Culture Representation: Taking place in Las Vegas, the dramatic film “The Last Showgirl” features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few Asians) representing the working-class and middle-class.
Culture Clash: A 57-year-old showgirl dancer has to come to terms with losing her longtime job in a profession that values youth, as she tries to repair her relationship with her estranged adult daughter.
Culture Audience: “The Last Showgirl” will appeal primarily to people who are fans f the movie’s headliners and dramas about people going through a mid-life crisis.
“The Last Showgirl” is a nearly perfect showcase for Pamela Anderson as a showgirl dancer grappling with ageism, sexism and parenting regrets, as her long-running job is about to end. This drama realistically depicts an entertainer’s mid-life crisis. “The Last Showgirl” is not without flaws, but Anderson proves to be ideal for the starring role. The movie is also a harsh reality check of how the definition of “sexy” is more likely to have an expiration date for women than for men.
Directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten, “The Last Showgirl” had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie takes place and was filmed on location in Las Vegas. “The Last Showgirl” would make a great double feature with the 1995 camp classic “Showgirls” because “The Last Showgirl” portrays what happens to a showgirl who got her start in the 1990s, and has defied the odds by staying in the same production for almost 30 years.
In the “The Last Showgirl,” Anderson portrays Shelly, a 57-year-old showgirl who used to be the star attraction at Le Razzle Dazzle, a long-running Las Vegas production that features topless female dancers. Shelly, who is friendly but somewhat flaky, loves her showgirl job more than anything else in her life. Le Razzle Dazzle likes to think it’s inspired by French cabaret shows at Moulin Rouge, but it’s really a gawdy and glitzy Las Vegas show. As Shelly got older, her place on stage in Le Razzle Dazzle went from performing in the center to being in the background.
Shelly’s life has revolved around Le Razzle Dazzle, ever since she joined the show in the 1990s. More recently, the number of the show’s performances during the week have been reduced to make way for a tiger act. Le Razzle Dazzle stage manager Eddie (played by Dave Bautista), who has a gruff but caring personality, announces early in the story that Le Razzle Dazzle will soon permanently close because the venue owner wants the tiger act to take over for the entire week. Shelly is naturally devastated because she knows the chances are almost next to nothing that she can get a similar job somewhere else.
“The Last Showgirl” depicts the final days before Le Razzle Dazzle closes. Shelly has become close to two of the dancers who are young enough to be her daughter: Mary-Anne (played by Brenda Song) is outspoken and independent. Jodie (played by Kiernan Shipka) is ambitious but emotionally vulnerable. Mary-Anne and especially Jodie see Shelly and Eddie as surrogate parents.
In a conversation with Jodie, Shelly mentions that she was married for about two years to a man who didn’t like living in Las Vegas. He moved to New York and met someone else, so that was the end of the marriage. Shelly has never remarried, and the movie implies that Shelly hasn’t been unlucky in love for a very long time, probably because she hasn’t found someone who can handle her passion for her job.
The man whom Shelly is closest to at this time in her life is Eddie, who is also a workaholic. Unlike Shelly, Eddie isn’t panicking about Le Razzle Dazzle ending because he’s been asked by the venue owner to stay on as the stage manager for the tiger show. There are hints that Shelly is attracted to Eddie. When she asks him to dinner, she shows up in a sexy beige sequined dress. Eddie’s response: “You look really beautiful—even covered up.”
Shelly has a young adult daughter named Hannah (played by Billie Lourd), who often felt neglected by Shelly when Hannah was a child. Shelly eventually let underage Hannah live with one of Shelly’s married friends, who raised Hannah for the rest of Hannah’s childhood. And where is Hannah’s biological father? That question is answered in the movie.
“The Last Showgirl” has scenes of Shelly, Jodie and Mary-Anne getting ready for performances. But some of the most impactful scenes are between Shelly and Hannah, who arrives for a visit from Tucson, Arizona, where she will soon graduate from college with a major in photography. Shelly and Hannah haven’t seen each other in a year.
The raw feelings and tension between this mother and daughter are examples of the collateral damage that has accumulated because of Shelly’s past choices as a parent. But there are also tender scenes between Shelly and Hannah, such as when Shelly encourages Hannah to pursue a career doing something that Hannah loves, not what other people expect Hannah to do. Hannah admits to Shelly that she’s not a fan of Le Razzle Dazzle.
