Review: ‘The Unbreakable Boy,’ starring Zachary Levi, Meghann Fahy, Jacob Laval, Drew Powell and Patricia Heaton

“The Unbreakable Boy”

Directed by Jon Gunn

Culture Representation: Taking place in Oklahoma, the dramatic film “The Unbreakable Boy” (based on the non-fiction book of the same name) features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few African Americans and Asians) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: A married couple with two sons have ups and downs in their family life because of their older son’s autism and rare bone condition; the couple’s financial problems; and the father’s alcoholism.

Culture Audience: “The Unbreakable Boy” will appeal mainly to people who are fans of the movie’s headliners and faith-based movies that put schmaltz over realism.

“The Unbreakable Boy” puts a fairytale spin on a real-life family’s unsettling problems. There’s plenty of melodrama about medical conditions and financial struggles, but there’s an over-use of movie clichés that sugarcoat the truth. The truth is that the family’s problems that are depicted in this sappy movie don’t get resolved as easily in real life as the filmmakers want people to think they can be resolved, by presenting a perky boy with autism as if he’s some kind of good luck charm used for the family’s benefit.

Written and directed by Jon Gunn, “The Unbreakable Boy” is based on the 2014 non-fiction book “The Unbreakable Boy: A Father’s Fear, a Son’s Courage, and a Story of Unconditional Love,” written by Scott LeRette and Susy Flory. “The Unbreakable Boy” isn’t a typical faith-based movie that gets preachy about religion, although there are certainly some religious elements to the film. Instead, it’s a somewhat misleading movie that makes people think that it will be about mostly about the “unbreakable boy.” The movie actually takes a detour and becomes about how the boy’s self-admitted disappointing father goes on a downward spiral and has to find a way to prove that he’s a responsible parent and husband.

It’s a shame that the movie’s title is not reflective of the movie’s agenda and focus. “The Unbreakable Boy” movie also changes the age of the title character, just to make the most of having a cute underage kid to make the movie more appealing to families. In the book, the “unbreakable boy” is actually 18 years old. In the movie, he’s 13. It’s easy to see why the filmmakers wanted to reduce the age of “the unbreakable boy”: It’s more dramatic to have an underage kid be emotionally wiser and more honest than his screwed-up father. Making the kid a legal adult is much less compelling.

“The Unbreakable Boy” takes place in Oklahoma, where the movie was filmed on location. The movie’s title character is talkative 13-year-old Austin LeRette (played by Jacob Laval), who has autism and who was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare condition that causes bones to break easily. Austin inherited osteogenesis imperfecta from his mother Teresa (played by Meghann Fahy), who has the same condition. Austin, whose nickname is Auz-Man (his imaginary superhero alter ego), is the chirpy narrator of the movie’s story. Austin likes to wear a jester hat, which becomes a symbol of his cheerful optimism.

Austin says in the narration that sometimes things get broken in life. He ominously says, “This is the night when everything broke.” “The Unbreakable Boy” begins with a scene where Austin’s father Scott LeRette (played by Zachary Levi) is drunk at a New Year’s Eve party at a country club. Scott has Austin and Austin’s 11-year-old brother Logan (played by Gavin Warren) at the party with him when he drives away from the party with the boys as passengers.

The car swerves and narrowly misses hitting another car. Scott is obviously too drunk to drive, but the movie never really shows anyone actually confront him about this reckless and irresponsible driving, nor is it shown if he got arrested for driving under the influence. This drunk-driving incident is never mentioned again and the only clue that it happened is when Scott is later shown in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

“The Unbreakable Boy” movie does that a lot in the movie: It has a dramatic, tension-filled buildup to a problem. But then, it abruptly segues to another part of the family’s life and leaves many questions unanswered, or it presents a trite, not-very-believable solution to the problem. You get the feeling that this family has a lot more dirty laundry that they just didn’t want to put in this movie. (Scott and Teresa LeRette are two of the executive producers of the movie.)

