Food Network debuts ‘Tournament of Champions,’ hosted by Guy Fieri

January 23, 2020

The following is a press release from Food Network:

It’s madness on Food Network this March as Guy Fieri hosts and executive produces an all new culinary competition where 16 of the nation’s most celebrated chefs face-off on “Tournament of Champions,” premiering on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at 10pm with a supersized 90-minute episode stuffed with edge-of-your-seat action. During the five-part tournament, the chefs’ skills will be pushed to the limit, as they go head-to-head in a single elimination bracket-style competition, where a randomizer machine determines the protein, produce, equipment, cooking style, and time for each of the cook-offs. The pressure is on and emotions are high throughout this unpredictable tournament, as the elite chefs enter this blind competition not knowing who their opponents will be, or what cooking challenges they will face. The intensity increases in each sudden-death each round of the tournament as the coveted spots decrease from 16 to eight in the second round, then to four, until there are only two chefs in the final round.

This past October, Guy issued a call to action on social media for fans to nominate their favorite chefs they thought deserved to earn a coveted challenger spot for an East Coast vs. West Coast tournament, and the fans responded. The final chefs representing the East Coast are: Maneet Chauhan, Rocco DiSpirito, Alex Guarnaschelli, Elizabeth Falkner, Darnell Ferguson, Amanda Freitag, Marc Murphy and Christian Petroni. The chefs showing off their chops from the West Coast are: Richard Blais, Eric Greenspan, Antonia Lofaso, Beau Macmillan, Jet Tila, Marcel Vigneron, Michael Voltaggio, and Brooke Williamson. Today, the seeds and first-round brackets of the tournament will be unveiled on Food Network’s Twitter page. Beginning on February 14th, for the first time ever, viewers will be able to build their own bracket for a chance to track their scores as the competition unfolds, unlock exclusive content, and win prizes throughout the season.

“‘Tournament of Champions’ showcases cooking as a sport with difficult sudden-death challenges and unexpected match ups as each round is determined by the course of the competition,” said Courtney White, President, Food Network. “Our cameras rolled on all the action, from the competition floor to back stage and behind the scenes, capturing the tension, deliberation, elation and frustration as bracket victors moved on while others faced elimination.”

“The NFL has the Super Bowl, MLB has the World Series, NBA has The Finals. And now Food Network has ‘Tournament of Champions’ – the ultimate culinary championship to establish once and for all, who rules America’s kitchen,” said Guy Fieri.

It’s a high stakes competition unlike any before. Simon Majumdar and Justin Warner deliver real time play-by-play as all the action unfolds in front of a live audience and continues backstage while the competitors mull over their work while listening in on the judges’ deliberation. Deciding who advances in each round is a rotating panel of expert judges including, Michelle Bernstein, Traci Des Jardin, Marcus Samuelsson, Nancy Silverton, Curtis Stone, Ming Tsai, and Jonathan Waxman. Unexpected challenges, major upsets and surprises fill this tournament, which concludes with an extended 90-minute episode on Wednesday, April 1st at 10pm. Only one chef will emerge as the champion!

Fans can head to www.FoodNetwork.com/TournamentOfChampions for videos with Guy, taste test challenges with the judges and food games with competitors, as well as exclusive Q&As. From February 14 – March 1, viewers can head to Food Network’s Twitter to complete their own bracket for the chance to win unique prizes, and use #TournamentOfChampions to track the action week-to-week.

Guy Fieri looks for a hit Food Network road show in ‘Guy’s Big Project’

Guy Fieri has visited thousands of restaurants on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” literally putting food-road shows on the map. Now, Guy is searching for Food Network’s next big culinary-travel series. After receiving and sorting through thousands of submissions from hopeful hosts with promising concepts, Guy and his team of food and television experts narrowed it down to a final group of prospects that will vie to have their idea developed into a show on “Guy’s Big Project.” The six-episode journey begins on Sunday, November 5 at 9pm ET/PT and documents every twist and turn as the prospects move from initial pitch through development to network review, to the ultimate end goal – the premiere of a new show on Food Network.