Jamie Lee Curtis has a small supporting role as Annie, a tough-talking cocktail waitress at the venue. Annie used to be a showgirl for Le Razzle Dazzle from 1987 to 1999. Although Annie doesn’t like to admit it, she misses being on stage. A memorable scene in the movie is when Annie spontaneously gets on stage while in her cocktail waitress uniform and dances to Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
Curtis stands out in the movie because she somewhat over-acts and looks like she wants to steal all the scenes where she appears. Lourd also stands out for different reasons, because her effective performance as Hannah (who has mixed feelings about Shelly) is more about being a scene partner rather than a scene stealer. Bautista, Song and Shipka also capably handle their roles, but their characters in the movie don’t have enough development or insight into who Eddie, Mary-Anne and Jodie are outside of their jobs.
“The Last Showgirl” begins with a scene of Shelly auditioning to be a dancer somewhere, and this scene is revisited with more information later in the movie. It’s revealed that this audition took place after Shelly found out that Le Razzle Dazzle was closing. Shelly auditions to the 1982 Pat Benatar song “Shadows of the Night.” And the feedback she gets from the rude director (played by Jason Schwartzman) becomes a turning point for Shelly.
Anderson brings a lot of emotional authenticity to this role of Shelly, perhaps because she’s lived the experience of becoming famous as a sex symbol dealing with skepticism about her talents as an entertainer. (For “The Last Showgirl,” Anderson received a 2025 Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.) Shelly doesn’t think Le Razzle Dazzle is a tacky nudie show. “This is breasts and rhinestones and joy!” Shelly says backstage in exasperation after experiencing a small and disinterested audience.
But a more telling moment in the movie is when Shelly describes not how she wants audiences to feel when watching Le Razzle Dazzle but how she feels when she’s performing in the show: “I love the show. I feel so good about myself in the show … The costumes, the set, being bathed in that light, night after night. Feeling seen, feeling, beautiful. And I can’t imagine my life without it.”
“The Last Showgirl” has some pacing issues. And some of the film tends to be a bit rambling. But the strength of the movie is rooted in Anderson’s compelling portrayal of someone who centered her life around a job that requires sex appeal. And now that her job is ending, and she’s at an age when women are considered “not as sexy” as younger women, she wonders what kind of life she will have. The movie doesn’t pretend to have the answers about what Shelly should or should not do next. However, “The Last Showgirl” can be both a cautionary tale and an inspiration for how to be a showbiz survivor.
Roadside Attractions released “The Last Showgirl” in Los Angeles on December 13, 2024, with an expansion to more U.S. cities on January 10, 2025.

Doja Cat is the leading female finalist with 14 categories including Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and Top Hot 100 Artist. Her album “Planet Her” is up for two awards, while her song “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA is up for Top 100 Song and Top Collaboration, as well as in the new Top Viral song category.
First-time finalist Olivia Rodrigo bows with recognition as a finalist in 13 categories including Top Artist, Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, and Top Hot 100 Artist. Her album “SOUR” is a finalist for Top Billboard 200 Album and her song “good 4 u” is a finalist in four categories.
The most decorated BBMA artist of all time, Drake, who holds the record with 29 wins, is up for 11 categories including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist and Top Hot 100 Artist. He’s up for the Billboard Album 200 category for “Certified Lover Boy,” along with multiple song nods.
The most decorated female BBMA artist of all time, Taylor Swift, had another banner year and is a finalist in seven categories; with her 25 previous wins, she could surpass Drake for most wins of all-time if she wins at least five this year. She’s up for Top Artist and Top Female Artist, as well as for two albums in the Top Country Album category for “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” and “Red (Taylor’s Version).”
Justin Bieber, the third most decorated BBMA artist with 21 previous wins, also lands amongst the top finalists as he is up for 13 categories this year including Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, and the new Top Billboard Global 200 Artist category.

The related new categories are Top Billboard Global 200 Artist, Top Billboard Global Excluding U.S. Artist, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Billboard Global Excluding U.S. Song. Ed Sheeran is a finalist in all four new global categories for artist and his song “Bad Habits,” while The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber’s “STAY” and The Weeknd & Ariana Grande’s “Save Your Tears” are represented in both new global song categories. Olivia Rodrigo and The Weeknd are finalists across both new global artist categories.

Directed by Anthony Guidubaldi and Keith Strausbaugh
Culture Representation: Taking place in Las Vegas in 2019, the mockumentary comedy “Marathon” features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few African Americans) representing the working-class and middle-class.