After this drunk-driving scene, the movie quickly goes into flashback mode, as Austin describes how his parents met and how the couple’s relationship progressed to becoming married parents. Thirteen years earlier, Scott was working as a medical supply salesperson when he went into a clothing store to buy a pair of trousers. Some green khaki trousers caught his eye but what really captured his interest was Teresa, a sales clerk at the store.

It’s mutual attraction at first sight. During this “meet cute” moment, Scott says he’ll buy up to eight pairs of the trousers if she’ll go out on a date with him. He also compliments Teresa on her bright blue eyes, which she says are bright because of a birth defect. Teresa gives him her phone number and says he doesn’t have to buy anything in the store but he can take her out for coffee. On their first date, a casually dressed Teresa is surprised that instead of going to a coffee shop, Scott has arranged for them to go to an upscale restaurant.

It’s the beginning of some communication problems that start early in the couple’s relatonship. Teresa has secrets that eventually get exposed. Scott and Teresa are casually dating for a few months when Teresa gets pregnant. Scott comes from a religious Christian family, so when he finds out that Teresa is pregnant, he proposes marriage. Teresa and Scott aren’t “in love” yet, but they’re getting there.

Teresa says no to the marriage proposal because she doesn’t think that she and Scott need to get married. She’s still emotionally scarred by her parents’ toxic marriage. Teresa says her father was an abusive alcoholic. Teresa also tells Scott that she has osteogenesis imperfecta, which is genetic, and she’s afraid this unborn child will have osteogenesis imperfecta too. Scott is more optimistic than Teresa is that their unborn child won’t have osteogenesis imperfecta.

Teresa’s main support in her family is her sister Lori (played by Amy Acker), a character who’s just in this movie as a sounding board to Teresa’s rants. Teresa’s parents are never shown in the movie, but Scott’s parents are. Scott’s father Dick LeVette (played by Todd Terry) takes the news in stride about the unplanned pregnancy. By contrast, Scott’s mother Marcia LeVette (played by Patricia Heaton) is furious because she knows that Scott now has to delay his plans to quit his job to go to grad school.

Marcia throws and breaks objects as she angrily shouts at Scott that he’s throwing his life away. That kind of violence isn’t very Christian, but the movie glosses over Marcia’s nasty temper as acceptable because she’s the type of “righteous” mother that these faith-based movies frequently excuse when these mothers are overly judgmental or hypocritical. Scott even jokes to his father that Marcia’s temper tantrum isn’t as bad as Scott thought it would be.

Scott and a pregnant Teresa move in together. And that’s when he finds out Teresa’s biggest secret when he discovers some of her legal papers: She’s been married and divorced twice before. Both marriages were short-lived, and her ex-husbands are no longer in her life. Scott gets upset but eventually forgives Teresa, who tells him that she’s sorry for not disclosing this information before their relationship got serious.

Scott proposes marriage again, and she says yes. Teresa wants to get married in a church. Scott wants to get married at a courthouse. Austin says in a voiceover that his parents reached a compromise. The next scene shows Scott and Teresa getting married in a church. It’s the movie’s way of saying that Teresa usually gets her way in the relationship. Teresa is never seen working outside the home again, so the movie implies that she became a homemaker after the birth of her children.

Austin is born, and the movie spends a great deal of time showing him as an infant, as a toddler (played by Roy Jackson Miller) and as a 5-to-6-year-old (played by Kellen Martelli), which is the period of time that Scott and Teresa find out that Austin has osteogenesis imperfecta and autism. There are several montages of Austin breaking his bones in various ways, usually from running around or jumping while he’s playing. Scott is shown as the only parent who’s with Austin when Austin gets his most serious injuries, which is another way of the movie putting an emphasis on Scott being the more “irresponsible” parent.

Logan is born two years after Austin. Logan, who does not have any health issues, is a compassionate and protective brother who gets sidelined a lot in this story because so much of the kid focus is on Austin, who does a few horrendous and abusive things while in a manic state of mind. Logan does not get enough credit for being such a wonderful child when Logan has so many reasons to be bitter and resentful about his parents having to pay so much attention to Austin.

