Recording Academy makes several changes to Grammy Award rules, including revisions in R&B, rap and Latin music categories

The Recording Academy announced today that it has made major changes to several rules and guidelines that reflect its ongoing commitment to evolve with the musical landscape and to ensure that the GRAMMY Awards nominating process and rules are more transparent and fair.

Among the changes are updates to the Best New Artist category, Latin, R&B and Rap Fields, Nominations Review Committees and more. The new changes go into effect immediately for the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards. In addition, the GRAMMY Awards Rules & Guidelines are now, for the first time, available and can be found here.

“I’m excited to announce our latest changes, as we’re constantly evaluating our Awards process and evolving it to ensure the GRAMMY Awards are inclusive and reflect the current state of the music industry,” said Harvey Mason jr., Chair & Interim President/CEO of the Recording Academy. “The Academy accepts proposals for rule changes from members of the music community throughout the year that are carefully reviewed and, if accepted, ultimately ratified at our annual Board meeting, a process that we are proud to have continued in this challenging year.”

“As a peer-driven and peer-voted award, members of the music community are directly involved in the growth and preservation of the GRAMMYs process,” said Bill Freimuth, Chief Awards Officer at the Recording Academy. “Each year we receive a number of rule change proposals from artists, producers and songwriters asking us to reevaluate our process to better reflect the current state of the music industry and how it’s evolved over the past 12 months.”

APPROVED RULE AMENDMENTS:

Best Urban Contemporary Album has been renamed Best Progressive R&B Album to appropriately categorize and describe this subgenre. This change includes a more accurate definition to describe the merit or characteristics of music compositions or performances themselves within the genre of R&B.

This category is intended to highlight albums that include the more progressive elements of R&B and may include samples and elements of hip-hop, rap, dance, and electronic music. It may also incorporate production elements found in pop, euro-pop, country, rock, folk and alternative.

Likewise, Best Rap/Sung Performance has been renamed Best Melodic Rap Performance to represent the inclusivity of the growing hybrid performance trends within the rap genre. The expanded category is defined as follows:

This category is intended to recognize solo and collaborative performances containing elements of rap and melody over modern production. This performance requires a strong and clear presence of melody combined with rap cadence, and is inclusive of dialects, lyrics or performance elements from non-rap genres including R&B, rock, country, electronic or more. The production may include traditional elements of rap or elements characteristic of the aforementioned non-rap genres.

In addition, Latin Pop Album has been renamed Best Latin Pop Or Urban Album, and Latin Rock, Urban Or Alternative Album has been renamed Best Latin Rock Or Alternative Album to migrate the genres of Latin urban and represent the current state and prominent representation in the Latin urban genres.

The Best Latin Pop Or Urban Album category is intended to recognize excellence in Latin pop or urban music recordings that utilize a stylistic intention, song structure, lyrical content, and/or musical presentation to create a sensibility that reflects the broad spectrum of Latin pop music style and culture. The category includes recordings from balladeers and commercial Latin music and is not limited to any one region.

The Best Latin Rock Or Alternative Album category is intended to highlight Latin rock or alternative music recordings that utilize a stylistic intention, song structure, lyrical content and/or musical presentation to create a sensibility that reflects the broad spectrum of the Latin music style and culture.

Finally, there is no longer a specified maximum number of releases prohibiting artists from entering the Best New Artist category. As such, the screening committees will be charged with determining whether the artist had attained a breakthrough or prominence prior to the eligibility year. Such a determination would result in disqualification.

Nominations Review Committees & Addressing Potential Conflicts of Interest

At the time of invitation to participate on a Nominations Review Committee, a conflict of interest disclosure form will be provided. Each person invited to be a member of such a committee must disclose to the best of their knowledge whether, in connection with any recording that may be entered in the current year’s GRAMMY Awards process, (a) the person would be in line to receive a GRAMMY nomination or win for any recordings being considered in a particular category, (b) the person would have any direct or indirect financial ties to the recordings or creators under consideration, (c) the person has immediate familial ties to any of the artists in the top voter selections, and/or (d) any other conflict of interest, actual or perceived. If a recording listed by the invitee presents a conflict of interest, the Academy will notify the committee member that they cannot participate on the committee that year. If, in the unlikely event that, despite these proactive efforts, a conflict is discovered during the committee meeting, that person will be notified and recused from the meeting. Failure to voluntarily disclose any conflict of interest will result in the person being barred from future Nominations Review Committee participation.