Culture Clash: On the 15th anniversary of a small-time marathon in Las Vegas, various quirky marathon participants endure slapstick-style obstacles and challenges during their training and during the marathon itself.
Culture Audience: “Marathon” will appeal primarily to people who like Christopher Guest-inspired mockumentaries that skewer people who obsess over “winning” or “being No. 1.”
“Marathon” is a mockumentary in the best sense of the word. It’s a wacky yet slyly comedic parody of a fictional obscure running marathon, the people who obsessively train for this race, and the marathon’s smarmy founder who has all the sincerity of a snake oil salesman. This movie is an example of how a mockumentary can be entertaining with the right screenplay, direction and cast. There’s plenty of absurdity but also plenty of truths about society and certain lengths that people will go to to boost their egos.
Written and directed by Anthony Guidubaldi and Keith Strausbaugh, “Marathon” benefits from having cast members who are talented in improvisational comedy. The scenes don’t seem over-rehearsed, because in order for a mockumentary to succeed, it has to look like the actors have some level of spontaneity, even if they’re reading lines from a script. What also makes “Marathon” better than the average mockumentary is that it easily could’ve relied on stereotypical caricatures, but each character in the movie has just enough quirkiness to make their personalities unique.
This is a mockumentary where the “documentary director” doesn’t try to be the star of the movie too. Viewers won’t even find out the director’s name for this low-budget “documentary” that’s chronicling these marathon-related antics, starting from three months before the marathon. Except for two or three scenes, the “documentary film crew” is not seen on screen. And when anyone from the “film crew” is on screen, it’s very brief. It’s a wise choice because putting too much of the “behind the scenes” crew on screen would be distracting to the overall story.
“Marathon,” which takes place in 2019 in Las Vegas, focuses on “five amateur runners as they trained for a life-changing event,” according the movie’s intro. It might not actually be a life-changing event, but what they’re training for is the Devil’s Canyon Marathon. You know right from the start that this 26.2-mile marathon is a disaster waiting to happen because it takes place in a desert. And it’s questionable if the marathon really has a legal permit to take place.
The founder/director of the marathon is actually a shoe salesman for his day job. His name is Ed Clap (played by Jimmy Slonina), who is a combination of nerdy and shady. Most of his interview footage takes place in his cluttered office. He spends the majority of his interview over-hyping the marathon and giving a questionable version of the marathon’s history.
The running gag with Ed is that he likes to boast about what an amazing event the Devil’s Canyon Marathon is (it’s celebrating its 15th anniversary), but he lets certain details slip that prove the marathon is really a sloppy sham. He mentions that every time he goes to city hall to renew the permit, the office workers shut down the office when they see him coming. Ed wonders aloud in a clueless way if he’s been banned from city hall.
Ed also brags about the Devil’s Canyon Marathon merchandise, which he repeatedly says that he designed himself. He’s particularly proud of the T-shirt that reads, “I Ran With the Devil.” Ed comments on the shirt, “We got into some trouble with some groups who thought it promoted satanism. But you know what? I think we invite all people to run.”
He pauses slightly and adds, “We do have a few satanists run in the marathon. They’re very nice people.” And that’s when Ed notices that he ordered all the shirts in just one size: XXL. It won’t be the only dimwitted mistake that he makes for this marathon.
The five aspiring marathon runners spotlighted in the movie all are in their late 20s to mid-30s. They are:
Ryan O’Brien (played by Andrew Hansen), an arrogant realtor who thinks he’s the alpha male of everything, but the only thing he seems to be good at is making a fool out of himself.
Jenna Kowalski (played by Natalie Sullivan), a neurotic radiologist whose goal is to break the Guinness world record for the fastest marathon time while dressed as a fruit, so she dresses like a banana during her training and during the marathon.
Shareef Washington (played by Tavius Cortez), an African American accountant who keeps getting racially profiled by white cops when he’s running outside.
Abby Dozier (played by Anais Thomassian), a former eighth grade teacher who took a year off from marathon training to have her son Miles (her first child), and she wants to prove that she can get back into marathon running after giving birth.
Emilou Paunch (played by Kimia Behpoornia), a law firm’s administrative assistant who gives up early on participating in the marathon when she finds out it’s 26.2 miles, so she decides the only “marathon” she’ll do is binge-watching TV while eating junk food and smoking marijuana.
