2018 Hollywood Film Awards: ‘Believer’ gets documentary prize; Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds will perform on show

Dick Clark Productions announced today that the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards will bestow the Hollywood Documentary Award to Live Nation Productions’ “Believer,” the story of Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds as he comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation.  Reynolds, who also served as Executive Producer on the film, will be accepting the award at the ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton. As part of the ceremony, Reynolds, producer Tim Edgar and award-winning composer Hans Zimmer will also take the HFA stage to deliver a performance of “Believer’s” empowering track “Skipping Stones.” The song is one of two original tracks that are featured in the documentary.  Reynolds teamed up with the film-score legend for this heartfelt track to promote change, love and acceptance of the LGBTQ community within the Mormon Church.

They join previously announced honorees Nicole Kidman, who will receive this year’s Hollywood Career Achievement Award; Glenn Close, who will receive the Hollywood Actress Award; Hugh Jackman, who will receive the Hollywood Actor Award; Damien Chazelle, who will receive the Hollywood Director Award; Timothée Chalamet and Rachel Weisz, who will receive the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award and Hollywood Supporting Actress Award, respectively; “Crazy Rich Asians,” which will receive the “Hollywood Breakout Ensemble Award,” Amandla Stenberg, who will receive the Hollywood Breakout Performance Actress Award; John David Washington, who will receive the Hollywood Breakout Performance Actor Award; Felix Van Groeningen, who will receive the Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award; and Yalitza Aparicio, who will receive the New Hollywood Award.

The Hollywood Film Awards, honoring the most acclaimed films and actors while previewing highly anticipated films and talent for the upcoming year, also acknowledges artists in the categories of Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Composing, Costume Design, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Makeup & Hairstyling. In its 22-year history, more than 320 of the world’s biggest stars and filmmakers have been highlighted at the Hollywood Film Awards and more than 130 of the honorees have gone on to garner Oscar nominations and/or wins.

ABOUT THE HONOREES
“Believer” is a film based on Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds who comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation. Since 2008, teen suicide rates in Utah have skyrocketed, which many people attribute to the Mormon church’s official stance regarding same-sex relationships. Director Don Argott follows Dan and openly gay former Mormon Tyler Glenn, lead singer of Neon Trees, as they decide to create LoveLoud, a music and spoken-word festival designed to spark dialogue between the church and members of the LGBTQ community.

Dan Reynolds, a third generation Las Vegas native, is lead singer for the Grammy winning band Imagine Dragons. Born to a family of nine children, Dan grew up writing and recording music before beginning his studies at Brigham Young University and later UNLV. Dan left his schooling to form Imagine Dragons, which had its start making ends meet playing casinos and bars in Las Vegas before signing to KidinaKorner/Interscope Records. The band has since sold over 12 million albums and 35 million singles worldwide. In 2016, Dan formed Interscope imprint Night Street Records, whose first signing K.Flay was nominated for two 2018 Grammy Awards.  Having publicly expressed his concern for the rising suicide rate in LGBTQ+ youth, Dan founded the LOVELOUD Foundation in 2017 to bring awareness to the growing crisis. Its mission is to bring communities together by igniting the vital conversation of what it means to unconditionally love, understand, accept, and support our LGBTQ+ family and friends. Dan also currently serves as a board member for The Tyler Robinson Foundation, a charity he co-founded which helps support pediatric cancer families in financial distress.

2018 Hollywood Film Awards: ‘Green Book’ stars, screenwriters among honorees

Dick Clark Productions announced today that Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures’ Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly and starring Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali and Linda Cardellini, will receive both the “Hollywood Ensemble Award” and “Hollywood Screenwriter Award” at the 22nd Annual “Hollywood Film Awards,” which will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton. The TIFF 2018 People’s Choice Award winner is written by Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga and Brian Currie and is inspired by a true friendship that in 1962 transcended race, class and the Mason-Dixon line.

