About Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift’s seventh studio album Lover is not only the top-selling album of 2019; it is the highest selling album since reputation was released back in 2017 and broke the record for most simultaneous entries by a female artist in Billboard’s Hot 100 history with all 18 tracks from Lover charting! This is a testament not only to her devoted fans but also to her songwriting prowess. As USA Today said, “Critics are falling in love with Taylor Swift’s latest album Lover.” Rolling Stone hailed, “Lover is a career-topping masterpiece” and “the superstar’s writing is better than it’s ever been” while A.V. Club called Lover, “one of her strongest, most relatable albums to date” and Vulture said, “The old Taylor is back on Lover and the best she’s been in years.”

Swift recently released the title track, “Lover,” with critics raving, “Both aching and achingly pretty, “Lover” effectively transmits its romantic signals by putting the songwriting of Swift — a masterful writer who gets the solo credit here — front and center” (Billboard Magazine) while People Magazine said “Lover” “Might be her most romantic song yet.” Taylor’s socially conscious 2nd single, “You Need To Calm Down,” follows the debut single “ME!,” which broke multiple records to date. With 65.2 million views in 24 hours, Swift now holds YouTube’s most viewed video by any female and solo artist. “ME!” is also the fastest music video to reach 100M views on Vevo (in only 79 hours) and broke the record for the most views in a single day by any artist. In addition to “ME!” and “You Need To Calm Down,” Swift is a ten-time Grammy winner, a singer, songwriter, musician and producer. She is the youngest person in history to win the music industry’s highest honor, the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and is the first female solo artist to win this prestigious award twice. Rolling Stone listed Swift as one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Time magazine featured her on their prestigious 2017 Person of the Year cover, has named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world and included her three times at TIME 100. A Brit and Emmy award winner, Swift is Billboard’s youngest-ever Woman of the Year and the only artist to have been awarded this honor twice. She is the only artist in history to have four consecutive albums sell over one million copies in their week of release (Speak Now, RED, 1989 and reputation) and the only female artist to have six albums each sell at least 500,000 copies in a single week (Fearless, Speak Now, RED, 1989, reputation and Lover). 2019 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS TOP NOMINATED ARTISTS CHART FACTS:
Post Malone

Two-time American Music Award winner Post Malone comes into the 2019 AMAs with a field-leading seven nominations – and it’s no wonder, as he’s chalked up what could be considered his biggest year yet in music. 2019 started off with his third No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)” with Swae Lee, and he followed it up with four more top 10s. Further, his third album, “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” stormed in atop the Billboard 200 chart, giving the artist his second No. 1. Concurrent with the album’s bow at No. 1, all 17 of the set’s songs debuted on the Hot 100 chart.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande, a current six-time American Music Award nominee this year, wasted no time in the past year. The pop superstar’s thank u, next album debuted at No. 1 less than six months after her last album, Sweetener, started at No. 1 – the shortest gap between new No. 1 albums by a female artist since 1975. Further, when thank u, next charged in at No. 1, it broke the record for the largest streaming week ever earned for a pop album, according to Nielsen Music. The three-time AMA winner collected her first two No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with thank u, next’s title track, and its follow-up hit, “7 Rings.”
Billie Eilish

It was a big year on the charts for six-time 2019 American Music Award nominee Billie Eilish. The 17-year old singer-songwriter debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” and logged a smash No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 with the set’s breakout hit “Bad Guy.” “When We All Fall Asleep” has collected more than 2 billion on-demand audio streams for its songs in the U.S., including a half-billion alone for “Bad Guy.” Also impressive: when “Bad Guy” hit No. 1 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart, it followed her previous No. 1, “Bury a Friend,” which made Eilish only the third woman to score multiple No.  1s in the 30-plus year history of the chart.

Lil Nas X

Five-time American Music Award nominee Lil Nas X re-wrote the chart history books in 2019, as his ubiquitous single “Old Town Road” broke the long-standing record for the most weeks at No. 1 in the 60-plus-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Fueled by the runaway popularity of the song’s remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, the song spent 19 weeks at No. 1 on the tally, surpassing the previous record-holders, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” each with 16 weeks at No. 1. But Lil Nas X didn’t stop there – he followed “Old Town” with another top 10 hit, “Panini,” and a debut EP, “7,” which opened at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Taylor Swift

Twenty-three-time American Music Award winner Taylor Swift had another super-sized year on the charts, thanks to the 2019 five-time nominee’s massive album “Lover” and its singles. The set blasted in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, securing the superstar her sixth No. 1 on the list. Further, when it launched at No. 1, it did so with the biggest week earned by an album since her own last release, reputation, in 2017. The “Lover” era kicked off with its first single, “ME!,” featuring Brendon Urie, notching Swift her 23rd top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. She then followed it up with two more top 10s so far, her 24th and 25th total, “You Need to Calm Down” and the album’s title track.

