Grammy Awards

Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Chloe x Halle and tributes to Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton have been added to the performing lineup at the 61st Grammy Awards, which will take place at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on February 10, 2019. As previously announced, Alicia Keys is hosting the show, which will have its U.S. telecast on CBS.

Previously announced artists include Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Dan + Shay, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Diana Ross.

[February 7, 2019 UPDATE: The following entertainers will be presenters at the 61st Grammy Awards: Kelsea Ballerini, Leon Bridges, Luke Combs, Charlie Wilson, Alessia Cara, Julian Edelman, Eve, John Mayer, Bob Newhart, Smokey Robinson, Swizz Beatz, Meghan Trainor, Kane Brown, BTS, Cedric The Entertainer, Nina Dobrev, Anna Kendrick, Jada Pinkett Smith and Wilmer Valderrama.]

Lady Gaga will perform “Shallow” (from the 2018 “A Star is Born” movie soundtrack) with Mark Ronson, who wrote “Shallow” with Lady Gaga, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. “Shallow” is nominated for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The Grammy Awards take place on the same night as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, where Lady Gaga is nominated for Best Actress and Best  Music for “A Star Is Born.” By choosing to attend the Grammys instead, it’s clear that Lady Gaga is going to the ceremony where she thinks she has the better chance of winning more awards.

Meanwhile, on-stage collaborations at the 2019 Grammys have been announced: Cabello will be joined by J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval for her performance. Female singers Dua Lipa and St. Vincent will team up for their Grammy performance.

One artist who won’t be performing at the Grammys this year is Ariana Grande, who is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album (“Sweetener”) and Best Pop Solo Performance (“God Is a Woman”). According to Variety, Grande canceled her performance and will not be attending the show because of a dispute over which songs she could sing at the Grammys. She had been set to do a medley of two songs, and reportedly had to fight the show’s producers to perform her current single “7 Rings,” but ultimately quit when the producers would not allow her to choose the second song.

The 61st Grammy Awards show is produced by AEG Ehrlich Ventures for the Recording Academy. Ken Ehrlich is executive producer, Ben Winston is executive producer, Louis J. Horvitz is director, Chantel Sausedo is the producer, and David Wild and Ehrlich are the writers.

In 2018, the Recording Academy received an enormous amount of backlash for having a male-dominated Grammy ceremony, which led to the social-media hashtag #GrammysSoMale. That year, the overwhelming number of Grammy nominees and winners were male, and the only artist with an Album of the Year nomination who was not invited to perform solo on the show was female singer Lorde. (Lorde attended the ceremony but did not perform.) In 2019, the Recording Academy has taken big steps to have more women on the Grammys stage. Keys is one of the few women who have hosted the Grammy ceremony. And three of the biggest tributes at the 2019 Grammys will be to women, while prominent on-stage collaborations will feature women.

Tyler Perry is hosting that separate tribute concert, which will include performances by Adams, Shirley Caesar, Alessia Cara, Kelly Clarkson, Common, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Keys, John Legend, Patti LaBelle, BeBe Winans, Carlile, Chloe x Halle, H.E.R., Monáe and SZA. CBS will televise the concert on March 10, 2019.

Parton, who is MusiCares’ 2019 Person of the Year, will perform a song from the “Dumplin'” movie soundtrack. As part of the Grammy Awards tribute, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Musgraves and Perry will perform some of Parton’s songs. This will be the second tribute to Parton in two days. On February 8, Parton’s MusiCares Person of the Year concert (which is not televised) will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with performances by Parton, Cyrus, Perry, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Leon Bridges, Lauren Daigle, Norah Jones, Mendes, Pink, Ronson, Chris Stapleton, Vince Gill, Don Henley, Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Linda Perry and Mavis Staples.