ABOUT THE HONOREES
Academy Award® nominee Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises, The Lord of the Ringstrilogy) and Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) star in Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures’ Green Book.  In his foray into powerfully dramatic work as a feature director, Peter Farrelly helms the film inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans.  Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. Jim Burke (The Descendants), Charles B. Wessler (The Heartbreak Kid) produce alongside Farrelly’s fellow writers, Brian Currie and Nick Vallelonga, and Farrelly.  The drama is executive produced by Participant’s Jeff Skoll (The Help) and Jonathan King (Lincoln), along with Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) and Kwame L. Peter Farrelly (Produced by/Written by/Directed by) is a director, producer, executive producer, screenwriter and published novelist widely known for the star-driven comedy blockbuster movies he made with his brother Bob such as There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin, Shallow Hall, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch and the modern-day classic Dumb and Dumber. Most recently, the television series Loudermilk, which Farrelly created and executive produced, was renewed for a second season by AT&T’s Audience Network.  Loudermilk, which stars Tyler Layton-Olson and Ron Livingston in the titular role, focuses on a recovering alcoholic and substance abuse counselor whose bad attitude is said to “put the SOB in sobriety.” Following the box-office success of their first film Dumb and Dumber, the writing, producing and directing duo known collectively as the Farrelly brothers collaborated on nearly 20 films and television projects, including The Ringer; Me, Myself & Irene; Osmosis Jones; Hall Pass; The Three Stooges; Dumb and Dumber To; The Leisure Class; and the 2007 remake of The Heartbreak Kid.

Nick Vallelonga (Produced by/Written by) is an actor and filmmaker with nearly 50 films and television projects to his credit.  The Bronx-born son of Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga, he also plays the role of Mob Boss Augie in Green Book.  Other recent credits include producing and directing the television pilot Unorganized Crime, which starred Chazz Palminteri and for which Vallelonga won Best Director at the Hollywood International Film Festival.  He executive produced the action thriller I Am Wrath, which starred John Travolta, will next be seen alongside Travolta and Morgan Freeman in George Gallo’s upcoming The Poison Rose.  He produced the action/comedy Vigilante Diaries for HBO and the feature film Chocolate City, which starred Vivica A. Fox and Michael Jai White. Vallelonga’s other film and television credits include Deadfall, Coyote Ugly, Rake, Aquarius, See Dad Run, The Others, New Jersey Shore Shark Attack, Summoned, ERand Chicago Hope. Vallelonga went on to produce and direct several independent films including Stiletto, which starred Tom Berenger, Stana Katic, William Forsythe and Diane Venora; All In, which starred Louis Gossett Jr. and Michael Madsen; Deadfall, which starred Nicolas Cage, James Coburn, Charlie Sheen and Michael Biehn; In the Kingdom of the Blind, the Man with One Eye Is King, which starred William Petersen, Paul Winfield, Leo Rossi and Michael Biehn; and the award-winning western Yellow Rock,  which starred Michael Biehn and James Russo. Vallelonga took Best Director honors for Yellow Rock at the 2011 Red Nation Film Festival and the 2012 Western Heritage Awards, and the film was awarded a Western Heritage Award for Theatrical Motion Picture. Under his Vallelonga Productions banner, he has several projects in development, including the romantic comedies That’s Amore! and Men at Sea, the action films 10 Double Zero and Brute Force, and action/horror films Two Thieves and King of Vampires.  He is also adapting “The Court Martial of Daniel Boone,” “The Jimmy Roselli Story” and the bestselling faith based “The Reunion” into screenplays.

Boston-born Brian Currie (Produced by/Written by) became interested in screenwriting at an early age, first while attending St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts and later at Middlebury College in Vermont.  He’s had the good fortune of writing on major studio movies and independent films over the course of his career.  Currie enjoyed acting while studying at Emerson College in Boston, and his credits include Con Air; McFarland, USA; Stuck on You; The Bold and the Beautiful; Invincible; Fever Pitch; and Armageddon.  In addition to his co-writing and producing on Green Book, Currie also plays Maryland State Trooper Hayes in a memorable sequence in the film.