2020 Grammy Awards: Billie Eilish is the biggest winner and sweeps the top prizes

At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, pop singer Billie Eilish made Grammy history by becoming the first female artist to sweep all four of the top general field categories in the same year. The ceremony took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020. CBS had the U.S. telecast of the show, which was hosted for the second year in a row by Alicia Keys.

Eilish took the prizes for Best New Artist and Album of the Year (for “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”), while her hit “Bad Guy” won the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. (Christopher Cross is only other artist to accomplish this feat of winning all four of these Grammys in the same year. He did so in 1981.) Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” also won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, bringing her total to five Grammys—the most Grammys won at the 2020 Grammy ceremony. At 18 years old, Eilish is also the youngest artist to win a Grammy for Album of the Year.

Eilish went into the ceremony with six Grammy nominations. An early indication that Eilish (whose full name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell) would win big was when her producer brother, Finneas O’Connell, won the Grammy for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) for producing “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” Most of the Grammy Awards, including the Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) category, are handed out in a pre-telecast ceremony that is streamed on the Grammy Awards website.

Lizzo, who had the most (eight) Grammy nods going into the ceremony, ended up with three Grammys: Best Pop Solo Performance (for “Truth Hurts”); Best Urban Contemporary Album (for “Cuz I Love You (Deluxe)”); and Best Traditional R&B Performance (for “Jerome”).

Lil Nas X had six nominations and won two Grammys, both for “Old Town Road,” his collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus: Best Pop Duo/Group Vocal Performance and Best Music Video.

Gary Clark Jr. won three Grammys for his “This Land” song and album: Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Several people on stage, including Grammy host Keys, acknowledged the shocking death of basketball star Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash earlier that day with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people. The award ceremony had visual images paying tribute to Bryant.

As expected at the Grammy show, there were several all-star collaborations on stage. Old Town Road All-Stars featured Lil Nas X and Cyrus, joined by BTS, Diplo and Mason Ramsey to perform the Grammy-winning song “Old Town Road.”

Additionally, to acknowledge the importance of music education in schools by both the longtime Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich and the Recording Academy, artists associated with Ehrlich’s 40-year career gathered to perform “I Sing the Body Electric” from the film “Fame.” The 2020 Grammy ceremony was the last to be produced by Ehrlich, who is handing over producing duties to “The Late, Late Show” executive producer Ben Winston. The “I Sing the Body Electric” performance featured Camila Cabello, Clark and John Legend, joined by Debbie Allen, Joshua Bell, Common, Misty Copeland, Lang Lang, Cyndi Lauper, Ben Platt and the War and Treaty.

Other performers at the Grammy ceremony included Aerosmith, Brandi Carlile, Eilish, Kirk Franklin, Ariana Grande, H.E.R., Jonas Brothers, DJ Khaled, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, Meek Mill, Roddy Ricch, Rosalía, Run-D.M.C., Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Tanya Tucker, Tyler The Creator, Charlie Wilson and YG.

In keeping with the tradition of presenting signature “Grammy Moments,” CBS and the Recording Academy® have announced two special segments to take place on the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards The first, “Old Town Road All-Stars,” will feature current nominees Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, joined by BTS, Diplo, Mason Ramsey and other surprise guests. In the past year, “Old Town Road” has been the subject of mixes and mashups, which inspired bringing together various acts who have performed it to create a one-of-a-kind performance.

Additionally, to acknowledge the importance of music education in schools by both the longtime Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich and the Recording Academy, artists associated with Ehrlich’s 40-year career will gather to perform “I Sing the Body Electric” from the film “Fame.” The performance will feature current nominees Camila Cabello, Gary Clark Jr. and John Legend, joined by Debbie Allen, Joshua Bell, Common, Misty Copeland, Lang Lang, Cyndi Lauper, Ben Platt and the War and Treaty.

Previously announced Gary Clark Jr. will be joined by The Roots to perform Clark’s Grammy-nominated song “This Land”; Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Trombone Shorty will unite to honor those we have lost this year in a touching “In Memoriam” tribute; and Sheila E. will take the stage with Usher for an exciting Grammy Salute to Prince.