As previously reported, Ross is celebrating her 75th birthday this year with a “Diamond Diana” performance at the Grammys. The performance is expected to be a medley of some of her hit songs. Ross will also be a performer at “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration,” an all-star concert for Motown’s 60th anniversary that will be filmed for CBS at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on January 12, 2019. Other “Motown 60” performers include Smokey Robinson, Boyz II Men, Chloe x Halle, Ciara, Lamont Dozier, Fantasia, Brian & Eddie Holland, Thelma Houston, Tori Kelly, John Legend, Little Big Town, Ne-Yo, Pentatonix, Martha Reeves, Valerie Simpson, Mickey Stevenson, Meghan Trainor and Stevie Wonder.  Cedric the Entertainer is hosting the show, which CBS will premiere on April 21.

She was consistently the most streamed female artist on Spotify and in the top 5 globally this past year. “Dua Lipa” sold 3 million copies, with singles reaching 32 million sold. Most recently, Lipa made BRIT Award history becoming the first woman artist to pick up five nominations, taking home the awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist.

“Gemini,” Macklemore’s first solo effort in 12 years, was released in September of 2017 and is RIAA certified golf. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Independent Albums charts. The album follows two releases with producer Ryan Lewis: the multiple-Grammy award winning album ‘The Heist’ and 2016 release ‘This Unruly Mess I’ve Made’ (featuring Platinum-certified single “Downtown”). “Gemini” includes platinum singles “Glorious” (featuring Skylar Grey) and “Good Old Days” (featuring Kesha), and gold single “Marmalade” (featuring Lil Yachty). The viral video for hit single “Glorious” stars Macklemore’s 100 year old grandmother, while the video for “Marmalade” (featuring Lil Yachty) stars a Mini Macklemore and a Lil Lil Yachty with cameos by running back legend Marshawn Lynch, Lil Yachty and Macklemore. The video for third single, “Good Old Days” (featuring Kesha) stars Macklemore and Kesha, and the video for “Corner Store” (featuring Dave B and Travis Thompson) features all three of the Seattle rappers. He recently completed a North American co-headlining tour entitled “The Adventures of Kesha and Macklemore,” which included stops at Jones Beach Theater in New York and The Forum in Los Angeles. Collectively Macklemore’s music videos have been viewed over 3 billion times and he is one of only two rappers to have a diamond-certified single. Macklemore’s previous solo releases include “The Language of My World” and the mixtapes “Open Your Eyes” and “The Unplanned Mixtape.” In the time between “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made,” the Seattle rapper’s 2016 album with Ryan Lewis and “Gemini,” Macklemore released two solo songs “Wednesday Morning” and “Drug Dealer,” performed on Ellen and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, was featured in an MTV special with President Obama about the opioid epidemic in America and was the first US citizen ever to participate in the Presidential Weekly Address.

Skylar Grey is a five-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter.  She is responsible for co-writing some of the most memorable songs to light up the Billboard Hot 100 and iTunes sales charts, totaling more than 25 million in sales worldwide. Grey collaborated with Eminem on his latest record “Revival” released on December 15, 2017. She is featured on the song “Tragic Endings” and has three additional writing and producing credits on the album including “Walk On Water” featuring Beyoncé, “Like Home” featuring Alicia Keys, and “Need Me” featuring Pink. She performed “Walk On Water,” “Stan” and “Love The Way You Lie” on Saturday Night Live with Eminem on November 18. 2017, the former of which she also co-wrote. Last year, Grey featured on Macklemore’s platinum single “Glorious,” which was included on his solo album “Gemini,” released on September 22, 2017.  The song reached #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. For Super Bowl LII, Grey’s stirring rendition of the 1961 Ben E King classic “Stand By Me” soundtracked Budweiser’s commercial. Grey performed the song on “The Today Show” on February 2, 2018. Currently, Grey is working on her third studio album with Interscope Records/Kid In A Korner.  After years of experimentation, she is revisiting her organic style roots with her new sound.  “I’ve definitely gone on a lot of musical adventures over the past few years, working with people in hip-hop and with DJs and experimenting in all these different genres,” Grey says. “And it’s good to keep going on adventures, because you never know what you’re capable of. But this new album is very much me coming home, and doing something that’s most authentic to who I am at the core.” Grey a Wisconsin native, currently resides in Napa, California.