ABOUT THE HONOREES
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Glenn Close made her feature film debut in George Roy Hill’s The World According to Garp, earning her awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review as well as her first Academy Award nomination. She was subsequently Oscar-nominated for “The Big Chill,” “The Natural,” “Fatal Attraction” and Stephen Frears’ “Dangerous Liaisons” (for which she was also a BAFTA Award nominee). Close stars in the title role of Jane Anderson’s film adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s bestselling novel “The Wife,” with Jonathan Pryce and Christian Slater for Swedish director Björn Runge, which opened earlier this year. Close also stars in the title role of Jane Anderson’s stage play “Mother of the Maid,” which just premiered in New York at the Public Theater.  Close received her sixth Academy Award nomination in 2012, along with Golden Globe and SAG nominations, for “Albert Nobbs,” having co-written the screenplay with man Booker Prize-winning author, John Banville. Close was also a producer on the film and composed the lyrics for the Golden Globe and World Soundtrack- nominated song, “Lay Your Head Down.” Glenn Close made her theatre, and Broadway, debut in Harold Prince’s revival of “Love for Love.” Her theater credits include “The Crucifer of Blood,” “The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs” (Obie Award), Barnum (Tony nomination) and Tony Awards for her performances in “The Real Thing” and “Death and the Maiden,” both directed by Mike Nichols, and for her performance in the highly-anticipated revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Sunset Boulevard.” Starting in 2007, Close headlined the critically acclaimed legal thriller “Damages” for five seasons. For her riveting portrayal of high-stakes litigator Patty Hewes, Close won two consecutive Emmys as Best Actress in a Drama Series and two subsequent Emmy nominations, along with a Golden Globe Award and three SAG Award nominations. Close’s twelve Golden Globe nominations include a Best Actress win for Andrei Konchalovsky’s adaptation of “The Lion in Winter” (which also earned her a SAG Award). Among the television projects that have brought her twelve Emmy nominations, is an Emmy Award for her performance as Margarethe Cammermeyer in “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” (for which she also received a Peabody Award as executive producer). In 2009, Close co-founded the charity Bring Change To Mind, whose mission is to confront the stigma and misunderstanding around mental illness by “starting the conversation.” The idea for the organization came about following Close’s first-hand observation of battles with mental illness within her family.

Hugh Jackman can currently be seen in the Jason Reitman-directed feature film “The Front Runner.” Based on the true story of American Senator Gary Hart’s tumultuous political run for the office of President of the United States in 1988. Jackman is a multi-award-winning actor on stage and screen. He was last seen as P.T. Barnum in the worldwide phenomenon “The Greatest Showman.” He is a co-founder of Laughing Man Coffee and a worldwide Ambassador for Global Citizen, among other philanthropic efforts.

Academy Award® winner Damien Chazelle most recently wrote and directed the musical “La La Land,” which earned fourteen Oscar nominations, winning six awards, including Best Director for Chazelle, who is the youngest director to receive the award.  The film also won a record-breaking seven Golden Globes, and was also honored with five BAFTA wins and eleven nominations. His previous film, 2014’s “Whiplash,” received five Academy Award nominations and three wins, including Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons. His 2013 short, based on the “Whiplash” screenplay, won the Short Film Jury Prize at Sundance, and the following year the feature film took home both the Jury and Audience Awards from the festival. Chazelle made his first feature, “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” as an undergraduate student at Harvard University. The film was named one of the Best Films of the Year by The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, LA Weekly, The Village Voice, and others. Upcoming in TV, Chazelle has a musical drama
“The Eddy” for Netflix, and a straight-to-series order for a drama series for Apple which he will direct and executive produce.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is a contemporary romantic comedy based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan and featuring an all-Asian starring ensemble, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Sonoya Mizuno, Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Amandla Stenberg can currently be seen in 20th Century Fox’s highly anticipated film “The Hate U Give,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 to rave reviews.  Additionally, she can currently be seen in Amma Asante’s WWII drama “Where Hands Touch,” which also premiered at TIFF.  Amandla’s other recent film credits include “The Darkest Minds,” “Everything, Everything” and “As You Are,” which won the Special Jury Award at Sundance 2016, “Colombiana,” “Rio 2” and “The Hunger Games.” She has been recognized globally for her crusade towards sparking thoughtful conversation using social media as a platform to spread awareness and knowledge on topics such as cultural appropriation, intersectional feminism, mindfulness, biracial identity, sexual identity, gender and beauty standards to name few.  Amandla has been recognized with Teen Choice Awards, a BET Award and NAACP Image Award for her work.

John David Washington garnered critical acclaim for starring in “BlacKkKlansman,” directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jason Blum and Jordan Peele. The film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to a standing ovation and won the Grand Prix. This fall he co-starred in “Monsters and Men” directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. The script was selected and developed as part of the 2017 Sundance Directors Lab. Earlier this year, he was seen in “Monster,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, starring opposite Jeffrey Wright, ASAP Rocky and Jennifer Hudson. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Washington got his start as a child in Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” in 1992. Prior to acting, he spent six years playing professional football. Shortly after, he booked his fist-ever audition to play Ricky Jerret in the HBO series “Ballers” with Dwayne Johnson. His performance as Ricky has generated rave reviews with the show currently in its 4th season and it was recently announced that the show will be renewed by HBO for a 5th season.