Not surprisingly, a few of the marathoners get injured. And aside from physical injuries, egos get bruised. One of the situations that causes hurt feelings is when a new marathon contestant suddenly comes on the scene. Jenna is very unhappy at first about it because she thinks this new contestant is an interloper who’s there to steal her thunder and possibly try to break the same Guinness world record.
As a documentary producer (played by Darren Pitura) explains to Jenna, the documentarians found her story so compelling, they decided to bring someone else into the documentary who will also compete in the marathon in a banana costume. He’s a flaky actor named Ben Duffy (played by Roberto Raad), who’s just there for the paycheck. However, Ben and Jenna unexpectedly become attracted to each other when they’re forced to spend time together and say scripted conversations for the documentary.
There’s another motive for the documentary filmmakers to bring a second person dressed as a banana in the marathon, besides to cause drama. The agricultural corporation Dole has signed on to sponsor the film. Therefore, as Ben says, he’s not just an actor, he’s “product placement.” (And in case anyone is wondering, Dole really did pay for product placement in “Marathon,” which makes it a meta joke for the film.)
In addition to showing how these marathoners train, the documentary reveals aspects of the marathoners’ personal lives. Ryan is a divorcé who’s still bitter about the end of his two-year marriage (he says that his ex-wife cheated on him), and he admits that he hasn’t really dated anyone in the past two years because he wants to focus on himself. Later, he becomes enraged when he finds out that the film crew interviewed his ex-wife, who is shown in shadows and with her voice disguised, as if she’s afraid of her identity being exposed.
Ryan is so full of himself that he says that he’s always a “winner” in life. A constant joke in the movie is how Ryan is on such an ego trip that he starts to boss around the camera operator/cinematographer, who’s not seen on camera and only identified as Jeff (played by Jeff Topper). At one point, Ryan acts as if he’s in an athletic competition with Jeff. He mocks and insults Jeff when the camera operator can’t seem to keep up with Ryan’s running pace.
It’s also revealed in the movie that Ryan is obsessed with entering the Boston Marathon. The most recent time he tried out for the Boston Marathon, he didn’t make the qualifying cut by nine seconds. Ryan comments, “Boston is like the Colosseum [in Rome]. And we’re like the gladiators, out here in these small provinces, hoping to make it to Rome.”
Jenna is very sensitive about being a bachelorette. Maybe that’s because she has a friend like Grace DeWitt (played by Kasey Wilson), who’s interviewed for the film. In her interview, Grace comments that the average marathoner is a 35-year-old man who’s middle-class or upper-class, so Grace thinks being in a marathon is the perfect way for Jenna to meet a potential husband. The movie then cuts to Jenna saying that she’s doing the marathon for herself, not to get a man.
Shareef, who’s a bachelor, has a sibling rivalry with his sister Sequoia Washington (played by Tiffany Luce), who is a more accomplished athlete and doesn’t let Shareef forget it. Shareef comments, “She’s a tri-athlete. I just ‘try’—her words.” Sequoia is shown in the movie to be someone who insults Shareef more than supports him. She thinks he won’t go far in the Devil’s Canyon Marathon. Sequoia describes Shareef as being like a whiny “little baby” and adds: “He can’t finish a marathon. He can’t even tie his own shoes.”
Shareef says of his childhood: “I started running in middle school. It was the only way I could get away from my family, school, life—just my way of coping with myself.” As for being frequently pulled over by white cops when he’s out running, Shareef says with a hint of sarcasm: “Apparently, there are a lot of guys committing crimes in gym shorts with no pockets.” Shareef gets racially profiled by white cops several times throughout the movie, but “Marathon” handles it in a way that’s not offensive to the Black Lives Matter movement because the movie is a satire that makes racist cops look bad.
Abby is sometimes interviewed with her clingy husband Michael Dozier (played by Marc Roberts), who is so nervous about saying the right things that he often ends up saying the wrong things. For example, he tries too hard to come across as enlightened and “politically correct” when it comes to race relations. But then, he gets tongue-tied and stammers when he lets it slip that everyone in his social circle is white.
Emilou, who is literally sitting out this marathon (by watching TV on her couch), dryly says in one of her interviews: “Here’s the secret to running a marathon: Quit early.” She also explains why she wanted to be in the marathon before she changed her mind: “I’m in a rut. Not really a rut, but a ditch—a small ditch.”