2018 American Music Awards: Aretha Franklin tribute, Ciara, Dua Lipa, Missy Elliott added to show

September 28, 2018

AMAs logo

The following is a press release from Dick Clark Productions and ABC:

Dick Clark Productions and ABC have announced an all-star lineup of soul and gospel legends who will come together to pay homage to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, at the “2018 American Music Awards.” Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans, friends of the late, luminary singer/songwriter, will take the AMAs stage for a moving tribute honoring Franklin’s gospel roots and iconic gospel album, Amazing Grace. Consulting producer for the tribute is the Emmy Award® winning music director, composer and producer Rickey Minor.
Also announced:  a red-hot collaboration from multi-platinum selling artist Ciara and two-time American Music Award winner Missy Elliott, as well as a performance from singer/songwriter and first-time AMA nominee Dua Lipa.
Set to perform on the American Music Awards stage for the first time since in 2005, award-winning artist Ciara will be joined by Hip-Hop and R&B legend Missy Elliott for two heavy-hitting performances, including Ciara’s “Level Up,” which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, ranked in the Top 10 on the Digital Song Sales chart, and became the No. 1-trending topic on YouTube after spawning the Level Up Challenge. Additionally, Ciara will perform “Dose,” the new single from her forthcoming studio album. American Music Awards newcomer and New Artist of the Year presented by Capital One® Savor® Card nominee, Dua Lipa, will take the AMAs performance stage for the first time with two of her hits from the complete edition of her self-titled, debut studio album, including “Electricity,” her latest Billboard Hot 100 collaboration.  Since its debut, the popular house track has landed spots amongst Billboard’s Dance Club Songs, Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and Pop Songs airplay charts.
They join previously announced performers Benny Blanco with Halsey and Khalid, Cardi B with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, Mariah Carey, Post Malone featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Carrie Underwood, with additional performers to be announced.

Hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross, the “2018 American Music Awards,” the world’s largest fan-voted awards show, will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the American Music Awards, dick clark productions and American Music Awards’ producer, Larry Klein, for honoring Aretha Franklin with a musical tribute for this year’s broadcast,” said Sabrina Owens, Franklin’s niece and executor of the Aretha Franklin Estate. “Throughout its 46-year history, the American Music Awards has continued to stand by the music and honor the best in talent and the greatest in popular music culture. When I heard some of the initial ideas for the tribute, I knew without a doubt that this tribute will go down as one of the best in American music.”  Owens adds, “We still remember when Aretha won her first American Music Award in 1976 for Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B, and throughout the years, she went on to win five more awards and we will never forget when she hosted the show; as well as her memorable performances. Dick Clark helped to revolutionize American music, and along the way, Aretha Franklin was part of that revolution.”

“It’s a blessing to be a part of this moving musical tribute to honor our late queen and sister, Aretha,” said Gladys Knight. “She was an icon and visionary, radiated light and love through all of her life’s work, and touched all of us through her incredible gift of music.”

“Aretha was the voice of a generation,” said music director, composer and producer, Rickey Minor. “She transcended racial barriers by reaching into the depths of her soul and taking us on a journey with every note she sang. Her spirit will live forever in her music.”

One of the most iconic voices in music history, Franklin accumulated six American Music Awards in her lifetime, including Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B (1976, 1977, 1984 and 1986), Favorite Female Video Artist – Soul/R&B (1986) and Favorite Album – Soul/R&B (1983). She served as host of, and performed on, the AMAs in 1976 and 1983, and last performed on the AMAs stage in 1986. Franklin left a resounding mark on the music world and beyond, also garnering an induction into the Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues Halls of Fame, a Kennedy Center Honor, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and by utilizing her voice for social issues including civil and women’s rights.