Yalitza Aparicio was born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca in 1993. She holds a degree in education and aspires to become a teacher upon completion of her exams, but also has additional opportunities ahead of her since the film “Roma” has been completed. Aparicio went to her local community center to accompany her sister to the casting call and ended up trying out and being selected. She is very close with another actress from “Roma,” Nancy García, who lives in a nearby town in Oaxaca. Aparicio also developed strong relationships with the child actors that formed her family on set. Aparicio took advantage of working in Mexico City and visited Chapultepec Park and the pyramids of Teotihuacán. She loved being on set and seeing how spaces were transformed. She also enjoyed working with Cuarón and building the relationship of trust they came to share.

Felix Van Groeningen is a Flemish director, screenwriter and producer. This is his first English-language film. His previous film, “Belgica,” premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where he won the Directing Award (Dramatic World Cinema). Van Groeningen’s internationally acclaimed breakthrough “The Broken Circle Breakdown” earned a 2014 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and a César for Best Foreign Film. Previously, “The Misfortunates” premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. Van Groeningen is a graduate of Belgium’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He currently resides in Antwerp, Belgium.

2018 Hollywood Film Awards: Nicole Kidman, Timothée Chalamet, Rachel Weisz among honorees

Dick Clark Productions announced that Nicole Kidman, a multi-award-winning actress known for her fearlessness and intelligence, will receive the Hollywood Career Achievement Award at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards.  Her selection for this award is a tribute to the versatility of her performances over the years, with characters as diverse and extraordinary as an aspiring television personality with a dark motive in Gus Van Zant’s “To Die For” to the iconic and complicated Virginia Woolf in “The Hours”; from a wife who, with her husband, embarks on an odyssey of sexual and moral discovery in Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” to Satine, the singing and dancing courtesan in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!”; and from the unguarded adoptive mother of an orphan boy longing to help others in need in Garth Davis’ “Lion” to a woman on the run who pays a huge price to be hidden in Lars von Triers’ controversial and thrilling “Dogville.” With three films coming out before the end of this year, Kidman has already received praise for her transformative performance in Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer” and in Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased.”

In addition, critically acclaimed actors Timothée Chalamet and Rachel Weisz will receive the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award and Hollywood Supporting Actress Award, respectively, at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards.  Chalamet will be honored for his exquisite work in Amazon Studio’s “Beautiful Boy,” while Weisz will be recognized for her role in Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite,” a festival breakout.  The 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton.

The Hollywood Film Awards, honoring the most acclaimed films and actors while previewing highly anticipated films and talent for the upcoming year, also acknowledges artists in the categories of Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Composing, Costume Design, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Makeup & Hairstyling. In its 22-year history, more than 320 of the world’s biggest stars and filmmakers have been highlighted at the Hollywood Film Awards and more than 130 of the honorees have gone on to garner Oscar nominations and/or wins.

ABOUT THE HONOREES

Nicole Kidman – Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman first came to the attention of American audiences with her critically acclaimed performance in Phillip Noyce’s riveting Australian psychological thriller “Dead Calm.” Kidman has since become an internationally recognized actress known for her range, versatility and dedication to her craft.

In 2002, Kidman was honored with her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Baz Luhrmann’s innovative musical “Moulin Rouge!” For that role, and her performance in writer/director Alejandro Amenabar’s psychological thriller “The Others,” she received dual 2002 Golden Globe nominations, winning for Best Actress in a Musical. The following year, Kidman won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and a Berlin Silver Bear for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours.” She has since been nominated for a total of four Academy Awards – winning one – 12 Golden Globes – winning four.

This fall, Kidman can be seen starring in Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased,” opposite Lucas Hedges and Russell Crowe, and James Wan’s “Aquaman.” Most recently, Kidman gave an award-winning performance and produced the HBO limited series “Big Little Lies,” for which she received an Emmy Award, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award. With their “Big Little Lies” co-producers Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, Blossom Films is also adapting Liane Moriarty’s novel “Truly Madly Guilty” into a limited series. Kidman will also produce and star in Moriarty’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” to which Blossom Films and Papandrea’s Made Up Stories acquired the rights for a film or TV series. Blossom’s next project is David E. Kelley’s limited series “The Undoing,” which will go into production in 2019 and star Kidman.