This year’s presenters include Common, Ava DuVernay, Cynthia Erivo, Jim Gaffigan, Dua Lipa, Trevor Noah, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Porter, Bebe Rexha, Smokey Robinson, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and Stevie Wonder.

Recording Academy fires president/CEO Deborah Dugan; she files EEOC complaint alleging rape and wrongful termination

The Recording Academy’s ouster of its first female president/CEO, Deborah Dugan (after she was on the job for only five months), has resulted in Dugan filing an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint with some bombshell allegations, including accusations that top-ranking officials engaged in sexual abuse/harassment and corruption. The Recording Academy (the organization behind the Grammy Awards) announced Dugan’s “administrative leave” ouster on January 16, 2019, and her complaint was filed on January 21, 2020. In the complaint, Dugan alleges that she heard from a Recording Academy employee that Neil Portnow, who was the Recording Academy’s president/CEO from 2002 to 2019, raped an unnamed female artist after the artist performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The artist is only described as a Recording Academy member who’s not from the United States. The year this alleged incident occurred was not included in the complaint.

The complaint also alleges that several unnamed people in the Recording Academy knew that Portnow engaged in sexual misconduct with other women, who are also unnamed. Dugan further claims that Recording Academy executive attorney Neil Fox sexually harassed Dugan by trying to forcibly kiss her and repeatedly calling her “baby.” Dugan’s other allegations are that the Recording Academy engages in corruption in the Grammy voting process and that certain board members overspend and abuse the Recording Academy’s funding.

According to the complaint, the alleged rape was the real reason why the Recording Academy announced in May 2018 that Portnow would be stepping down from the position. After the Grammy Awards in January 2018, Portnow received extensive criticism for saying in a post-Grammys press conference that female artists and producers needed to “step up” if they wanted to be nominated for and win more Grammys. The overwhelming majority of nominees and winners at the 2018 Grammys were men, as are the majority of the Recording Academy’s voting members. Portnow later made a public apology for the “step up” comment, and the Recording Academy formed the Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion, consisting primarily of women and people of color. Prior to Portnow announcing his resignation, Portnow was accused of mishandling Recording Academy funds for the 2018 MusiCares event. He denied the allegations.

After a year-long search for Portnow’s successor, Dugan was appointed to the Recording Academy’s CEO position, and her official start date was August 1, 2019. According to Showbiz 411, Portnow’s former executive assistant Claudine Little was preparing to file a lawsuit against Duggan for creating an abusive work environment. Unnamed sources also told Showbiz 411 that Dugan’s management style was arrogant, dismissive and not well-received by longtime staffers and board members. Meanwhile, other unnamed sources told Variety that Dugan was forced out by a coup from Recording Academy board members who feared they would lose their positions and perks after Dugan did an audit of the Recording Academy’s finances and was planning to make sweeping changes.

Until a permanent replacement has been announced, Recording Academy board chair Harvey Mason Jr. has been appointed interim president/CEO of the Recording Academy. On January 20, 2020, Mason issued a statement to the Recording Academy’s membership. In the statement, Mason revealed that in November 2019, allegations began that Dugan was creating a hostile and toxic work environment. According to Mason’s statement, the Recording Academy launched two separate, independent investigations, and Dugan “was placed on administrative leave as we complete both of these ongoing investigations.”

Meanwhile, Public Enemy co-founder Chuck D posted an open letter on his Instagram account, in which he expressed support for Dugan. Chuck D commented in the statement: “I salute Deborah Dugan for her truth and courage to try and effect change. As always, a bunch of ignorant, testosterone-fueled, usually old white men stop progress.”

Dugan, a former Wall Street attorney, has held executive positions in various areas of the entertainment industry, including executive VP of EMI Record Group; president of Disney Publishing Worldwide; and president/CEO of the British broadcaster Entertainment Rights. Prior to joining the Recording Academy, Dugan was CEO of (RED), the nonprofit co-founded in 2006 by U2 singer Bono and attorney/activist Bobby Shriver. Dugan also served as senior adviser to the Tribeca Enterprises Board and headed legal services for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.