The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Fall of 2015 marked the release of Knight’s first mainstream dance record, “Just A Little” in nearly twenty years. The song serves as lead single from her twelfth studio album that she is currently working on. Knight, who is a two-time Grammy winner in the gospel category, yet again embraced her gospel roots, releasing her inspirational album “Where My Heart Belongs,” in September 2014. The album was a major success and won an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Gospel Album.” All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade:  “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); the inspirational “Many Different Roads” (1999); and “At Last” (2001).  “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Williams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd and Tiger Roberts. Her involvement in other creative undertakings, business ventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive, and has brought her honors from industry and community alike.

Ledisi is a 12x Grammy-nominated vocal powerhouse who has wowed fans ever since she came onto the scene. She’s earned a place in the pantheon of the best soul singers of her generation. Ledisi is a favorite of The Obamas and has performed eight times at the White House. Her fans include icons, legends and current chart-toppers like the late- Prince, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and more. She has headlined two national sold-out tours, performed alongside Richie Sambora, Dave Matthews, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Maxwell and many more. She’s appeared on nationally recognized shows like Good Morning America, HARRY, The David Letterman Show, The Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and VH-1’s Diva’s Live to name a few. In 2015 she appeared in the Oscar-nominated movie Selma as Mahalia Jackson and is currently starring in Gabourey Sidibe’s Shatterbox Anthology film, The Tale Of Four. 2018 Billboard Music Awards: Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes first performers announced

April 23, 2018

The following is a press release from Dick Clark Productions and NBC:

Dick Clark Productions and NBC today announced the first round of performers for the “2018 Billboard Music Awards.” Top New Artist nominee, Camila Cabello, UK’s hottest act, Dua Lipa, and multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter, Shawn Mendes, will all take the stage on a night filled with music’s biggest names!

Hosted by “The Voice” coach Kelly Clarkson, the “2018 Billboard Music Awards” will broadcast LIVE from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 20 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC. The three-hour telecast will feature performances from this year’s hottest musical acts, unexpected collaborations and buzzworthy moments that celebrate 60 years of the Billboard Hot 100!

Talent fun facts include:

  • Camila Cabello is a four-time Billboard Music Award nominee this year with nods for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Collaboration for “Havana” featuring Young Thug and the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award. She started off her solo career with a bang, scoring a top 10 hit in 2016 on the Pop Songs chart with “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” her duet with Shawn Mendes. She followed it up with three more top 40 hits on the list, including the No. 1 “Bad Things” with Machine Gun Kelly. In 2017-18, she logged her biggest hit yet, as the single “Havana,” featuring Young Thug, spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Pop Songs chart and became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track ushered in her debut album, Camila, which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and made her the first woman in three years to hit No. 1 with her debut full-length album.
  • The “2018 Billboard Music Awards” appearance will mark Dua Lipa’s first performance on an award show in the United States. The U.K. pop superstar has quickly ascended on the U.S. Billboard charts this last year, currently with her empowering anthem “IDGAF” rising on Billboard’s Top 40 chart following a trio of No. 1 hits on the Dance Club Songs chart: “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” “Be the One” and “New Rules.” The latter track became a smash single for the pop singer-songwriter across multiple charts and radio formats as it sailed to No. 1 on the Pop Songs chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 2018. “New Rules,” taken from her self-titled debut studio album, has gone on to earn more than 430 million on-demand streams in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. Additionally, the video for the track has amassed 1.1 billion views on YouTube, making Dua the first female solo artist to reach 1 billion views on the platform.
  • At just 19-years-old, singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has captured two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, seven top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and two No. 1s on the Pop Songs chart. He blasted onto Billboard’s charts in 2015 with his debut hit “Life of the Party,” and has continued to rack up smash singles. His most recent hit, “In My Blood,” has already hit the top 40 on the Hot 100 and top five on the Digital Song Sales chart. In total, Mendes’ albums have earned over 3 million equivalent album units in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music, and his catalog of songs have generated nearly 3 billion on-demand streams. This year, Mendes is nominated for the fan-voted Top Social Artist Award.
Cuban-born singer/songwriter Camila Cabello (Epic Records / SYCO) released her debut solo album, CAMILA, in January 2018 to rave reviews. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart the same week that her single “Havana” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The RIAA platinum-certified album, CAMILA, launched its debut at No. 1 on over 100 iTunes charts around the world, breaking the record for most No. 1 positions for a debut album in iTunes history. Beginning her official solo career after four years in Fifth Harmony, Cabello released her RIAA 5x-platinum smash hit “Havana,” in August 2017, which later obtained the No. 1 spot on the Billboard’s Pop Songs chart, marking her second No. 1 as a solo artist. Furthermore, “Havana” hit No. 1 on the iTunes overall top songs chart, No. 2 on the Spotify Global chart and hit No. 1 in 80 countries around the world. “Havana” is the first song by a female artist to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, Pop Songs and Rhythmic Songs charts in 22 years, has earned 736 million on-demand U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music, and attained the longest run at No. 1 on Pop Songs for any song by a female artist since 2013.  Her next single, “Never Be The Same,” was released in January 2018 and is currently No. 2 on Pop Songs and inside the top 15 of the Billboard Hot 100. Cabello had already earned a chart-topping smash with the recent double platinum-certified hit “Bad Things” with Machine Gun Kelly. The track generated over 350 million on-demand streams and a result of its success, she became the fifth female artist to hit #1 on the Pop Songs chart with and without a group.