Kidman had four projects debut at Cannes Film Festival last year – Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake: China Girl, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” and John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” She will next be seen in “The Upside” and “The Goldfinch,” a movie adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Timothée Chalamet has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Nic Sheff in “Beautiful Boy,” directed Felix Van Groeningen in select theaters this month.  “Beautiful Boy,” based on the memoirs “Beautiful Boy”  by David Sheff and “Tweak” by his son Nic Sheff, chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring story of survival and recovery in a family coping with addition. Chalamet is currently filming “Little Women” with director Greta Gerwig, and this spring will star in “Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve. Chalamet recently wrapped production on “The King” which will be released in 2019.

Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz will next star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” alongside Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Nicholas Hoult. The film premiered to rave reviews at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival and New York Film Festival and will be released by Fox Searchlight on November 23, 2018. She recently produced and starred in Sebastián Lelio’s “Disobedience,” alongside Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola. The film, which is based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews, was released by Bleecker Street in April, and releases in the UK on November 30.

2019 Golden Globe Awards: ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ will be in Drama categories, not Musical or Comedy

In a move that comes as a big surprise to awards observers, the music-oriented films “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” will not be submitted for consideration in the Musical or Comedy categories at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, and will instead be submitted in the Drama categories, according to IndieWire. The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 6, 2019. Movies eligible for the awards are those released in  U.S. theaters for at least one week in 2018. The nominations will be announced on December 6, 2018.

Warner Bros Pictures’ 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” directed by Bradley Cooper, stars Cooper and Lady Gaga as two singers who have an ill-fated romance.  Cooper and Lady Gaga do their own singing in the movie, and were among the co-writers of the movie’s original songs. “A Star Is Born” was released on October 5, 2018.

20th Century Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” directed by Bryan Singer, is the official biopic of the British rock band Queen, and features original, previously released songs from the band in the soundtrack. The “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie has different release dates, depending on the country. In the United States, the movie’s release date is November 2, 2018, while the United Kingdom has the first release of the film on Oct. 24, 2018. Rami Malek, who plays Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” has some of his vocals dubbed over Queen’s original songs in some of the live-performance scenes, but the movie’s songs feature Mercury’s lead vocals, for the most part. Mercury died of AIDS in 1991.

Several past music-oriented dramas have been nominated for or won Golden Globes in the musical or comedy categories, even when the movie did not have the traditional musical format of characters singing lines of their dialogues. They include 2004’s “Ray” (the Ray Charles biopic starring Jamie Foxx), 2005’s “Walk the Line” (the Johnny Cash biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon) and 2010’s “Burlesque” (the burlesque-dance feature film starring Christina Aguilera and Cher).

Between “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the movie getting more awards buzz is “A Star Is Born.” Even with “A Star Is Born” competing in the Drama field at the Golden Globes, it’s still likely to get a Best Picture nomination. Cooper is one of the producers of the 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” and he co-wrote the movie’s screenplay. Meanwhile, Cooper and Lady Gaga are expected to get nods for, respectively, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. “A Star Is Born” will almost certainly be a top contender for Best Original Song, with “Shallow” and/or “I’ll Never Love Again” the two most likely songs to be nominated from the movie. Cooper made his directorial debut with “A Star Is Born,” and a Best Director nomination is possible for him.

Meanwhile, the most awards buzz that “Bohemian Rhapsody” is getting is for a Best Actor nomination for Malek. Since “Bohemian Rhapsody” doesn’t have any original songs written for the movie, it’s ineligible for the Best Original Song category.

In the Golden Globes field of Musical or Comedy, Cooper and Lady Gaga were considered the most likely to win Best Actor and Best Actress, while “A Star Is Born” was considered a clear frontrunner to win Best Picture.  But now that they won’t be competing in the Musical or Comedy field, they face stiffer competition in the Drama field. In the category of Best Motion Picture – Drama, “A Star Is Born” will likely be competing against “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Cannes Film Festival award-winner “BlacKkKlansman, which is being hailed as director Spike Lee’s best film in years. “Roma,” which has been winning awards at film festivals, is a Spanish-language film that is ineligible for this Golden Globes category because Netflix is reportedly submitting the movie in the category of Best Foreign-Language Film, where “Roma” would be the clear frontrunner. Golden Globe rules prevent a movie to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign-Language Film.

