Culture Clash: Denji (also known as Chainsaw Man) falls hard for a recent girlfriend, who is not all she appears to be.
Culture Audience: “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” will appeal primarily to people who are fans of the anime series and manga series on which the movie is based, as well as anime films about complicated superheroes.

“Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” is a thrilling continuation of the superhero “Chainsaw Man” anime series. The movie has spectacular action sequences, good comedic touches and heartfelt drama. However, people unfamiliar with the series might feel lost. The 2020 “Chainsaw Man” anime series (which had 12 episodes) was based on the “Chainsaw Man” manga series written by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and written by Hiroshi Seko, “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” takes place in Tokyo. The “Chainsaw Man” world is an alternate sci-fi/fantasy world where the main antagonists are devils that can take the form of other living beings. The devils have names like Chainsaw Devil, Gun Devil, Bat Devil, Zombie Devil, Ghost Devil, Typhoon Devil, Hell Devil, Justice Devil, Chicken Devil, Fire Devil, Eternity Devil, Darkness Devil, Aging Devil and Falling Devil. Chainsaw Devil is the most fearsome devil, who appeared in the form of a dog named Pochita, owned by teenage boy named Denji. When Denji was nearly killed by yakuza gangsters because of unpaid debt that Denji inherited from Denji’s deceased parents, Denji merged with Pochita/Chainsaw Devil to become Chainsaw Man.
Denji/Chainsaw Man is a member of the Public Safety Organization, a large government agency in Japan that has Public Safety Devil Hunters to protect Japan. The Public Safety Organization has special divisions, with Tokyo Special Division 4 being an “experimental division.” Denji has had a crush on Makima, the leader of the Public Safety Organization. Makima flirts with Denji, but she and Denji have not officially become boyfriend and girlfriend.
Also in this world are Fiends, who are Devils that have possessed human corpses as a way for dying Devils to survive. An ally of Denji is Power, a Public Safety Organization member who started off as a self-absorbed Blood Fiend and has since become kinder and generous to her friends. Power is Denji’s most consistent partners when they battle Devils. Aki Hayakawa is a Tokyo Special Divison 4 member who has been a frenemy to Denji. Aki has a vendetta agains Gun Devil for killing Aki’s family.
“Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” tells a story that combines whas was in the fifth and sixth volumes of the “Chainsaw Man” manga series but was not covered in the “Chainsaw Man” TV series. In the beginning of the movie, Makima assigns a new partner to Denji/Chainsaw Man because Power is temporarily away to get her blood changed. Denji’s new partner is Beam, a Shark Fiend, who is hyperactive, loyal and has the energy of a curious puppy.
Makima and Denji go to a movie marathon as on a platonic date. While watching an emotionally touching scene in a movie about a couple saying goodbye to each other, Makima and Denji both start to cry at this scene. After the movie, Denji asks Makima if she thinks he still has a heart, even though he is no longer fully human. Makima rests her head on Denji’s chest and says yes.
Denji’s complicated feelings about Makima get stirred up again, but soon he will meet a new love interest. During a rainstorm, he seeks shelter in a phone booth on a street. A teenager named Reze, who’s about the same age as Denji is nearby. He spontaneously gives her a small daisy as a gift. Reze is flattered by this gift and introduces herself and invites Denji to visit her anytime at the cafe where she works.
Within minutes, Denji is at the cafe. He is immediately smitten by Reze, who seems to be very attracted to him too. They hang out some more and go on romantic dates together. That’s about all that can be described about “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” without giving away too much information about the plot. People who know what’s in the entire “Chainsaw Man” manga series will already know what happens between Denji and Reze, but that information won’t be revealed in this movie review.
The voices of the “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” characters are portrayed by different actors, depending on the version of “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.” The original Japanese version (with English subtitles) has Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Reina Ueda as Reze, Fairouz Ai as Power, Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, and Shogo Sakata as Aki, Shiori Izawa as Pochita, and Natsuki Hanae as Beam. There’s also a U.S. version, with the dialogue dubbed in English, that has Ryan Colt Levy as Denji, Alexis Tipton as Reze, Sarah Wiedenheft as Power, Suzie Yeung as Makima, Reagan Murdock as Aki, Lindsay Seidel as Pochita, and Derick Snow as Beam.