Her attorneys Doug Wigdor and Michael Willeman issued this statement on January 21, 2020: “The complaint that we filed today against the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammys) highlights tactics reminiscent of those deployed by individuals defending Harvey Weinstein.  As we allege, the attempt by the Recording Academy to impugn the character of Deborah Dugan is a transparent effort to shift the focus away from its own unlawful activity. This blatant form of retaliation in corporate America is all too common, even post #MeToo, and we will utilize all lawful means necessary to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

The statement continues, “As alleged, from the very beginning of her employment as the Recording Academy’s first female CEO and President, Ms. Dugan complained about and attempted to remedy the lack of diversity, sexual harassment and other improprieties at the Academy (which were gender based), including egregious conflicts of interest, improper self-dealing by Board members, voting irregularities with respect to nominations for Grammy Awards and other misconduct. In response to her complaints, as alleged, the Academy unlawfully retaliated against Ms. Dugan by placing her on administrative leave (only after she indicated her intent to commence legal action and refused to settle her claims on terms dictated by the Academy), threatening Ms. Dugan with termination and publishing false and defamatory statements about Ms. Dugan to the media.  Moreover, as of just yesterday, as alleged, the Academy’s interim CEO and President, Harvey Mason Jr., penned and published a false, retaliatory and defamatory letter designed to ‘get out in front’ of this Charge and further destroy Ms. Dugan’s reputation.”

During all of this controversy, the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony is set to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020. CBS will have the U.S. telecast of the show, which will be hosted by Alicia Keys for the second year in a row. It will be the last Grammy Awards executive produced by Ken Ehrlich, who served as executive producer of the Grammys for the past 40 years. Ehrlich, who will still work in television, will be replaced as Grammy Awards show executive producer by Ben Winston, who also executive produces the CBS talk show “The Late, Late Show With James Corden.” Corden hosted the Grammy Awards in 2017 and 2018.

UPDATE: Portnow and Fox have publicly denied all the allegations made against them in Dugan’s complaint.

2020 Grammy Awards: Aerosmith, Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Blake Shelton among performers

CBS and the Recording Academy® have confirmed the next slate of performers for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato announced on social media earlier this week they will take the stage for Music’s Biggest Night. In addition, current Grammy nominees Camilla Cabello; H.E.R.; Jonas Brothers; Rosalía; Tyler, The Creator, and 13-time nominee Charlie Wilson are set to deliver unforgettable performances. Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Run-D.M.C will perform with previously announced Aerosmith. Ten-time Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt will deliver a tribute performance honoring Lifetime Achievement Awards recipient John Prine. They all join previously announced performers Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. Hosted by Alicia Keys, the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from Staples Center in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound Sunday, Jan. 26 (8:00-11:30 PM, live ET/5:00-8:30 PM, live PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on CBS All Access.

  • Four-time Grammy-winning band Aerosmith first performed on the 33rd Grammy Awards stage in 1991. This year, they are appearing as the MusiCares Person of the Year, being recognized for their considerable philanthropic efforts over five decades and undeniable impact on American music history.
  • Making her Grammy performance debut, first-time Grammy nominee Billie Eilish is nominated for six awards including Record Of The Year (“Bad Guy”), Album Of The Year (When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?), Song Of The Year (“Bad Guy”), Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance (“Bad Guy”), and Best Pop Vocal Album (When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?).

2020 Grammy Awards: Lizzo is the top nominee

With eight nominations, hip-hop artist Lizzo is the top contender for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards. The nominations were announced on November 20, 2019.  Pop singer Billie Eilish and rapper Lil Nas X earned six Grammy nods each. All three artists are competing in the categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist.

In the U.S., “CBS This Morning” had a live telecast of the nominations in the General Field categories. Alicia Keys, “CBS This Morning Host” Gayle King and singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha made the announcements. As previously reported, Keys will host the Grammy Awards for the second year in row. CBS will have a live telecast of the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, which will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020.

2020 Grammy Awards: Alicia Keys named host for second year in a row

Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and global superstar Alicia Keys will return as host of the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020 (8:00-11:30 PM, live ET/5:00-8:30 PM, live PT) on the CBS Television Network and on CBS All Access. Keys took to YouTube and social media this morning to announce the news in a video. The announcement comes just one week before Grammy nominees are revealed on Wednesday, Nov. 20 (8:20 AM, ET). Key categories will be announced live on “CBS This Morning.”