Austin has the type of autism where he doesn’t know how to pick up on social cues, he will talk incessantly, and he will often take things literally. He will repeat doing things in almost an obsessive-compulsive way. He’s highly intelligent but socially awkward. And you know what that means: He gets bullied at school, but the bullying is psychological and emotional, not physical. The main bully to Austin is Tyler (played by Pilot Bunch), who actually gets physically aggressive with Logan, not Austin.

“The Unbreakable Boy” shows the ups and downs of the family and how Austin remains mostly positive through it all. Scott’s alcoholism gets worse after he loses his job. But he’s not the only irresponsible parent in the household. Teresa becomes unemployed too and appears to have become addicted to playing video games and shopping for things that the family didn’t need, thereby driving the family into debt. Teresa’s culpability is glossed over a lot in this movie, while Scott gets blamed the most as being the “terrible parent.”

But those are not all the questionable things about this schmaltzy film. Throughout the movie, Scott has an imaginary adult friend named Joe (played by Drew Powell), who’s supposed to be Scott’s conscience and “voice of reason.” Scott talks out loud to Joe, who sometimes dresses in identical clothing as Scott, and sometimes in different clothing. Joe mostly looks like a lumberjack who has nothing better to do than to hang out with Scott, who becomes a “sad sack” as his problems get worse.

The problem with “The Unbreakable Boy” is that it plays fast and loose with the truth and avoids answering some crucial questions. For starters, the movie unrealistically makes it look like Scott and Teresa had to take care of their two kids all by themself, even though there are indications that plenty of people could’ve helped. This potential support includes Lori, Scott’s parents and people at the church where Scott and Teresa attend. (Peter Facinelli has a supporting role as Preacher Rick, the church’s amiable leader.) The movie never shows if Scott and Teresa asked for any help in taking care of their kids. You don’t even see a babysitter in the movie.

Second, the couple’s debt is a big issue in the story, but the movie never explains if Teresa was willing to get a job to help pay off the debt, or if she and Scott agreed that she would be a homemaker, no matter what their financial situation. Sure, Teresa could’ve hidden all the debt she racked up, and Scott eventually found out. But the movie takes a very patriarchal view that it was Scott’s responsibility to fix this problem, even though Teresa was the one who caused the overspending problem. There’s also a scene where Teresa looks worried when she sees Austin’s medical bills that are a five-figure total, but then that medical debt is never mentioned again.

Third, that drunk driving scene is dropped into the beginning of the movie and then never properly addressed again. Instead, “The Unbreakable Boy” is more concerned about underage Austin preaching at the audience when he rambles on about his philosophies and observations about life. It all becomes a bit too phony, just like the movie’s force-fed concept that all anyone has to do is be in Austin’s presence, and life will turn out just fine.

Despite the movie’s obvious flaws, Laval gives a mostly delightful performance, although people with autism are probably the best judges of how autism is portrayed in the movie. (“The Unbreakable Boy” was originally scheduled to be released in 2022, but it was released in 2025, when Laval looks a lot different than he did when he filmed the movie.) Levi seems to enjoy portraying adults with emotional maturity issues, so this role as a flaky father is just more of the same for him. The rest of the cast members are serviceable, not outstanding, in their roles.

To its credit, “The Unbreakable Boy” has a positive message about how kindness can go a long way in changing someone’s life for the better. The movie also brings more awareness about osteogenesis imperfecta and autism, although families should teach any underage and impressionable children that this type of movie is not quite as realistic as it should be in portraying how public schools for children are legally allowed to resolve certain issues that are depicted in the movie. What’s really “breakable” in “The Unbreakable Boy” is how it reaches a breaking point of credibility in how these issues and more are mishandled in the movie.

Review: ‘Average Joe’ (2024), starring Eric Close and Amy Acker

Culture Representation: Taking place from 1978 to 2022, in Washington State, the dramatic film “Average Joe” (based on real events) features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few African Americans) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: A high school football coach is pressured to quit his job for briefly praying on the field after each game, and he takes his religious freedom case all the way to the Supreme Court.

