BET Awards

The following is a press release from BET:

BET Networks announced R&B music legend, and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Anita Baker will be honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the “BET Awards” 2018. In addition, for the first time, BET has selected six individuals – James Shaw Jr., Naomi Wadler, Mamoudou Gassama, Justin Blackman, Shaun King and Anthony Borges – to be honored as Humanitarian Heroes. Hosted by Jamie Foxx, the  “BET Awards” 2018 will air LIVE on Sunday, June 24 at 8 pm ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CA on BET.

Anita Baker is undeniably one of the greatest living legends in the music industry and BET will honor her accordingly at the June 24th ceremony. With a career that spanned nearly four decades, she made an everlasting impression on the sound of Soul and R&B music that has inspired generations to come. Ms. Baker is regarded as a trailblazer, opening doors for many females in the industry. Known for ballads such as, “Body & Soul,” “Just Because,” and “Giving You The Best That I Got,” Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has seven platinum albums. Earlier this year the venerable Ms. Baker announced her retirement and is currently embarking on her farewell concert series.

BET is taking an exciting new direction when it comes to honoring humanitarians.  This year, the Network will recognize six individuals who have done extraordinary things in some of the most disheartening of situations. The intention is to remind everyone that you don’t have to be a celebrity to give back and support others in need; we all have the opportunity to make a difference for the betterment of humankind. The Humanitarian Heroes include, James Shaw Jr. (disarmed Waffle House shooter), Naomi Wadler (11yr old speaker at March For Our Lives), Mamoudou Gassama (Climbed outside of building to save dangling 4-year-old), Justin Blackman (only student to walk out of his High School on National Student Walk-Out Day), Shaun King (journalist who has been instrumental in covering untold stories in the black community), Anthony Borges (Parkland Victim/Hero who threw himself in line of fire – shot 5 times). The bravery and strength of the highlighted 2018 honorees is truly exceptional.

Snoop Dogg, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, Sly Pyper and Tye Tribbett are set to perform while John Legend, Tyra Banks, Terry Crews, Anderson.Paak and Lakeith Stanfield will present, alongside appearances by Questlove, Wale, Markelle Fultz and Black Thought at the iconic annual show.

It was a night of highs and lows at the  17th annual BET Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 25, 2017. Beyoncé won five prizes, and she was the ceremony’s top nominee (with seven nominations), but she did not attend, because she reportedly gave birth to twins on June 12. 2017. The show had its share of glitches: host Leslie Jones was left to adlib on stage more than once while technical difficulties had to be fixed. There were also awkward moments when nothing was happening on stage, which was a clear sign that things were not running smoothly behind the scenes. The ceremony ran over 45 minutes after its scheduled end time, and the live broadcast was cut off on BET at 11 p.m. Eastern Time to run the previously scheduled stand-up comedy series “Kevin Hart Presents: The Next Level. ” However, the remainder of the live broadcast could be seen on BET sister networks MTV, VH1 and Centric.

However, the show had some memorable highlights, most notably performances from Bruno Mars, New Edition (recipient of this year’s BET Lifetime Achievement Award) and a reunited Xscape.

Presenters included Yara Shahidi, Cardi B, Issa Rae, Jamie Foxx, La La Anthony, Girls Trip cast members (Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah), Robin Thede,Trevor Noah, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Logan Browning, Cari Champion, Deon Cole  , Remy Ma, Irv Gotti, “Detroit” cast members (Algee Smith, Jason Mitchell, Laz Alonso and Jacob Latimore), and DeRay Davis.

June 6, 2017

2017 BET Awards

The following is a press release from BET:

BET Networks revealed iconic R&B group New Edition will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 “BET Awards”. In addition, multi–Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist and singer-songwriter Chance the Rapper will receive the evening’s Humanitarian Award presented by Walmart. This year’s broadcast marks 17 years of unexpected performances, trailblazing moments, super dope talent, and entertainment’s most provocative players. The iconic show continues to be a cultural rule breaker steeped in reinvention with some of the most memorable moments in Award show history. The “BET Awards” has set the standard for one of the most intently unconventional, news-provoking broadcasts. The 2017 “BET Awards” will air LIVE on Sunday, June 25 at 8 pm ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CA on BET.

New Edition is a legendary R&B group consisting of members Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill. Throughout the course of their extensive musical career, New Edition released several chart-topping hits including “Candy Girl”, “Cool It Now”, and “Mr. Telephone Man” – for which they received multiple Soul Train Awards and American Music Award wins. In January 2017, BET launched The New Edition Story, a three-part miniseries that was also BET’s first scripted music-focused program. The show profiled the New Edition journey from the little-known boy band from the Orchard Park Projects of Roxbury, Massachusetts, to one of the most successful adult acts ever in the music industry. To date, New Edition has sold over 20 million records world-wide.

Chance the Rapper is a hip-hop artist, singer-songwriter and philanthropist who rose to popularity with his highly awarded and recognized mixtapes “Acid Rap” and “Coloring Book.” Chance has consistently used his musical platform to support a number of impactful educational, social and political initiatives – positively impacting both local and national communities. In 2016, Chance worked closely with President Obama on My Brother’s Keeper Challenge, an initiative of the United States Federal Government to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color – working to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice. Chance has also activity fought gun violence, leading social campaigns in his home-town Chicago. Most recently, Chance the Rapper pledged to donate $1 million to in-need Chicago Public Schools in an effort to offset the lack of government funding provided to the area.

Hosted by Leslie Jones, the “BET Awards” 2017 will include performances by Bruno Mars, Future, Migos, Trey Songz and Tamar Braxton. The start power continues as Yara Shahidi, Cardi B, Issa Rae, Jamie Foxx, La La Anthony, the cast of Universal Pictures’ “Girls Trip” (Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, with Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah), Trevor Noah, Robin Thede, Cari Champion and Demetrius Shipp Jr. and many others will take the stage as presenters during the 17th anniversary of the annual highly-anticipated televised event.