Billy Ray Cyrus

Two-time American Music Award winner Billy Ray Cyrus returned to the top of the Billboard charts in a major way in 2019, thanks to an unlikely collaboration: his teaming with Lil Nas X on a remix of the enormous hit “Old Town Road.” The tune spent a record 19 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and brought 2019 four-time AMA nominee Cyrus back to the chart’s top 10 for the first time since 1992, when his debut hit “Achy Breaky Heart” reached No. 4.

Ella Mai

Four-time American Music Award nominee Ella Mai broke through in mid-2018 with her chart-dominating hit “Boo’d Up,” which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart. The singer-songwriter followed it up with a string of further hits on the list, including “Trip” (No. 1 for 14 weeks) and “Shot Clock” (No. 3). Plus, her self-titled full-length album arrived and spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart, while also hitting No. 5 on the Billboard 200.
Khalid

Khalid made waves on the charts in 2019, as the American Music Award-winner landed his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with “Free Spirit,” and his highest charting single as a lead artist on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Talk” (peaking at No. 3). With Free Spirit, the singer-songwriter also logged the first R&B album to top the Billboard 200 in nearly a year, and scored one of the largest streaming weeks ever for an R&B album, according to Nielsen Music. “Talk” also spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot R&B Songs chart – one of over a dozen top 20-charting hits in 2019 for the current four-time AMA nominee.

2019 Primetime Emmy Awards: ‘Game of Thrones’ wins Best Drama Series; ‘Fleabag’ triumphs in top comedy categories

September 22, 2019

Emmys logo

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards (held at Microsoft Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on September 22, 2019) had plenty of predictable wins but even more surprise victories. Fox had the U.S. telecast of the show, which had no host, and was produced by Don Mischer and Done + Dusted. The HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones” (which debuted in 2011, and had its series finale in 2019), was the leading nominee going into  and predictably repeated its win for Outstanding Drama Series. But “Game of Thrones,” whose final episode received widespread criticism from fans, was shut out of many of the categories that it won in 2018, including the Emmys for writing and directing for a drama series, which went to HBO’s “Succession” and Netflix’s “Ozark,” respectively. The only other Emmy that “Game of Thrones” won at the ceremony was Peter Dinklage’s victory for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Although several “Game of Thrones” actors received Emmy nominations for the show over the years, Dinklage is the only actor who has won Emmy Awards (he’s won four) for “Game of Thrones.”

Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” and its star/showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge also won big, triumphing over widely predicted “Veep” in the categories of Outstanding Comedy Series; Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series; and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. “Fleabag” and “Veep,” just like “Game of Thrones,” had their final seasons in 2019. “Veep” was completely shut out of all the Emmy categories for which it was nominated.

In addition to Waller-Bridge, there were several other first-time Emmy winners, including Billy Porter of “Pose” (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series); Jodie Comer of “Killing Eve” (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series); Julia Garner of “Ozark” (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series); Michelle Williams of “Fosse/Verdon” (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie); and Jharrel Jerome  of “When They See Us” (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie). Porter made Emmy history as the first openly gay man to be nominated for and to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also became the second African American to win in this category.

Repeat winners included Bill Hader of “Barry” (Outstanding Lead Actor in a  Comedy Series”); Alex Borstein of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series); “Saturday Night Live” (Outstanding Variety Series; Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series);  “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” (Outstanding Variety Talk Series; Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series); and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (Outstanding Reality Competition). Tony Shalhoub, who won three Emmys for “Monk,” picked up his fourth Primetime Emmy, this time for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). Shalhoub also has a Daytime Emmy for “The Band’s Visit” performance on the “Today” show.

The HBO’s “Chernobyl” triumphed in the categories of Outstanding Limited Series; Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special; and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special

The 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards (for Emmy technical categories) took place September 14 and September 15 at Microsoft Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. Highlights were televised on September 21 on FXX. A complete list of those winners can be found here.