Later in the movie, when bachelorette Emilou is in the parking lot of a supermarket, she has a somewhat awkward and surprise reunion with someone she knew in high school: a guy she privately calls “Big Dick Brian” (played by Jeremy Boone). They hug each other after apparently not seeing each other for years, and they exchange phone numbers. The movie shows how Emilou handles if or when Brian will call her.
Several mishaps and misunderstandings ensue in the lead-up to the marathon, which doesn’t start until about 60 minutes into this 82-minute movie. Viewers will get plenty of laughs at how seriously the characters take this marathon when it’s not supposed to be taken seriously at all. Not all of the jokes and gags land well, but there’s more than enough hilarity—thanks to the very amusing performances—to bring this marathon mockumentary over the finish line to be a comedic triumph.
Gravitas Ventures released “Marathon” on digital and VOD on July 6, 2021.

CinemaCon, the National Association of Theatre Owners’ annual convention in Las Vegas, has been cancelled. The event was scheduled to take place from March 30 to April 2, 2020. The cancellation comes at a time when the coronavirus outbreak has negatively affected attendance at movie theaters.
CinemaCon (formerly known as ShoWest) is one of the biggest events for major movie studios to showcase what they expect to be their biggest box-office hits of the year. The stars of the movies attend the event, as well as studio executives, movie-theater executives, vendors and other people connected to the movie industry.
CinemaCon also has a non-competitive award ceremony as part of the event, which announces the award recipients in advance. Some of this year’s CinemaCon award recipients had been announced before the cancellation. They were Michael B. Jordan (CinemaCon Male Star of the Year Award); Carey Mulligan (CinemaCon Award of Excellence in Acting); Glenn Powell (CinemaCon Male Star of Tomorrow Award); and AMC Entertainment president/CEO Adam N. Aron (NATO Marquee Award).
CinemaCon is among the long list of events around the world that have been postponed or cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. In addition, several schools, government offices, community centers and other places have been temporarily closed due to the outbreak.

The following is a press release from Dick Clark Productions and NBC:
NBC and Dick Clark Productions announced today that Kelly Clarkson will return once again to host NBC’s three-hour live telecast of the “2020 Billboard Music Awards” on Wednesday, April 29 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.* This will mark Clarkson’s third time hosting the hugely popular award show after receiving unanimous acclaim as host in 2018 and 2019.
The “2020 Billboard Music Awards” will be broadcast live from Las Vegas and feature the year’s hottest musical acts, unexpected collaborations and buzzworthy moments.
As host, Clarkson has helped create many iconic Billboard Music Awards moments, including unexpected cameos by surprise guests. Her opening performances, where she puts her own vocal spin on the year’s top hits, have become a can’t miss moment on the show and are widely anticipated by fans.
“I’m thrilled to be back with my Billboard family,” Clarkson said. “I love being part of an event that celebrates our greatest artists and entertains our fans. This a night of music that you won’t want to miss!”
Clarkson serves as a coach for season 18 of NBC’s multi-Emmy Award-winning musical competition series “The Voice” and hosts her own daytime program, “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” which was the fall season’s #1 new syndicated show. She is among the most popular artists of this era with total worldwide sales of more than 25 million albums and 40 million singles.
Clarkson is the recipient of an array of awards, including three Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards and one Country Music Assn. Award. She has notched three #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, among 11 top 10’s and 27 total appearances. She has also tallied three #1 albums on the Billboard 200, among eight top 10’s in11 total appearances. Her versatility has also resulted in seven #1 singles on the Dance Club Songs chart; four on both the Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs charts; three on Adult Contemporary; and one on Hot Country Songs.
To date in her career, she has drawn 61 billion in cumulative radio audience and 2.8 billion on-demand U.S. streams and sold 14.6 million albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
The “2019 Billboard Music Awards” averaged a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.0 million viewers, according to “live plus same day” Nielsens, delivering NBC’s best in-season Wednesday in 18-49, excluding Olympics, since 2016. The awards telecast jumped +110% above NBC’s Wednesday season average in the 18-49 demo and was up +1.5 million persons in total viewers to top every Big 4 entertainment telecast over the prior seven weeks in 18-49.
“Billboard Music Awards” nominees and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The awards are based on the chart period of March 23, 2019 through March 14, 2020. Since 1940, the Billboard charts have been the go-to guide for ranking the popularity of artists, songs and albums, and are the ultimate measure of success in music.
The “2020 Billboard Music Awards” is produced by dick clark productions. Barry Adelman, Mark Bracco, Kelly Clarkson, Robert Deaton and Amy Thurlow are executive producers.
