The following is a combination of press releases from MTV:

MTV has announced music icon Missy Elliott will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 VMAs. She will also perform live, returning to the VMAs stage for the first time since 2003. With a legacy that spans three decades, Elliott is one of the most influential musicians known for elevating other music artists.

“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” said Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, Viacom and Co-Brand Head, MTV International. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

Elliott is a groundbreaking solo superstar, pioneering producer, songwriter, singer, rapper and cultural icon who has transformed the global music scene. The five-time GRAMMY® Award winner has achieved unprecedented success and sold over 30 million records worldwide. Known for classic hit singles, “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “WTF (Where They From),” Elliott leads the field in her innovation, creativity and influence on other artists. Earlier this year, she was named the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Elliott has an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, and is the only female rapper to have six studio albums certified platinum, including her debut 1997 album “Supa Dupa Fly,” and 2002 blockbuster “Under Construction.” She joins a prestigious list of past Vanguard recipients, including Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Rihanna and P!nk.

MTV is partnering with PEPSI® to host a pop-up fan event, “MTV & Pepsi® Celebrate the Museum of Missy Elliott,” in New York City on August 24-25th that will highlight this unapologetic icon who helped redefine hip-hop. As fans walk through the installations, they will be completely immersed in some of Elliott’s most groundbreaking music videos and costumes. Location and ticketing information to be revealed at a later date. Additionally, the brands will celebrate Elliott’s legacy through celebrity and fan tribute videos leading up to her Vanguard performance.

In partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), MTV today announced Marc Jacobs as the first-ever recipient of the MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award. The new award will honor a fashion designer who has made an indelible impact within the world of music-artist fashion.

Jacobs and music are inextricably linked, from tapping Cher and Missy Elliott for his ad campaigns, to dressing fashion icons Lady Gaga, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. With a legacy that spans over three decades, Jacobs is a preeminent figure in fashion and music, perfectly embodying the spirit of the Fashion Trailblazer Award.

As part of the 2019 “VMAs,” Jacobs and his design team are working with MTV to create a multimedia activation on the red carpet highlighting his creative vision. The on-the-ground experience will have a dedicated photographer and highly-stylized elements designed to travel across social platforms.

Comedian, actor and best-selling author Sebastian Maniscalco will host the 2019 VMAs live from Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on Monday, August 26, 2019. The show will air across MTV’s global network of channels in more than 180 countries and territories, reaching more than half a billion households around the world. Music’s biggest stars and fans will celebrate the year’s most iconic videos with electrifying performances, viral moments and a new, first-of-its-kind immersive fan experience.

Official sponsors of the 2019 “MTV Video Music Awards” include Extra® Refreshers Gum, PEPSI®, Taco Bell®, the 2020 Toyota Corolla, and truth®.

2018 MTV Video Music Awards: Camila Cabello, Cardi B win big

August 20, 2018

by Carla Hay

It was a big night for female artists at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place August 20 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Camila Cabello won the prizes for Video of the Year (for “Havana”) and Artist of the Year. Cardi B won the most awards (three): Best New Artist; Best Collaboration (for teaming up with DJ Khaled on Jennifer Lopez’s “Dinero”); and Song of the Summer (for “I Like It,” her collaboration with J Balvin and Bad Bunny).

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez gave a powerhouse performance before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. During her high-energy, dance-filled performance, she did a medley of her hits, including “Waiting for Tonight,” “On the Floor,” “Ain’t Your Mama,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” Get Right,” “Jenny From the Block” and “Dinero.” She was also joined by Ja Rule for “I’m Real” and “Ain’t It Funny.” During her speech, she thanked her family, friends and business associates, and gave her biggest thanks to her twins Max and Emme: “Everything changed,” she said of the “two angels” who came into her life. “I knew I had to be better. I knew I had to go higher, I had to be stronger than I had been before.”

Before presenting the award for Video of the Year, Madonna gave tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died of pancreatic cancer on August 16, by telling a story of how listening to the Queen of Soul’s music motivated and influenced her when Madonna was a struggling artist.

Other multiple winners were Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” which won three prizes: Best Video With a Message, Best Direction and Best Choreography.  “Apeshit” from The Carters (also Beyoncé and Jay-Z), which was filmed at The Louvre in Paris, won the awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. J Balvin also won two prizes: the aforementioned Song of the Summer (for “I Like It” with Cardi B and Bad Bunny) and Best Latin Video for “Mi Gente” with Willy William.

The show closed with a surprise collaboration between Aerosmith and Post Malone, who performed “Toys in the Attic” together. Before he joined Aerosmith on stage, Post Malone performed “Rockstar” with 21 Savage. Earlier that night, “Rockstar” won the award for Song of the Year.