“Chainsaw Man” has a way of blending Denji’s teenage angst with the bravado of his Chainsaw Man persona, which is why the “Chainsaw Man” franchise is very popular. Denji has some quirks that might be a little off-putting to some viewers (for example, he’s fixated on asking women he’s attracted to if he can consensually fondle their breasts), but there are no sex scenes in this movie, which is suitable for anyone who can tolerate seeing violent action scenes. The end-credits scene (which is interesting but not essential) is an example of how the movie mixes comedy with drama. The action scenes are the best parts of “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc,” which is an immersive and entertaining experience for viewers who already know the backstories of the main characters.
Sony Pictures Releasing released “Chainsaw Man” in select cinemas on October 24, 2025. The movie was released in Japan on September 19, 2025.

The 20th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 9 to October 12, 2025, in New York City. The pop culture event, which is produced by ReedPOP, has come a long way since it launched in 2006, and has overcome certain challenges in the past five years.
In 2023, New York Comic Con was affected by strikes by the the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America. The striking actors and actresses in attedance either did autograph or photo sessions, or they if they did panel/Q&A discussions, they had to limit the topics to things that didn’t promote work owned or produced by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers companies that they were striking against.
In 2022, New York Comic Con returned to being an in-person-only event, after being a hybrid event (where people could attend in person or virtually) in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con was cancelled as an in-person event in 2020, and instead presented as a scaled-down virtual-only event. Before the pandemic, New York Comic Con attracted about 250,000 people per year since 2017, according to ReedPOP. In 2024, about 200,000 people attended, according to ReedPOP.
In 2025, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. New York Comic Con will continue its exclusive lineup of programming for professionals (a feature that launched in 2024) that begins on Wednesday, October 8, before New York Comic Con officially opens to the public on Thursday, October 9. Programming for professionals will continue through October 12. October 8 is Comic Book Retailers Day at this year’s New York Comic Con.
Cast member reunions are a big theme for New York Comic Con panels this year. “Fantastic Four” (2005) co-stars Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis reunite for a panel discussion on October 9. Also on October 12, several voice cast members from the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will reunite for a panel discussion.
In addition, notable entertainers will get their own spotlight Q&As, such as actress Sigourney Weaver on October 10, actor Tim Blake Nelson on October 9, actor Hamish Linklater on October 12, and author George R.R. Martin on October 11. The 17th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 6 to October 9, 2022, in New York City. New York Comic Con has returned to being an in-person-only event, after being a hybrid event (where people could attend in person or virtually) in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con was cancelled as an in-person event in 2020 and instead presented as a scaled-down virtual-only event. Before the pandemic, New York Comic Con attracted about 250,000 people per year since 2017, according to ReedPOP, the company that produces the event. The first New York Comic Con took place in 2006.
In 2022, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con in 2022 has less activities, panels and locations than in previous years. For example, in 2019, New York Comic Con took place at several other locations in New York City, including Hammerstein Ballroom, the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, the New York Public Library, the Way Station (in Brooklyn) and AMC 34th Street. Anime Fest (an offshoot of Anime Expo that was presented in conjunction with New York Comic Con in 2018 and 2019) will not take place at New York Comic Con in 2022. Anime Fest was also cancelled in 2021. It’s unknown at this point if Anime Fest will be revived.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in safety requirements for New York Comic Con that began in 2021. All attendees are being asked to wear a face covering/mask at all times while inside a New York Comic Con building, except when eating or drinking. However, attendees do not have to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, which were requirements in 2021.