“Over a decade ago I was given a chance that I could never have dreamed of on Food Network Star, and now I’m honored to have the opportunity to help make someone else’s dream a reality,” said Fieri. “As a producer, I know what it takes to get a show off the ground, and we will see if these prospects have the passion and skills needed, because a great idea is just the first step.”

“’Guy’s Big Project’ invites viewers behind-the-scenes to see how a series goes from a passionate idea to a reality on-air,” said Courtney White, Senior Vice President Programming, Scripps Networks Interactive. “Guy’s betting on not only identifying the next big idea for the network, but he’s also committed to doing everything needed to help the prospects succeed.”

Guy and his team of experts including Food Network’s Alex Guarnaschelli and veteran television producer Mark Dissin, are taking the most promising prospects out on the road to see who has what it takes to be a success. The journey begins with the finalists picking a restaurant that best represents them and their show idea, where they film a pitch video to convey what their show would be about. Then, the pressure heats up as they whip up a meal in Guy’s personal kitchen that embodies their idea. One prospect will find the feedback hard to chew and will be sent home.

As the season progresses, the prospects are put through the paces by Guy and his team, learning that there is a lot more to hosting a food-television show than a passion for food and cooking skills.  From describing each bite of food in order to convey the flavors, aromas and textures, to engaging the audience while eating and interviewing a wide variety of chefs, there is a lot to digest especially when your hopes and dreams are on the line.

On the finale on Sunday, December 10th at 9pm ET/PT, the remaining prospects each shoot a pilot employing all the skills they learned from the previous weeks. After submitting their tapes to the network, they must wait to hear the decision. Immediately following the finale, at 10pm ET/PT, viewers will find out who made the cut as they get a sneak peek of the winner’s series!

The prospects include: Mark Anderson (Boise, Idaho) together with Ryan Fey (Los Angeles, California), Zane Caplansky (Toronto, Canada), Sharon Damante (Napa, California) together with Sherri Williams (Crestview, Florida), Christian Gill (Cincinnati, Ohio), Lindsay Greene (Atlanta, Georgia), Rashad Jones (Ocala, Florida), Dariany Santana (Kenilworth, New Jersey), and Vincenzo Vaccaro (Astoria, New York).

Fans can get an insider’s look at the making of “Guy’s Big Project” with behind-the-scenes photos of Guy and the prospects, as well as bonus videos and recipes inspired by the show at FoodNetwork.com/GuysBigProject. To join the conversation on social media use #GuysBigProject.

You have followed their careers, read their cookbooks, and watched them on TV, and beginning on Sunday, August 20 at 8pm ET/PT, you will watch these celebrity chefs compete against each other in a no-holds-barred tournament on “Guy’s Grocery Games: Superstars.” In this thrilling five-week tournament, Guy Fieri will give eight of America’s superstar chefs the chance to win $40,000 for their favorite charity. But first, they must battle each other in some of the most twisted games the Flavortown Market has ever seen!

Rocco DiSpirito, Elizabeth Faulkner, Tregaye Fraser, Alex Guarnaschelli, Antonia Lofaso, Brian Malarkey, Marcel Vigneron and Justin Warner go head-to-head in this tournament to see whose skills have game. Each week the chefs will be put to the test in the grocery store aisles, and the top chefs will automatically move on in the competition, while the bottom contestants will face off in a redemption round. Each week, one chef will check out of the competition, while the others stay for the chance to earn big money for charity.

Fans can head to FoodNetwork.com/GroceryGames to relive the top moments of the tournament, test their supermarket trivia smarts, and collect shopping and cooking tips from the judges. Plus, they can also join the conversation using #GroceryGames.