Culture Audience: “Average Joe” will appeal mainly to people who are interested in faith-based dramas or legal dramas that are inspired by true stories.

“Average Joe” is not a great movie, but there’s solid acting in this faith-based drama, inspired by a true story, about a high school football coach who took his fight to pray on the field all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. It’s preachy but watchable. The movie doesn’t portray anyone as saintly; all of the main characters have flaws.

Directed by Harold Cronk and written by Stephanie Katz, “Average Joe” takes a while to get to the heart of the story. The movie is really a biopic of Joe Kennedy, a former U.S. Marine who became a football coach and crusader for religious freedom. Whether or not people believe in any religion, the issue that the movie addresses is where people in the United States can have a right to pray if this prayer is not imposed on others.

Much of “Average Joe” (which takes place mostly in Washington state) is a narrative flashback told by middle-aged Joe (played by Eric Close) and his wife Denise (played by Amy Acker), as they sit on a living room couch and tell their story as if they’re talking to documentary filmmakers. (“Average Joe” was actually filmed in Louisiana.) Beginning in 1978, Joe—then known as Joey (played by Ezra Richardson)—was a rebellious 12-year-old who frequently got arrested for fighting or petty theft.

Joey’s unnamed adoptive parents (played by Ann Mahoney and Lyle Brocato) essentially give up on him, relinquish custody of him to the state, and move away. Joey eventually ends up in a group home for boys, where an adult leader named Ben (played by John Neisler) advises Joey to give God a try in finding inner peace. Ben also shows Joey an old, gnarly tree and says that Joey reminds him of the tree because the tree is a survivor.

During this time, Joey meets 12-year-old Denise Kennedy (played by Anabelle Holloway), who also comes from a troubled background. Her parents are constantly fighting. Denise’s father is also physically abusive. Denise and Joey find comfort in each other and develop romantic feelings for each other. Joey and Denise also write love letters to each other.

In 1990, when Joe (played by Austin Woods) is in his mid-20s, he enlists in the U.S. Marines. Joe and Denise lose touch with each other. During a visit back to his hometown, Joe sees Denise (played by Andrea Figliomeni) at a pub and hopes to rekindle their romance, but is dismayed to see that she is married and pregnant.

Denise tells Joe that she’s sorry that she stopped writing to Joe, but her life went in a different direction. Present-day Joe (on the living room couch) then says that after he found out that Denise was married, Joe married Denise’s cousin when he was in his 20s. He also quips that family reunions were “awkward.”

Denise and Joe each had children from these marriages, but each marriage ended in divorce. Denise’s first husband was abusive to her. In 2005, middle-aged Joe and Denise—now both divorced with adult children who no longer live with them—reconnect, have a whirlwind romance, and get married.

After a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Marines (where he was a staff drill sergeant), Joe retires from the military. In 2008, he becomes a part-time football coach for Northlake High School, whose football team is called the Wolverines. The team is somewhat on a losing streak until Joe uses some of his military training to improve the team.

After every game, Joe gets down on one knee and prays silently and briefly on the field. He doesn’t hold his hands in prayer. It just looks like he’s doing a short, non-verbal meditation as he bows his head. He doesn’t force or ask anyone to pray with him. This prayer ritual doesn’t become a problem for Joe until 2015, when some people in the community start complaining about it because they think it’s a violation of the separation between church and state that is required for government-operated schools.

Northlake High School is a public school, which is why some people in the community object to Joe’s prayer meditations in public on school property. Other people in the community support Joe and think that a public school should not dictate if someone prays in this way on school property. Joe is given a warning by the school district to stop praying in public on school property, or else he will get fired. Joe doesn’t stop, but he then submits his forced resignation before he can be fired. (In real life, Joe Kennedy resigned from Bremerton High School in Washington state in 2015.)

Complicating matters, Denise works in human resources for the school district. Joe decides to take legal action, by claiming the school district committed religious discrimination against him and violated his First Amendment rights. This legal battle eventually takes a toll on the marriage of Denise and Joe. Denise also has anxiety/mental health issues that are aggravated by this legal fight.