Other performers included Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj (who performed at the Oculus near the World Trade Center), Travis Scott featuring James Blake, Shawn Mendes, Maluma, Panic! At the Disco and Logic featuring Ryan Tedder. For the first time, the MTV VMAs had a PUSH stage to showcase emerging artists during the show who were named MTV’s PUSH artist in the past year. Hayley Kiyoko, Jessie Reyez, Juice WRLD and PRETTYMUCH were the performers on on the first-ever VMAs PUSH Artist Stage.

Presenters included Backstreet Boys, Millie Bobby Brown, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, G-Eazy, Jimmy Fallon, Gucci Mane, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, Keegan-Michael Key, Kyle, Karlie Kloss, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Uzi Vert, Blake Lively, Shay Mitchell, Olivia Munn, Rita Ora, Liam Payne, Bebe Rexha, Shanina Shaik, Amandla Stenberg and Teyana Taylor.

At the VMAs pre-show, the performers were Backstreet Boys, Bazzi and Bryce Vine. For the first time, the MTV VMAs will have a PUSH Artist stage for emerging artists to perform at before the show. The artists selected to perform on this stage are Bazzi, Hayley Kiyoko, Jessie Reyez, Juice WRLD and PRETTYMUCH.

2018 MTV Video Music Awards: Madonna, Aerosmith join lineup; Aretha Franklin tribute, +1 the Vote campaign added

MTV has announced that Madonna will present the award for Video of the Year, and Aerosmith will perform on the show. In addition, Variety reports that this year’s MTV VMAs will have a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died of pancreatic cancer on August 16.

The following is a press release from MTV:

In tonight’s VMAs, MTV will harness the power of friendship and unveil “+1 the Vote,” its first-ever voter campaign to ignite the most powerful voting bloc in the country for the midterm elections.

Based on research which suggests that social influence is a strong motivator in voter turnout, the cornerstone of the campaign is the +1 the Vote Registration Tool, a first-of-its-kind digital experience which will allow young people to register to vote, identify which of their friends aren’t registered to vote, and encourage them to register and join them at the polls on November 6th. Additionally, MTV will encourage its audience to vote together by supercharging youth participation with more than 1,000 parties and events at the polls across all 50 states.

“Our audience relies on their friends in both the smallest and most meaningful moments in their lives,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV. “+1 the Vote is designed to draw on the power of friendship to turn out the youth vote and impact this critical midterm election.”

“+1 the Vote” will launch in tonight’s 2018 VMAs with an all-new promo spot introducing the campaign, a website, and the +1 the Vote Registration tool. In the months leading up to the elections, “+1 the Vote” will expand to include content across MTV, its digital platforms, social channels; ongoing coverage from MTV News; and partnerships with leading artists and activists. MTV worked with a number of non-partisan organizations to bring “+1 the Vote” to life, including the Ford Foundation, Alliance for Youth Organizing, CIRCLE, part of Tisch College at Tufts University, Democracy Works’s TurboVote and #VoteTogether.

“+1 the Vote” was developed based on MTV/AP-NORC research showing that young people feel a renewed sense of empowerment in their ability to impact politics – 48% of 15-22-year-olds feel they have at least some effect on the government, up from 33% in March – and that friendship is a powerful driver of voter turnout. Additional MTV research found that that 76% of young people think inviting friends to the polling station is an effective way to encourage others to vote, while 70% think posting about voting on social media is also effective.

2018 MTV Video Music Awards: Travis Scott, Post Malone added to lineup of performers

The following is a press release from MTV:

MTV today announced that Travis Scott and Post Malone will take the stage at the 2018 “VMAs.” Scott will debut his first solo performance with a medley of hits from his highly anticipated, chart-topping, recently released album, “Astroworld,” and Malone will perform a song from his record-breaking album “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart. They join previously announced performers Jennifer Lopez – who will also be honored with the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” – Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, and Logic with Ryan Tedder.

The “VMAs” will air live from Radio City Music Hall on Monday, August 20 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT across MTV’s global network of channels in more than 180 countries and territories, reaching more than half a billion households around the world.

When artist, producer, songwriter and Cactus Jack Records founder, Travis Scott, hit the scene he forever changed hip-hop and irrevocably impacted culture. Penning and featuring on various cuts for Kanye West’s “Cruel Summer” and “Yeezus,” Scott first left his mark with 2014’s seminal “Owl Pharaoh” and “Days Before Rodeo” mixtapes. “Days Before Rodeo” garnered a platinum plaque and stormed the Top 200 at #3, while notching his first #1 on the Top Hip-Hop/Rap Albums Chart. In 2016, his second platinum opus “Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight” crashed the Billboard Top 200 and Top Hip-Hop/Rap Albums Chart and debuted at #1. “Goosebumps” featuring Kendrick Lamar earned RIAA triple-platinum status, the Young Thug collaboration, “Pick Up The Phone,” featuring Quavo, went double-platinum; “Beibs in the Trap” featuring Nav soared to platinum; and “Through the Late Night” featuring Kid Cudi became gold. Everything set the stage for his recently released album, “Astroworld.”