Episodes include

Premiering Sunday, August 20 at 8pm

“Superstars Tournament Part 1”

First, the Superstars confront every shopper’s mortal enemy, the Express Lane! But since they’re the best, Guy Fieri gives them an extreme limitation, four ingredients or less, to make their ‘Best Italian Dish.’ The bottom two chefs must go head-to-head in the single-elimination Redemption Round, making a ‘Seafood Feast’ using one ingredient from each and every aisle. In the end, one chef exits while the others stay alive in this five-part tournament that will earn one chef big money for charity!

Judges: Troy Johnson, Carl Ruiz, Aarti Sequeira

Premiering Sunday, August 27 at 8pm

“Superstars Tournament Part 2”

This week’s theme is: Budget Battle Royale! The seven remaining celebrity chefs are given $36.01 each to buy all their groceries for the night. Should they spend it all on the initial ‘Taco Combo’ challenge, or reserve some money in case they must cook again in the Redemption Round? The three bottom chefs are forced to duke it out for survival by making a ‘Decadent Dessert’ with whatever money they have left. In the end, one chef goes home and six move one step closer to winning $40,000 for charity.

Judges: Eric Greenspan, Troy Johnson, Aarti Sequeira

Premiering Sunday, September 3 at 8pm

“Superstars Tournament Part 3”

The remaining six chefs are all given the same grocery list. But in a surprising twist, they must compete in 3 one-on-one battles to see which opponent makes the best breakfast, lunch or dinner. The winners of these match-ups are safe until next week’s competition. But the three that get edged out, head into the Redemption Round where they must flip the ingredients in tiramisu into an ‘Elegant Entrée.’ Which two will get another shot at becoming a champion for charity and rejoin their peers for the semi-finals of the tournament?

Judges: Troy Johnson, Aaron May, Aarti Sequeira

Premiering Sunday, September 10 at 8pm

“Superstars Tournament Part 4”

It’s the semi-finals and Guy Fieri has devised two shocking shopping cart games for the remaining five celebrity chefs. First, they must search the store to discover where he has hidden their personal carts, only to find that they must make their best ‘Burger and Fries’ featuring the bizarre ingredient Guy dropped in each one. The winner gets an automatic pass to the finale, while the bottom four must fight for redemption by making their ‘Cheesiest Dish.’ But before they can cook, Guy hits them with a totally new twist: a four-way cart swap!

Judges: Troy Johnson, Carl Ruiz, Aarti Sequeira

Premiering Sunday, September 17 at 8pm

“Superstars Tournament Part 5”

The final four celebrity chefs are all vying to become the champion. But first, they must face Guy Fieri’s most diabolical challenge yet: The Double Wheel O’ Games. That’s right, two wheels-of-chance featuring Guy’s toughest games. That means they must play not one, but two extreme grocery games in each round as they attempt to prepare their ‘Best Fried Dish’ and a ‘High End Dish.’ The final two culinary giants must make their ‘Signature Dish’ during two more treacherous games. Who will be the Superstar champion and win $40,000 for their charity?

Judges: Troy Johnson, Aarti Sequeira, Jet Tila

They’ll pit stop for great food and big adventure at iconic locations and encounter some crazy characters too. Along the way from their home in California to Florida’s soft-sand beaches, they will catch up with some familiar Triple-D chefs and meet some new faces whipping up unique eats. Adding more flavor to this trip, they will embark on local adventures including a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, connecting with nature at a wildlife preserve in Flagstaff, Arizona, and rafting in the waters of the Colorado River. Plus, the fun continues with a visit to the Alamo, a special dinner for troops in San Antonio, a creole crawfish boil in New Orleans, fresh oysters in Alabama, and lots of RV-side campfire feasts.

First stop on the road trip is Lake Tahoe, where Guy and his family fuel up for a day of mountain biking with some decadent Belgian waffles. They also check out American ingenuity at the Hoover Dam, before heading to Guy’s restaurant in Nevada for traditional Mexican mole and homemade salsa. Next, things heat up in Flagstaff, Arizona at the local Chile Festival with spicy red and green chiles. But not to worry, because a big glass of mead brewed with local wildflower honey helps to cool things off before they hit the road for more!