Even though “Average Joe” is about a serious subject matter, the movie has light touches of comedy that usually work adequately. The narrative structure needed improvement by reducing some of the screen time for Joe’s younger years, because by the time the legal battle is shown, the movie is more than halfway over. Many viewers already know the outcome of this case, but those who don’t know shouldn’t be surprised, because Joe’s story wouldn’t have been made into a movie if it had another outcome.

Even with some hokey aspects of “Average Joe,” the movie is fairly credible when depicting the marriage of Joe and Denise, who are best friends and soul mates but who also have their share of realistic marital clashes. “Average Joe” could have used more insight into how Joe and Denise are as parents. However, the story makes Joe and Denise well-rounded enough that they come across as believable people. “Average Joe” delivers on being a feel-good movie, as long as viewers know in advance that it has a faith-based perspective.

Review: ‘Ordinary Angels’ (2024), starring Hilary Swank, Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis and Tamala Jones

Culture Representation: Taking place in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1993 and 1994, the dramatic film “Ordinary Angels (inspired by real events) features a predominantly white cast of characters (with some African Americans and one Asian) representing the working-class, middle-class and wealthy.

Culture Clash: An alcoholic hair stylist feels compelled to help a 5-year-old girl, who is dying from a liver disease and whose family can’t afford her medical expenses, which include a liver transplant that’s needed to save her life.

Culture Audience: “Ordinary Angels” will appeal primarily to fans of star Hilary Swank and faith-based movies that over-exaggerate true stories.

“Ordinary Angels” is supposed to be based on a true story, but it has plot holes and a fluffy fantasy that all you need to erase medical expenses is a woman who can make $435,000 in hospital bills disappear with sweet talking and blueberry muffins as gifts. There is literally a scene where the protagonist convinces a hospital to cancel this debt by asking a hospital administrator in a meeting how it would feel if the administrator had a sick daughter and couldn’t pay her medical bills. That’s just one of many eye-rolling “only in a movie” scenarios that “Ordinary Angels” tries to shove down viewers’ throats and expect people to swallow as the whole truth.

It’s condescending and gross pandering that will only work with people who want to ignore or forget that medical care in places without universal health insurance has disturbing inequalities for people who aren’t in certain demographics. The end of the movie also has a hokey “race against time” during a blizzard that looks like a real event was very exaggerated in the movie for dramatic purposes. And in other parts of the movie, the truth and reality are over-simplified in order to manipulate certain emotions out of viewers.

Directed by Jon Gunn, “Ordinary Angels” was written by Kelly Fremon Craig and Meg Tilly. The movie takes place in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1993 and 1994. (“Ordinary Angels” was actually filmed in Manitoba, Canada.) In other words, this story took place before the existence of the Internet and social media, which are now common ways for people to raise funds for medical expenses. And the story also takes place before the Affordable Care Act existed in the United States, because the family experiencing the child medical crisis in this story did not have health insurance at the time.

The protagonist of “Ordinary Angels” has the disease of alcoholism and is estranged from her young adult son (her only child) because of her alcoholism. However, she is presented in this unrealistic-looking movie as someone who is a crusading angel in all other aspects of her life, where everything conveniently falls into place because she’s able to talk her way into getting what she wants. On her road to redemption, she has chosen a dying girl to be her obsessive “pet project.”

“Ordinary Angels” begins in 1993, by showing a talkative divorcée named Sharon Stevens (played by Hilary Swank) at a bar, doing something that she’s done many times in her life: Get drunk and call attention to herself with her drunken antics. She wakes up with a hangover and finds out that her boss/close friend Rose (played by Tamala Jones) brought her home from the bar the night before, because Sharon was too drunk to get home on her own. Rose owns the hair salon Shear Elegance, where Sharon works as a hair stylist.

Rose sternly lectures Sharon about this drunken blackout that Sharon has had: “This can’t happen again. I’m officially worried.” Shortly after this incident, Rose persuades Sharon to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where Sharon defiantly declares to everyone: “I’m not an alcoholic. I’m just a pissed-off hairdresser with a splitting headache and an annoying friend.”