In the race for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, Cooper could be up against Malek of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Willem Dafoe of “At Eternity’s Gate.” “Vice,” which appears to be a dark comedy, could be submitted in the Musical or Comedy field, which means that Christian Bale (who stars in the movie as Dick Cheney) could be a contender for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy instead of competing against his former “American Hustle” co-star Cooper for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. Lady Gaga’s competition in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama could be Glenn Close of “The Wife” and Nicole Kidman of “Destroyer.” Oscar-winning directors Alfonso Cuarón of “Roma” and Damien Chazelle of “First Man” are considered early frontrunners for the Best Director category. Cooper is also likely to get nominated for Best Director, but he is unlikely to win for the first movie he directed.

As for which movies could get multiple nominations in the Musical or Comedy field, early predictions are that “The Favourite” and “Mary Poppins Returns” are the frontrunners, with Olivia Colman of “The Favourite” and Emily Blunt of “Mary Poppins Returns” most likely to be among the contenders for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The critically acclaimed hit romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” could also be nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, although it faces stiff competition from “The Favourite,” which has been winning awards at film festivals, and “Mary Poppins Returns,” which has an A-list cast and Disney’s track record of award-winning musicals.

It should be noted that although “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” will be submitted in the Drama field, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the group behind the Golden Globe Awards) can still vote to put those films in the Musical or Comedy field. We’ll find out what happens when the nominations are announced.

The Oscar Nominees Luncheon  for nominees of the 90th Annual Academy Awards took place on February 5, 2018, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.  Hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this annual luncheon has changed slightly over the past few years. In more recent years, several of the  nominated actors and actresses have not attended the ceremony.  There could be several reasons for these notable absences (for example, scheduling conflicts), but it seems the main reason could be avoiding the media or not wanting to campaign for the awards.

In 2018, several high–profile Oscar nominees chose not to attend the luncheon, including actors and actresses Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”), Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Woody Harrelson (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Daniel  Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”), Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Christopher Plummer (“All the Money in the World”) . McDormand and Day-Lewis famously do not campaign for awards, so it’s not too surprising that they were not there. In the behind-the-scenes categories, some notable no-shows included screenwriter/producer Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), cinematographer Roger Deakins (“Blade Runner 2049”), screenwriter James Ivory (“Call Me by Your Name”), songwriter Sufjan Stevens (“Call Me By Your Name”), composer Hans Zimmer (“Dunkirk”), composer Jonny Greenwood (“Phantom Thread”) and composer John Williams (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”).

The Oscar Nominees Luncheon used to have short press conferences for each of the nominees in the biggest categories. Over the years, due to the rise in celebrity tabloid coverage, the questions at these press conferences were getting increasingly vapid and annoying. Each press conference for each nominee would be about five to eight minutes long, so there would be time to only answer only two to five questions .

The female actor nominees would almost inevitably be asked questions that their male counterparts were never asked, such as if they had their Oscar outfit picked out yet, what’s their beauty routine for awards shows, or how they might balance parenthood and a career. You could see the frustration on many of these actresses’ faces in being asked these borderline sexist questions instead of being asked about the movie that got them their Oscar nomination or anything to do with the art of acting, which are the kinds of questions male actors typically get asked at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon. Eventually, less actors and actresses were attending these press conferences. And in 2017, the Oscar Nominees Luncheon stopped having these press conferences. (The nominees can still do one-on-one interviews and pose for photos at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon.)

2018 Golden Globe Awards: ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,’ ‘Big Little Lies’ are the top winners

With four awards each, the darkly humorous drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and the limited TV series “Big Little Lies” were the big winners at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 7, 2017. “Three Billboards” and “Big Little Lies” both examine violence and abuse in society, as well as how victims fight back. So it’s perhaps not a coincidence that this year’s Golden Globes will also be remembered as the year that attendees took  a very loud and visible stand against sexism, sexual harassment and abuse. Almost all the celebrities wore black in a show of support for Time’s Up, a new coalition aimed at fighting and preventing sexism, sexual harassment and abuse worldwide. Many of the attendees also worn a Time’s Up pin in support of the cause. And speaking out against sexism, harassment and abuse was at heart of speeches by several celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey (recipient of the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. deMille Award), Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Elisabeth Moss and Frances McDormand.

The 2018 Golden Globe Awards ceremony (which was telecast in the U.S. on NBC) was the first major televised award show for the entertainment industry since the wave of sexual harassment scandals that hit the industry in late 2017. Seth Meyers, who hosted the show, predictably made insulting jokes about Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, two former Hollywood heavyweights who were among those who had epic falls from grace because of sexual misconduct accusations made against them.