Last year’s ceremony marked Keys’ first time hosting an awards program and was met with praise from fans and critics alike. Her opening monologue featured special guest appearances from former first lady Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Jada Pinkett Smith. A standout moment when Keys played two pianos simultaneously in tribute to black pianist Hazel Scott became a top social moment according to Facebook.

“At first, I did think last year was a one-time thing, but when the opportunity came back around, there was no question about returning as host of the Grammy Awards,” said Keys. “Last year was such a powerful experience for me. Not only did I feel the love in the room, but I felt it from around the world, and it confirmed the healing and unifying power of music.”

2019 Grammy Awards: Kacey Musgraves, Childish Gambino win the top prizes

Kacey Musgraves’ critically acclaimed “Golden Hour” won Album of the Year, while Childish Gambino’s chart-topping single “This Is America” was named Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 61st Grammy Awards. CBS had the U.S. telecast of the ceremony, which took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb 10, 2019. Alicia Keys hosted the show. In total, Musgraves and Childish Gambino (the musical stage name of actor Donald Glover) won the most Grammys: four each. In addition to Record of the Year and Song of the Year, Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” also won Grammys for Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video. “This Is America” is the first hip-hop song to win the Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Glover/Childish Gambino did not attend the ceremony. Ludwig Göransson, who co-wrote and co-produced the song with Glover, gave the acceptance speech instead for Record of the Year. (Göransson also won a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, for “Black Panther,” which was an award that was not televised.)

Recordings eligible for the 2019 Grammy Awards were those released between October 1, 2017 and September 30, 2018. The awards are voted for by the Recording Academy.

This was the first year that the Grammys had the new expansions of the General Field categories—Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist—which have increased the number of nominees per category from five to eight. The policy change came after the 2018 Grammy Awards received a lot of criticism for having an overwhelming majority of male nominees and winners. It led to the social-media hashtag #GrammysSoMale, and the Recording Academy subsequently created a diversity and inclusion task force. All the other Grammy categories will continue to have five nominees per category, except in cases where there is a voting tie.

After the #GrammysSoMale backlash of 2018, the Grammys had several female winners in 2019. In addition to winning Album of the Year, Musgraves won all three of the country-music Grammys for which she was nominated. Cardi B made Grammy history has the first solo female artist to win Best Rap Album, for her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy.”

Lady Gaga won three Grammys: Her “Shallow” duet with her “A Star Is Born” co-star/director Bradley Cooper won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media, while Lady Gaga’s “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’)?” was named Best Pop Solo Performance. (Lady Gaga and Cooper’s soundtrack to “A Star Is Born” was released on October 5, 2018, so it will be eligible for the 2020 Grammy Awards.) Cooper did not attend the Grammys because he was at the BAFTA Awards in London, where “A Star Is Born” won the prize for Best Original Music.

Brandi Carlile also won three Grammys: She dominated the American roots music category by winning all three Grammys that she was nominated for in that field this year. Other female Grammy winners were Dua Lipa, who won Best New Artist, as well as Best Dance Recording (for “Electricity” with Silk City’s Mark Ronson and Diplo). Tori Kelly took the top Grammy prizes for song and album in the gospel category, while Lauren Daigle did the same in the contemporary Christian category. Meanwhile, H.E.R. won the prizes for Best R&B Performance (for “Best Part” featuring Daniel Caesar) and Best R&B Album, for her self-titled EP.

One female Grammy winner who didn’t attend the show was Ariana Grande, who canceled her appearance at the Grammys this year because of reported dispute over which songs she could perform: Her “Sweetnener” album won Best Pop Vocal Album, which is Grande’s first Grammy Award.

After a brief, cheerful introduction by Keys, the show opened with Keys joined on stage by Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Michelle Obama and Jennifer Lopez, with each of the women giving short speeches about what music means to them.

Kendrick Lamar, who had the most nominations (eight) heading into the ceremony, was nominated for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack, but he ended up with one Grammy win: “King’s Dead” won the prize for Best Rap Performance for Lamar, Jay Rock, Future and James Blake. The award had a rare voting tie this year: Anderson .Paak’s “Bubblin” also won the Grammy in this category.

Drake had seven nominations and ended up with one Grammy: Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan.” Drake and Lamar reportedly declined invitations to perform at the Grammys this year. Drake attended the ceremony, but Lamar did not.