Swank has done this type of “sassy with grit” character many times before (see most of the movies where she’s had a starring role), so there’s nothing new or surprising about her performance. Just like the other performances in “Ordinary Angels,” it’s serviceable and predictable. “Ordinary Angels” is a faith-based movie, so expect to see a lot of references to God and praying. That’s not what’s offensive about this movie. What’s offensive is how it relentlessly insults viewers’ intelligence about how medical crises can be solved in the real world.

After leaving the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, Sharon sees a front-page newspaper story about a 35-year-old mother named Theresa Schmitt (played by Amy Acker, shown in flashbacks), who has died of Wegener’s disease and has a daughter who needs a liver transplant. (The real Theresa Schmitt actually died of Wegener’s disease in 1992, at the age of 29.) Theresa’s surviving family members include her husband Ed Schmitt (played by Alan Ritchson) and their two daughters: 5-year-old Michelle Schmitt (played by Emily Mitchell) and Ashley Schmitt (played by Skywalker Hughes), who’s about 7 or 8 years old.

Both children are cute and adorable, but the movie unrealistically shows them as having no personality flaws. These two siblings also don’t get into any arguments and don’t show any rivalry with each other, which is another example of how phony this movie looks. “Ordinary Angels” completely ignores what can happen when a sick child in the family gets almost all the attention and any other children in the family might feel neglected or resentful. In real life, Michelle was 3 years old when she needed a transplant, but the movie made her 5 years old, because a 5-year-old is more capable than a 3-year-old of saying precocious lines of “cute kid” dialogue, as Michelle does in this movie.

Michelle has a rare liver disease called biliary atresia. Ed, who works as an independent-contractor roofer, is overwhelmed with debts of more than $435,000 in medical bills for Michelle and his late wife Theresa. He has these medical bills because he does not have health insurance for himself or his family. Ed also has the burden of other expenses for himself and his family. After the death of Theresa, Ed’s retired mother Barbara Schmitt (played by Nancy Travis) has moved into the home to help Ed with Michelle and Ashley.

Sharon sees the news story about ailing Michelle and immediately feels like she wants to do something to help the Schmitt family. Sharon starts by going to Theresa’s funeral. And when Ed asks her who she is, Sharon awkwardly explains that she’s a stranger who wants to give her condolences. Ed uncomfortably thanks her and thinks that will be the last he’ll see of Sharon. But there would be no “Ordinary Angels” movie if that was the last time Ed saw Sharon.

After the funeral, Sharon throws herself full-force into raising money for the Schmitt family. She has a fundraising event at the hair salon. She hands out flyers. She tells everyone she knows about the fundraiser. The fundraiser gets more than $3,250. She then goes over to the Schmitt home to deliver the money, which Ed reluctantly takes, because (as the movie repeats often, to irritating levels) Ed doesn’t feel right about taking charity from this lady whom he thinks is kind of a mess.

Barbara is more open to accepting this help. She’s the one who persuades Ed to invite Sharon into the house for dinner when Sharon delivers the fundraising money as a surprise. “Ordinary Angels” makes it clear that Sharon does not have the ulterior motive of trying to have a romantic relationship with physically attractive Ed, who is still deep in grief over the loss of Theresa. However, Sharon inserts herself into the Schmitt family’s life like a volunteer nanny/business manager/life coach, including helping take care of Michelle and Ashley; sorting out Ed’s bills and explaining his finances to him; and giving career tips and pep talks to Ed when he comes up with an idea of how he can make more money as a roofer.

Sharon even accompanies Ed to a sales pitch meeting with a potential employer, and she speaks for Ed like she’s a publicist. At one point in the story, Ed privately comes right out and tells overzealous Sharon that he resents all the help she’s giving because he thinks he should be the one to give the most help to his family. Sharon just smiles and says that Ed can just keep on resenting while she keeps on helping. It’s a very glib answer that glosses over the way that Sharon has fixated so fast on this family.