2019 BET Awards: Tyler Perry, Mary J. Blige to receive special prizes

June 12, 2019

The following is a press release from BET:

BET announces Tyler Perry will be honored with the Ultimate Icon Award, and Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, Oscar-nominated actress and philanthropist Mary J. Blige will be honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 19th annual “BET Awards.” The entertainment powerhouse and business mogul will be presented with the Ultimate Icon Award for his continued cultural impact in entertainment. The 2019 “BET Awards” will air LIVE on Sunday, June 23 at 8pm ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CA on BET.

Tyler Perry, the now world-renowned producer, director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, and author, built his entertainment empire up from meager beginnings. Inspired by a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey, Perry began his career by simply putting his thoughts and life experiences to paper, creating the foundation of his acclaimed catalog of plays, films, television series, and award-winning novels. Taking his iconic character Madea from stage to screen, Perry introduced the world to a “God-fearing, gun-toting, loud-mouthed grandmother”, in 2005’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” He’s since gone on to create numerous successful feature films and scripted series like “House of Payne” and “The Haves and The Have Nots” that bring messages of spiritual hope and down-home humor into homes across the country.

In the fall of 2006, Perry opened a 200,000 square foot studio in Atlanta which during its operation, was home to over 15 films and 800 episodes of Perry’s five television series. In 2015, Tyler Perry expanded and opened a state-of-the-art film and television studio on the historic grounds of the former Fort McPherson army base.  The new 330-acre campus is one of the largest production studios in the country boasting 40 buildings on the national register of historic places, 11 purpose-build sound stages, 200 acres of green space and an expansive backlot.  His unique brand of inspirational entertainment has authentically spoken to and impacted black culture and helped shape the future of black entertainment.

With a career of landmark achievements including eight multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards (plus a staggering 32 nominations), two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a SAG nomination, Mary J. Blige has remained a figure of inspiration, transformation and empowerment making her one of the defining voices of the contemporary music era and cemented herself as a global superstar. And in the ensuing years, the singer/songwriter has attracted an intensely loyal fan base—responsible for propelling worldwide sales of more than 50 million albums. She began moving people with her soulful voice at the age of 18 when she became Uptown Records youngest and first female artist. Over the years, Blige has helped redefine R&B in the contemporary music era with chart-topping hits like “Be Without You”, “No More Drama” and “Family Affair.” At the 2018 Academy Awards, Blige made history as the first double nominee across the acting and music categories for Best Song and Best Supporting Actress for her work on Mudbound.

As previously announced, the first group of performers for the 19th annual “BET Awards” include Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Migos, H.E.R., Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lizzo, Mustard, Lil Baby, Yung Miami of City Girls, Lucky Daye and Kiana Ledé. Additionally, Taraji P. Henson, Lena Waithe, Morris Chestnut, Yara Shahidi, and Marsai Martin were also announced as presenters.

The 2019 “BET AWARDS” will simulcast LIVE at 8pm ET across seven Viacom networks in the U.S. including BET, BET HER, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Classic, VH1, and Logo. Internationally, the show will simulcast for the first time on BET Africa at 2am CAT on June 24, followed by international broadcasts in the UK on June 24 at 9pm BST, South Korea on June 25 at 9pm KST and in France on June 25 at 9pm CEST.  Internationally, BET will honor Best International Act in-show, along with the fan-voted category Best New International Act and BET International Global Good Award during the live red carpet pre-show.

Collins has produced groundbreaking and award-winning television programming, including “BET Awards,” “Grammy Awards,” “Soul Train Music Awards,” “BET Honors,” “UNCF an Evening of Stars,” “ABFF Awards” and “BET Hip Hop Awards.” Collins was an executive producer of the hit TV series “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” starring Kevin Hart, and the critically acclaimed “The New Edition Story,” a biopic on the boy band that aired as a three-part miniseries on BET in January 2017. He is also the executive producer of VH1 shows “Dear Mama” and “Hip Hop Squares” with Ice Cube. Most recently, JCE executive-produced “The Bobby Brown Story.” The miniseries picked up where “The New Edition Story” miniseries left off and chronicled the talented but troubled singer’s exit from the popular 80s boy band through his solo success. It debuted on BET in September 2018 and was the highest-rated non-tentpole program on the network since “The New Edition Story.” Next for JCE is the second season of “American Soul” on BET and Netflix’s upcoming series “Rhythm and Flow.”