The Golden Globe Awards are presented and voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Dick Clark Productions (DCP) produces the telecast.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” won Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama; Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (for McDormand); Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (for Sam Rockwell) and Best Screenplay (for writer/director Martin McDonaugh). “The Shape of Water” went into the award show with the most nominations (seven) and ended up winning two: Best Director (for Guillermo del Toro) and Best Original Score (for Alexandre Desplat). “Lady Bird”  also won two awards: Best Motion Picture  – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (for Saoirse Ronan).

In the TV categories, many of the winners were those who also won Emmys in September 2017, such as “Big Little Lies” and the series’ cast members Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård; “The Handmaid’s Tale” and its lead actress Elisabeth Moss; Sterling K. Brown from “This Is Us”; and “Master of None” creator Aziz Ansari, who won an Emmy for writing and a Golden Globe for starring in the series. Meanwhile, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and the show’s star Rachel Brosnahan won Golden Globes on their first nominations.

Acclaimed actress, producer, television star and entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey will be honored with the 2018 Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 7, 2018, hosted by Seth Meyers. With seven nominations, “The Shape of Water” is the leading contender overall and in the movie categories for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which is set to take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 7, 2018. NBC will have the U.S. telecast of the show, which will be hosted by Seth Meyers. The HBO limited series “Big Little Lies” received the most Golden Globe nominations (six) in the TV categories.

The Golden Globe Awards are presented and voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Dick Clark Productions (DCP) produces the telecast.

The nominations for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton on December 11, 2017 by actors Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell and Sharon Stone,  with HFPA president, Meher Tatna and DCP executive vice president of television Barry Adelman. Eligible movies are those with theatrical releases of at least one week in the U.S. in 2017. Eligible TV shows are those that premiered new episodes in the U.S. in 2017.

NBC will televise “Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special” at 9 p.m. ET/PT  on December 13, 2017. “Will & Grace” stars Eric McCormack and Debra Messing are hosts of the show.

Predicted Contenders

“The Shape of Water” is also the top nominee at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards, and the American Film Institute has named “The Shape of Water” among the 10 best films of 2017.  Almost all of the films nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes have also received similar nominations at other award shows so far. They include “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “The Post,” “Lady Bird” and “I, Tonya.”

In the TV categories, several shows that made the Golden Globes nominations list in addition to the Emmy-winning “Big Little Lies” have also been nominated or won at the 2017 Emmys, including “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “This Is Us,” “Stranger Things,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “Fargo,” “The Wizard of Lies” and “The Crown.” (“Game of Thrones” was not eligible for the Emmys this year.)

Movie Snubs and Surprises

Noticeable movie snubs include “The Big Sick,” which has been getting a lot of nominations at other award shows that honor movies. However, “The Big Sick” failed to get any Golden Globe nominations. Jordan Peele has been racking up nominations at several other award shows for writing and directing the critically acclaimed hit “Get Out,” but he was left out of the Golden Globes race for writing and directing. However, as one of the producers of “Get Out,” Peele did get a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture. Curiously, even though “Get Out” is a thriller/horror movie, the Golden Globe Awards put it in the category of comedy or musical, where “Get Out” did manage to get two Golden Globe nominations: for Best Motion Picture and for Best Actor.

Superhero and sci-fi movies have a tough time getting nominations outside of technical/production categories (such as visual effects, production design, editing and cinematography), so it’s not too surprising that “Wonder Woman,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Logan” were shut out of the Golden Globes, even though these movies were critically acclaimed hits. It’s unknown if enough Golden Globe voters saw “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in time to vote for it, and “Blade Runner 2049” got too many mixed and disappointed reactions from critics and audiences to be a serious Golden Globes contender.

Two films that have been embraced by the Golden Globes but snubbed at other movie-related ceremonies so far are the musical “The Greatest Showman” and the kidnapping drama “All the Money in the World,” which received three nominations each. “All the Money in the World” was abruptly re-shot and re-edited in November 2017, one month before its release, to remove co-star Kevin Spacey after his sexual misconduct scandal made him a Hollywood pariah. Spacey was replaced in the film by Christopher Plummer, who received a Golden Globe nod for the film, as did the movie’s lead actress Michelle Williams and director Ridley Scott.