Post Malone stirs a mix of genres into his own sonic sound that’s both intoxicating and invigorating. His RIAA Platinum certified debut album, “Stoney,” led the genre-bending Dallas, TX artist to his first Top 10 Billboard 200 and first #1 R&B/Hip-Hop Album while being the “#1 Debut Hip-Hop Artist of 2016”. In 2018, his sophomore album, “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at #1 and achieved one the year’s biggest streaming weeks ever. Additionally, Post charted nine songs in the Top 20 of the Hot 100, notching the most songs in the Top 20 of the Hot 100. Moreover, he also smashed the record for most simultaneous Top 40 Hot 100 hits with 14. As “Beerbongs & Bentleys” returned to #1 for the second consecutive week on the Top 200, his domination shows no sign of slowing down.

Multiplatinum, record-breaking superstar Ariana Grande has delivered three platinum-selling albums and surpassed 18 billion streams, in addition to nabbing four Grammy Award nominations and landing eight hits in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.  With the release of “No Tears Left To Cry” she became the first artist in music history to see the lead single from her first four albums debut on the Top 10 on Billboard Hot 100.  This year she has graced the prestigious magazine covers of TIME, British Vogue, ELLE, and Fader.  Grande’s highly anticipated fourth studio album, Sweetener, will be released later this month.

Toronto born multi-platinum singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes released his highly anticipated self-titled third album in May 2018. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart as well as multiple additional worldwide markets, including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Holland & more. Shawn Mendes made Shawn the third youngest solo artist to ever have three #1 albums and became one of the Top best-selling album debuts of 2018.  Both “In My Blood” and “Lost In Japan,” the first two songs released off the new album, experienced massive success, soaring to the #1 and #2 spots on the overall iTunes chart in the U.S, Top 5 on iTunes in 50 countries, and held the #1 and #2 spots on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist. With “In My Blood,” Shawn became the first artist to ever have had four #1 singles at AC radio before the age of 20. In April 2017, Shawn released his 3x Platinum hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” The track scored Shawn his second #1 single at Top 40 radio and on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart, joining 7x Platinum single “Stitches.” Throughout his career, Shawn has achieved 3 consecutive #1 album debuts, 2 Platinum albums, and 7 consecutive Platinum and multi-Platinum singles. Worldwide, he has sold over 11 million albums, 100 million singles, and has amassed over 15 billion song streams and 4 billion YouTube views. Shawn has completed two sold-out world tours with over one million tickets sold, selling out legendary arenas including NYC’s Madison Square Garden, Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, and London’s O2 Arena in minutes. Shawn Mendes: The Tour begins in March 2019, with over 60 dates currently announced across Europe, North American and Asia, with more to be announced soon. He topped Billboard’s “21 Under 21” in 2017 and has been featured on Forbes “30 Under 30,” Spotify’s “25 Under 25,” and Time Magazine’s “Time 100 Most Influential.”

Maryland-bred musician Logic burst onto the music scene through a series of mixtapes that led to a significant, rabid underground fan base. These mixtapes garnered millions of downloads and streams that jumpstarted a worldwide tour before signing a record deal with Def Jam Recordings in 2014.  Logic’s last two releases – EVERYBODY and Bobby Tarantino 2 – have debuted consecutively at #1 on the US album charts. Logic has sold over 5 million albums worldwide and has been streamed over 2 billion times. At the 2017 “VMAs,” Logic performed his powerful single “1-800-273-8255,” which resulted in a 50% surge in calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Fans can vote for their favorites across 12 VMA categories, including “Video of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” “Best Collaboration” and more by visiting vma.mtv.com until Friday, August 10. Her portrayal of the Latin music sensation “Selena” earned her widespread acclaim. Lopez’ simultaneous release of her second studio album “J.Lo” and her romantic comedy “The Wedding Planner” paved the way for her to become the first woman to have a number one album and film in the same week.

Lopez’s production company Nuyorican Productions has produced numerous film and television projects, including the box office hit “Boy Next Door,” Freeform’s award-winning series “The Fosters,” and the NBC hit drama “Shades of Blue.”  In addition to starring in “Shades of Blue,” Lopez also serves as an executive producer and a judge on NBC’s hit dance competition show “World of Dance.”  Lopez will next be seen starring in and producing STX’s upcoming feature film “Second Act,” slated to release in November 2018, alongside Leah Remini, Milo Ventimiglia and Vanessa Hudgens.

Furthermore, Lopez dedicates her time to support humanitarian causes. Following Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, Lopez and Alex Rodriguez personally donated $1 million to humanitarian aid for Puerto Rico and helped launch a humanitarian relief campaign, “Somos Una Voz,” an effort supported by celebrities to rush supplies to areas affected by Hurricane Maria.  Lopez and Rodriguez then organized a star studded telethon event for disaster relief, “One Voice: Somos Live!,” which raised over $35 million.  In April 2018, Lopez was named one of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People.”