Yes, Sharon is a do-gooder, but the way she goes about it is kind of stalker-ish. There’s a scene where she calls the hospital where Ed owes money and pretends to be his accountant sister (who doesn’t really exist), just so she can find out how much money Ed owes for his medical bills. (It’s how she finds out he owes $435,000.) It’s a huge invasion of privacy on Sharon’s part, not to mention a HIPAA violation for the hospital to give out this information, but the person on the other line tells Sharon this information, because the movie wants people to believe that “ordinary angel” Sharon is who she is and can be dishonest and violate people’s privacy in order to get what she wants.

Sharon’s overly perky and ultra-helpful persona is a mask for some deep-seated issues in her own personal life. A scene in the movie shows Sharon going to a bar where her musician son Derek (played by Dempsey Bryk) is setting up some musical equipment before his band’s performance. Sharon seems to want to make amends for whatever she did to hurt him, but Derek’s hostile reaction makes it obvious he’s not interested in a reconciliation at that moment. It’s mentioned later in the movie that Sharon’s ex-husband (who is also a musician and not seen in the movie) abandoned Sharon and Derek when Derek was a child.

It’s unclear when Sharon became an alcoholic, but this alcoholism caused her to be a parent who did a lot of emotional damage to Derek. The movie hints at but never goes into details about this abuse, because those details would ruin the movie’s narrative that Sharon is an “ordinary angel” who wants to redeem herself. You don’t have to be a psychiatrist to know that one of the main reasons why Sharon is doing this charity work is out of guilt for her own failures as a parent.

One of the other reasons why Derek is estranged from Sharon is because she won’t admit that she’s an alcoholic and won’t get help for this disease. Derek knows that Sharon has been spending a lot of time helping the Schmitt family. He makes a cutting remark, which is one of the best lines in an otherwise corny movie. Derek says to Sharon about Sharon’s obsession with helping Michelle: “That girl, I feel sorry for her, not because she’s sick but because she’s counting on you for help.”

Sharon is able to overcome big obstacles with some very trite montages of her calling up people or by going to people’s offices, usually with blueberry muffins as gifts. At one point in the movie, viewers might ask themselves, “Does Sharon even work at her salon job anymore?” That question is answered in another part of the movie, when Rose gets upset with Sharon for not showing up to work for weeks, because Sharon wants to spend her time helping the Schmitts. Most people in the real world would get fired over this chronic absenteeism, but “ordinary angel” Sharon guilt-trips Rose into not firing her, because she lectures Rose by saying Rose should be more understanding of Sharon’s charity crusade.

Perhaps one of the worst things about “Ordinary Angels” is how it portrays Ed as a gruff and reluctantly grateful parent who bizarrely refuses to accept any more donations at a time when Michelle needed the money the most for a liver transplant. At this point in the movie, he comes across as a selfish parent who has put his own personal pride over his child’s health. It’s completely heinous, but the movie excuses Ed’s parental attitude problem. It just becomes another plot device for “ordinary angel” Sharon to show Ed that she’s more generous and more capable of solving his family’s problems than he is.

There’s also an unspoken narrative in the movie that the “Ordinary Angels” filmmakers don’t want you to think about: Cute kids with deadly diseases are more likely to get help and donations from strangers, compared to other people with deadly diseases who aren’t cute kids. Does that make the lives of those “other people” less of a priority for people like Sharon Stevens? According to the way Sharon acts in this movie, the answer is “yes.” The harsh reality is that this “ordinary angel” was very selective in whom she wanted to give all of this help to that went above and beyond what most people in her situation would do.

It’s obvious that the filmmakers and stars of the movie made “Ordinary Angels” as an inspirational film with the intention to win awards. (There’s nothing Oscar-worthy about this movie though.) “Ordinary Angels” does a disservice to people who are going through real-life medical crises by warping the truth and exaggerating real circumstances to make this story look like a fairy tale. The only award that “Ordinary Angels” deserves is Most Likely to Give False Hope.