Performers at the 2019 Grammys included Lady Gaga, Keys, Janelle Monáe, Dan + Shay, H.E.R., Musgraves, Cardi B, Shawn Mendes and Carlile. Diana Ross celebrated her 75th birthday with a “Diamond Diana” performance medley of some of her hit songs.

The Grammys are known for having unique tributes and collaborations. This year the on-stage team-ups included Camila Cabello with Ricky Martin, Youg Thug and J Balvin; Miley Cyrus with Mendes; Dua Lipa with St. Vincent; Travis Scott with members of Earth, Wind & Fire; and Post Malone with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

A tribute to the late Aretha Franklin featured Yolanda Adams, Andra Day and Fantasia doing a medley of Franklin’s hits.

Dolly Parton (MusiCares’ 2019 Person of the Year) participated in a tribute to her that included Musgraves, Katy Perry, Maren Morris, Cyrus and Little Big Town performing a medley of Parton hits.

A tribute to Motown’s 60th anniversary featured Jennifer Lopez, Smokey Robinson, Ne-Yo and Keys performing a medley of Motown hits.

Chloe x Halle performed a tribute to the late Donny Hathaway, one of this year’s recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.

The Grammy ceremony had some time-management problems. The show ran about 10 minutes over its scheduled time (it had been scheduled to run from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET), and several winners’ speeches were cut off by music playing over them. In Dua Lipa’s case, her microphone was completely shut off as the telecast quickly switched to a commercial.

2019 Grammy Awards: Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa, tributes to Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton added to lineup

Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Chloe x Halle and tributes to Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton have been added to the performing lineup at the 61st Grammy Awards, which will take place at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on February 10, 2019. As previously announced, Alicia Keys is hosting the show, which will have its U.S. telecast on CBS.

Previously announced artists include Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Dan + Shay, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Diana Ross.

Lady Gaga will perform “Shallow” (from the 2018 “A Star is Born” movie soundtrack) with Mark Ronson, who wrote “Shallow” with Lady Gaga, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. “Shallow” is nominated for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The Grammy Awards take place on the same night as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, where Lady Gaga is nominated for Best Actress and Best  Music for “A Star Is Born.” By choosing to attend the Grammys instead, it’s clear that Lady Gaga is going to the ceremony where she thinks she has the better chance of winning more awards.

Meanwhile, on-stage collaborations at the 2019 Grammys have been announced: Cabello will be joined by J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval for her performance. Female singers Dua Lipa and St. Vincent will team up for their Grammy performance.

One artist who won’t be performing at the Grammys this year is Ariana Grande, who is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album (“Sweetener”) and Best Pop Solo Performance (“God Is a Woman”). According to Variety, Grande canceled her performance and will not be attending the show because of a dispute over which songs she could sing at the Grammys. She had been set to do a medley of two songs, and reportedly had to fight the show’s producers to perform her current single “7 Rings,” but ultimately quit when the producers would not allow her to choose the second song.

The 61st Grammy Awards show is produced by AEG Ehrlich Ventures for the Recording Academy. Ken Ehrlich is executive producer, Ben Winston is executive producer, Louis J. Horvitz is director, Chantel Sausedo is the producer, and David Wild and Ehrlich are the writers.

In 2018, the Recording Academy received an enormous amount of backlash for having a male-dominated Grammy ceremony, which led to the social-media hashtag #GrammysSoMale. That year, the overwhelming number of Grammy nominees and winners were male, and the only artist with an Album of the Year nomination who was not invited to perform solo on the show was female singer Lorde. (Lorde attended the ceremony but did not perform.) In 2019, the Recording Academy has taken big steps to have more women on the Grammys stage. Keys is one of the few women who have hosted the Grammy ceremony. And three of the biggest tributes at the 2019 Grammys will be to women, while prominent on-stage collaborations will feature women.

Diva Tributes

Franklin, who died in of pancreatic cancer in August 2018, will have a special tribute at the Grammy Awards with performances by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day. A separate all-star tribute to Franklin (“Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul”) will take place on January 13 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Tyler Perry is hosting that separate tribute concert, which will include performances by Adams, Shirley Caesar, Alessia Cara, Kelly Clarkson, Common, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Keys, John Legend, Patti LaBelle, BeBe Winans, Carlile, Chloe x Halle, H.E.R., Monáe and SZA. CBS will televise the concert on March 10, 2019.

