen is concerned, whatever wrongdoings that Brian committed in the past, they should stay in the past. Aileen thinks Brian deserves a chance to prove that he’s turned his life around.

The opening scene of “God’s Creatures” is a subtle indication of how this village is rooted in traditions and superstitions. A fisherman named Mark Fitz, who worked for the O’Hara family, has been found dead in the sea, and his body has been taken out of the water. He drowned because he didn’t know how to swim. His mother Mary Fitz (played by Marion O’Dwyer) works in the processing plant. This drowning happened before Brian came back to the village to live.

The villagers traditionally don’t want their fishermen to know how to swim, so that if one of them is drowning, other people won’t be responsible for jumping in the water to save the drowning person. No one really questions this tradition, which is an indication that people in the community are willing to sacrifice others for a “survival of the fittest” mentality. As an example of Erin’s willingness to be a nonconformist in this tight-knit village, she tells her family that she’s going to teach her son how to swim.

One of Erin’s closest friends is Sarah Murphy (played by Aisling Franciosi), who works at the O’Hara family’s oyster processing plant. Like many people in the village, Sarah has lived there her entire life. Sarah, who is closer in age to Brian than she is to Erin, is a former schoolmate of Brian’s. She is trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage to Francie D’Arcy (played by Brendan McCormack), who is very controlling and often accuses her of being unfaithful to him. Sarah having a different last name from her husband is an indication that she has an independent streak.

Sarah confides in Erin that due to her arguments with Francie, “I’ve been back in my parents’ house for a couple of nights. Time puts it all into perspective very quickly. He was brutal with his words. Still, though, he’s just like anyone else, though. We’re all God’s creatures in the dark.”

One night, Brian is hanging out at a local pub owned by a man named Dan Nell (played by Enda Oates), who is also the chief bartender. Sarah is there too, and Brian strikes up a flirtatious conversation with her. “I can’t believe you’re still here, to be honest,” Brian tells Sarah. “I thought you’d long abandon this place.”

Sarah replies, “Everything I need was here. I didn’t have to go looking for it.” Brian says, “Likewise.” This statement from Brian seems to be not very honest, since he obviously was looking for something somewhere else, by living in Australia for years and deliberately not contacting his family.

Brian then begins to reminisce about the good times that he and Sarah used to have when they were teenagers. Sarah curtly says about this reminsicing, “I wouldn’t get too hung up on it if I were you.” It’s implied that Brian has been attracted to Sarah for years. And now that he knows she’s in a troubled marriage, he wants to know if he has a chance with her. However, Sarah quickly shuts down this possibility.

About one week after this encounter, the O’Hara family business gets some bad news: Fungus has been found in some of the harvested oysters, so the fishing operations are temporarily halted. Around the same time, Sarah has been acting strangely on the job. On day, she faints near one of the conveyor belts, and when Aileen goes over to help her, Sarah says to her in a hostile manner: “Don’t touch me!”

Aileen will soon find out why Sarah is acting this way. One night, a garda named Mike (played by Andrew Bennett) visits the O’Hara family home to tell Aileen that a woman (whose name he won’t disclose) has accused Brian of raping her the week before. Brian has denied it and says that on the night in question of the alleged rape, he was at home all night, and Aileen can vouch for him. Mike asks Aileen if Brian’s alibi is true, and Aileen automatically says yes.

However, later when Aileen confronts Brian about where he was that night, he admits he was out in Dan Nell’s pub, where his accuser says that they were at, but that he had no sexual contact with her. Brian vigorously tells Aileen that he didn’t sexually assault anyone. It isn’t long before Aileen finds out that Sarah is Brian’s accuser.

Aileen believes Brian, so she feels resentment toward Sarah and thinks that Sarah is trying to ruin Brian’s life. Sarah feels resentment toward Aileen, because she thinks that Aileen is willfully covering up for Brian. Meanwhile, Erin is inclined to believe Sarah and doesn’t like it that Aileen refuses to hear Sarah’s side of the story. Needless to say, the tension builds when an investigation yields a result that is bound to make one side very unhappy.

“God’s Creatures” is a “slow burn” story where the last third of the movie is the best part. As soon as Aileen finds out that Brian doesn’t have an alibi for the period of time that he was accused of raping Sarah, the seeds of doubt have been planted in Aileen’s mind, but she tries to repress this doubt at all costs. Erin, who always felt like Aileen unfairly favored Brian over Erin, becomes increasingly infuriated with Aileen for what Erin thinks is misguided parental protection. Con stays out of this family conflict by not taking either side.

Meanwhile, Brian gets the support from many people in the community who think of him as a reformed “good guy,” and they want the rape accusation to go away. As for Sarah, coming forward with this rape allegation has made life much worse for her at her home and at work. She gets bullied and shamed by certain members of the community who think that she’s lying.

“God’s Creatures” is a scathing and often-melancholy rumination of how society often deals with sexual assault—a crime that is typically very hard to prove because there are usually only two witnesses: the accuser and the accused. If the accused admits to having sexual contact with the accuser, the accused usually says that this sexual contact was consensual. Sarah is blamed by some people for waiting a week to come forward with her accusation. It’s a common reaction from people who don’t know or don’t care that when an accuser chooses to comes forward is not proof of an accuser’s honesty or dishonesty about the allegation.

Watson gives a very nuanced performance as Aileen, who thinks of herself as a moral and upstanding person, but Aileen starts to question what kind of person she is the more she begins to doubt that Brian is telling the truth. Mescal probably has the hardest role to play, since the Brian character is supposed to keep viewers guessing up to a certain point if he’s a “good guy” or not. Franciosi has some standout moments in her role as Sarah, who finds out quickly that her entire reputation can change once she’s labeled a rape accuser.

The rape accusation causes a rift in the O’Hara family, as Erin makes it clear that she’s on Sarah’s side. However, the movie also shows how the accusation affects the entire community, not just the O’Hara family and Sarah. “God’s Creatures” is a depiction of how society can be complicit in enabling harm. And in this community, where the attitude is “survival of the fittest,” justice and peace often can’t be found in a court of law.