TV shows continue to dominate the most high-profile panels and activities. New York Comic Con in 2022 has the following TV shows with panel showcases in the event’s largest rooms: CBS’s supernatural comedy series “Ghosts” on October 6; HBO Max’s animated series “Velma” (a spinoff of the “Scooby-Doo” series) on October 6; HBO/BBC’s fantasy drama series “His Dark Materials” on October 6; Fox’s animated series “Krapopolis” on October 7; Disney+’s action series “American Born Chinese” on October 7; Prime Video’s fantasy series “Good Omens” on October 7; Crunchyroll’s anime series “Chainsaw Man”; Syfy’s horror series “Chucky”; and Disney+’s fantasy series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” on October 7. Prime Video’s fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will have a joint panel on October 7.
More TV show panels include Prime Video’s sci-fi series “The Peripheral” on October 8; Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” on October 8; Crunchyroll’s “My Hero Academia” on October 8; Netflix’s horror/fantasy series “Wednesday” (a spinoff of “The Addams Family”) on October 8; AMC’s “The Walking Dead” on October 8; Disney+’s “The Muppets Mayhem” on October 9; The WB’s “The Winchesters” on October 9; and Starz’s “The Outlander” on October 9.
Paramount+’s “Star Trek” Universe will have a multi-series panel on October 8, with stars from “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Picard” and “Star Trek: Prodigy.” HBO Max’s “Doom Patrol” and “Titans” will have a joint panel on October 9. Cartoon Network and Adult Swim’s panel on October 9 will include a sneak preview of the “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal” series with creator Genndy Tartakovsky. There will also be a “Smallville” reunion on October 8, with stars Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Kristin Kreuk and John Glover.

Most of the feature films that have panels at New York Comic Con this year are animated films and horror movies. They include the world premiere screenings of horror film “Significant Other” on October 6 and the action-comedy “Violent Night” on October 7. The horror film “V/H/S/99” will have a discussion panel and sneak preview clips on October 7. Animated films getting their own panels include “Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm” on October 6; “Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons” on October 7; “Wendell & Wild” on October 8; and “Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind” on October 8. There will also be panel discussions for “Teen Wolf: The Movie” on October 7, and the zany biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” on October 9.
In addition, New York Comic Con will have Q&As that each spotlight different actors and actresses. Two scream queens will team up when Jamie Lee Curtis (star of several “Halloween” movies) will be interviewed by Drew Barrymore (1996’s “Scream”) for a Q&A on October 8. For 1980s nostalgia, there’s a “Back to the Future” reunion panel with stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd on October 8. Oscar Isaac (who has starred in some “Star Wars” sequels, the 2021 remake of “Dune” and the Disney+ series “Moon Knight”) gets a spotlight Q&A on October 9.
Broadway stars are represented on several panels. “The Big Broadway Nerd Panel” will feature panelists Mason Alexander Park on October 6. New York Comic Con also offer specialty areas for attendees with specific identity needs. New this year at the River Pavilion is a gathering space called Asia Pop, for fans and enthusiasts of Asian pop culture. The Asia Pop center will offer discussion panels and a manga lending library. Also new this year is the Pride Lounge (located in Room 1C01-02), for people with LGBTQ interests, with some LGBTQ-themed discussion panels and guest appearances.
Family HQ (in Room 1E01-05) is a family-friendly environment, with an emphasis on activities for pre-teen children. In addition, Gaming Zone (in Room 1E) returns to offer a variety of options for gamers. The Community Lounge (located in the River Pavilion) is for informal gatherings and if attendees just need a place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the other areas of the event. Julie Plec, creator/showrunner of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Vampire Academy” TV series will be doing a special meet-up with fans in the Community Lounger on October 6, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
And, of course, there will be plenty of panels, exhibits and previews for comic books, video games, fantasy novels and other pop-culture attractions. It wouldn’t be a Comic Con without cosplaying and merchandise sales. The Cosplay Central area returns to the River Pavilion at the Javits Center. While at Cosplay Central, cosplayers can mingle, pose for photos, use the dressing rooms and attend panel discussions. The New York Comic Con finalist round for the Cosplay Central Crown Championship will take place on October 8 at Main Stage 1D Hall.