Parton, who is MusiCares’ 2019 Person of the Year, will perform a song from the “Dumplin'” movie soundtrack. As part of the Grammy Awards tribute, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Musgraves and Perry will perform some of Parton’s songs. This will be the second tribute to Parton in two days. On February 8, Parton’s MusiCares Person of the Year concert (which is not televised) will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with performances by Parton, Cyrus, Perry, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Leon Bridges, Lauren Daigle, Norah Jones, Mendes, Pink, Ronson, Chris Stapleton, Vince Gill, Don Henley, Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Linda Perry and Mavis Staples.

As previously reported, Ross is celebrating her 75th birthday this year with a “Diamond Diana” performance at the Grammys. The performance is expected to be a medley of some of her hit songs. Ross will also be a performer at “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration,” an all-star concert for Motown’s 60th anniversary that will be filmed for CBS at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on January 12, 2019. Other “Motown 60” performers include Smokey Robinson, Boyz II Men, Chloe x Halle, Ciara, Lamont Dozier, Fantasia, Brian & Eddie Holland, Thelma Houston, Tori Kelly, John Legend, Little Big Town, Ne-Yo, Pentatonix, Martha Reeves, Valerie Simpson, Mickey Stevenson, Meghan Trainor and Stevie Wonder.  Cedric the Entertainer is hosting the show, which CBS will premiere on April 21.

Performers Nominated for Grammys This Year

It’s a tradition for most of the artists performing at a Grammy Awards ceremony are those who are nominated for Grammys that year. Most of the aforementioned artists have Grammy nominations in 2019. Cabello, Carlile and Mendes will be performing at the Grammy Awards for the first time.

Balvin is up for Record Of The Year for “I Like It,” his collaboration with Cardi B and Bad Bunny.

Cabello’s Grammy nominations this year are for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Havana [Live]” and Best Pop Vocal Album for her solo debut album, “Camila.” Cabello is a former member of Fifth Harmony.

Cardi B has five Grammy nominations this year. Her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” is up for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album; “Girls Like You,” her her hit collaboration with Maroon 5, is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance; her song “I Like It” is one of the contenders for Record of the Year; and her song “Be Careful” is up for Best Rap Performance.

Carlile is nominated for six Grammys: Her song “The Joke” is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song, while her album “By the Way, I Forgive You” is a contender for Album of the Year and Best Americana Album.

Chloe x Halle are nominated for Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album (for “The Kids Are Alright”).

Dan + Shay’s “Tequila” is nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

H.E.R. is one of the nominees for Best New Artist, while her self-titled album is up for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album. She also nominated for Best R&B Performance (for “Best Part”) and Best R&B Song (for “Focus”).

Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media, while her song “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)” is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance.

Lipa is nominated for Best Dance Recording (for “Electricity”) and Best New Artist.

Diana Ross, Miley Cyrus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Brandi Carlile and H.E.R. have been added to the performing lineup at the 61st Grammy Awards, which will take place at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on February 10, 2019. Her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” is up for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album; “Girls Like You,” her her hit collaboration with Maroon 5, is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance; her song “I Like It” is one of the contenders for Record of the Year; and her song “Be Careful” is  up for Best Rap Performance.

Carlile is nominated for six Grammys: Her song “The Joke” is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song, while her album “By the Way, I Forgive You” is a contender for Album of the Year and Best Americana Album.

Dan + Shay’s “Tequila” is nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

H.E.R. is one of the nominees for Best New Artist, while her self-titled album is up for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album. She also nominated for Best R&B Performance (for “Best Part”) and Best R&B Song (for “Focus”).

Lipa is nominated for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.”

Malone has four Grammy nominations: Album of the Year (for “Beerbongs & Bentleys“); his “Better Now” single is up for Best Pop Solo Performance; and his “Rockstar” collaboration with 21 Savage is nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance.

Mendes’ self titled album is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, while his single “In My Blood” is a contender for Song of the Year.

Monáe has two Grammy nominations this year: “Dirty Computer” is up for Album of the Year, while she has a Best Music Video nod for “PYNK.”

Musgraves received four Grammy nominations this year:  “Golden Hour” is up for Album of the Year and Best Country Album; “Butterflies” is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance; and “Space Cowboy” is a contender for Best Country Song.