With the release of her self-titled debut album, London-born, Kosovo-raised Dua Lipa has won over the hearts of fans and press alike. The songs on Dua Lipa announce the arrival of a new force in pop—irresistible on the dance floor, thoughtful under closer inspection, constantly discovering creative possibilities. Her critically acclaimed debut has made several “best of” lists, from The FADERRolling Stone and TIME. Her powerful anthem “New Rules” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its viral video made her the youngest female solo artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. Dua continues to find herself on the top of the charts, consistently being one of the top-streamed female artists in the world on Spotify and reaching No. 1 on the Top 40 chart. Most recently, Dua made BRIT Award history, becoming the first woman artist to pick up five nominations, taking home the awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist.

Shawn Mendes recently released new tracks “In My Blood” and “Lost In Japan” from his highly-anticipated third album. Both tracks have already experienced massive success, soaring to Nos. 22 and 64, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 and No. 2 on the overall iTunes chart in the U.S, Top 5 on iTunes in 50 countries, and holding the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist. The tracks have received critical acclaim from outlets including Rolling Stone, Billboard, Idolator, Variety and Paste, with “In My Blood” topping TIME magazine’s “5 Songs You Need to Listen to This Week” and The New York Times’ “The Playlist.” “In My Blood” and “Lost In Japan” are the first new songs released by Shawn since his 3x Platinum hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” in April 2017. The track scored Shawn his second No. 1 single on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart, joining 6x Platinum single “Stitches.” With “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” Shawn also became the first artist to ever have three No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart before the age of 20. Throughout his career, Shawn has achieved two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 with Handwritten (2015) and Illuminate (2016), two Platinum albums, and seven consecutive Platinum and multi-Platinum singles. Worldwide, he has sold over 10 million albums, 100 million singles, and has amassed over 11 billion song streams and 4 billion YouTube views. Shawn has completed two sold-out world tours with over one million tickets sold, selling out legendary arenas including NYC’s Madison Square Garden, Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, and London’s O2 Arena in minutes. He topped Billboard’s “21 Under 21” in 2017 and has been featured on Forbes “30 Under 30,” Spotify’s “25 Under 25,” and Time Magazine’s “Most Influential Teens” for 4 consecutive years. In February 2018, ROI Influencer Media recognized Shawn as the #1 Most Influential Artist and #1 Most Influential Teen across all social media platforms.

Voting for the two fan voted categories, Billboard Chart Achievement Award and Top Social Artist, will open in the coming weeks and additional details will be available soon.

“Billboard Music Awards” nominees are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound. The finalists and award winners are determined using data reflecting a 12-month tracking period.  The awards are based on the reporting period of April 8, 2017 through March 31, 2018. Since 1940, the Billboard charts have been the go-to guide for ranking the popularity of artists, songs and albums, and are the ultimate measure of success in music.