Meanwhile, the Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs feature film “Battle of the Sexes” has been virtually ignored by most award shows so far, but managed to get two Golden Globe nods for stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell. Although “Battle of the Sexes” is really a drama, the Golden Globes have it in the category of musical or comedy. This misplacement of dramatic, non-musical movies in the musical or comedy category is something that seems to happen every year with the Golden Globes, and it’s one of the biggest criticisms that the show gets.

TV Snubs and Surprises

In the TV categories, the Golden Globe voters show that they have very different tastes from Emmy voters when it comes to comedies. “Veep,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Modern Family,” which consistently get Emmy nominations and/or wins, failed to receive any Golden Globe nominations this time around. (“Atlanta,” which has won Golden Globes and Emmys, was not eligible for any Golden Globes this year because the show did not air any new episodes in 2017.)

Former Golden Globe favorites “Orange Is the New Black,” “House of Cards” and “Transparent” were completely snubbed. “House of Cards,” which starred Spacey until he was fired from the show in October 2017, was no doubt tainted by his sex scandal. “Transparent” also seems to have met a similar fate: the show’s star Jeffrey Tambor quit “Transparent” in November 2017, after he was accused of sexually harassing two of his “Transparent” co-workers. Tambor has denied the allegations. Spacey has apologized for one allegation against him made  by actor Anthony Rapp, but Spacey has not publicly commented on numerous other allegations against him. “House of Cards,” which already announced that its sixth season premiering in 2018 will be the show’s last season, has since announced that Spacey will not be replaced, and Robin Wright will take the lead role in the cast. “Transparent” will also continue without Tambor, but the show has not yet announced any details about future storylines or other changes to the cast.

The Golden Globes embrace TV newcomers, and many of the TV nominees in the comedy categories are newbies such as “SMILF” (two nominations), “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (two nominations), as well as “The Good Doctor,” “GLOW,” “The Deuce” and “I Love Dick,” which received one nomination each. However, there’s a big difference between new, original shows and “new-ish” shows that are reboots or remakes. Of the many TV series that were rebooted or remade this year, only two received Golden Globe nominations: “Will & Grace” (two nods) and “Twin Peaks” (one nod), which is a clear indication that Golden Globe voters are not enamored with most new versions of old TV shows. In addition, TV shows that are based on movies got completely snubbed.

Sexual Harassment Fallout

As previously mentioned, sexual misconduct scandals seem to have had an effect on Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Amazon’s “Transparent” being snubbed by the Golden Globes this year. Several other actors who have in recent months been hit with sexual misconduct allegations include Jeremy Piven, Ed Westwick, Danny Masterson and Dustin Hoffman. None of them was expected to get any Golden Globe nominations this year, although Hoffman campaigned for his role in the Netflix movie “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).”

Louis C.K.’s sexual misconduct scandal in November 2017 and his admission that all the allegations against him are true have virtually ensured that he won’t be nominated for any major awards for the foreseable future. His FX comedy series “Louie,” which has been on hiatus since 2015, was cancelled after the scandal hit, and the show would have been ineligible for any awards this year anyway. Louis C.K. was an executive producer of FX’s “Better Things” until the network fired him from the show, but “Better Things” star/executive producer Pamela Adlon received a Golden Globe nod despite the scandal.

The Weinstein Company, which ousted co-founder Harvey Weinstein in October 2017, was not surprisingly shut out of the Golden Globes race this year, although the company didn’t have any really serious awards contenders for the first time in years. The closest to being an awards contender was the crime thriller “Wind River,” but award-show buzz for the movie had already faded before the Weinstein scandal hit.

However a sexual misconduct scandal seems to have had no negative effect on the award-show chances for Pixar Animation Studios, which placed chief creative officer John Lasseter on leave for sexual misconduct in November 2017. Pixar still got Golden Globe nominations for “Coco,” which is already being touted as the Oscar frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature.

“Genius” star Geoffrey Rush, nominated for a Golden Globe in the limited series, has been accused of sexual harassment, but he has vehemently denied the allegations, which were published in November 2017 by Sydney-based newspaper the Daily Telegraph. Rush is now suing the Daily Telegraph for libel.

Amazon Studios, which ousted chief Roy Price in November, had mixed results at the Golden Globes this year, by receiving three nominations, but only in the TV categories: two nods for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and one nomination for “I Love Dick.” Amazon’s movies released in 2017 were completely snubbed by the Golden Globes, most notably “The Big Sick,” which is Amazon’s 2017 movie that is most likely to be nominated at any major award show that honors movies.
