The following is a press release from MTV:

MTV has announced global pop superstar Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards live from the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Sunday, August 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.  In advance of the world tour for her most recent, chart-topping album, Witness, Perry will light up the stage as the first performer announced for this year’s show.  Earlier this week, she secured a spot as one of the top nominees for the 2017 VMAs with nods in five categories, including: Best Pop, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects for “Chained to the Rhythm,” Best Art Direction for “Bon Appetit,” and Best Collaboration for Calvin Harris’ “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Perry and Big Sean.

“I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson,” said Katy Perry.  “Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids.”

“We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs,” Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music and Music Talent, Global Entertainment Group, Viacom.  “She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”

Katy Perry’s new album, “Witness” (Capitol Records), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking her third album to debut atop the chart. It marked the biggest week for an album by a female artist in 2017. It also claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Current Albums and Current Pop Albums charts. Globally, “Witness” topped the iTunes Albums chart in 46 countries.

The official video for “Bon Appétit,” which can be seen HERE, set a new record for Katy, surpassing 100 million views in just 18 days. Her video for “Firework” just passed one billion, while “Dark Horse” and “Roar” have all surpassed two billion.  This year Katy’s iconic song “Roar” earned a Diamond certification surpassing the 10-million threshold counting song sales and streams in the United States. “Roar” follows previously Diamond-certified songs “Dark Horse” and “Firework,” and makes her the first artist in the Recording Industry Association of America to earn three RIAA Diamond Song Awards.  Additionally, she reached a new milestone on Twitter as the first person to reach 100 million followers; Katy has been the most followed person on Twitter since 2013.

MTV released the full list of nominees for the 2017 “MTV Video Music Awards” earlier this week in a first ever Instagram live collaboration between an elite squad of nine Instagram stars. The announcement revealed Kendrick Lamar leading the pack with eight nominations for his video “HUMBLE.” Katy Perry and The Weeknd are tied with five nominations each, following closely behind is Bruno Mars and DJ Khaled tied with four, and Ed Sheeran and Alessia Cara tied with three nominations each.  Performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.

Fans can vote for their favorites across eight VMA categories, including “Video of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” “Best Collaboration” and more by visiting www.vma.mtv.com.  Additionally, voting for the Best New Artist award, presented by Taco Bell, will remain live through the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show airing at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT.  The top two artists will be revealed during the pre-show, kicking off a live Twitter hashtag vote with the winner being announced during the live main telecast.  Nominees for the socially voted category, “Best Song of Summer,” will be announced at a later date.

Jesse Ignjatovic returns as Executive Producer for the 2017 “MTV Video Music Awards.” Bruce Gillmer, Garrett English and Lee Lodge are Executive Producers. Melanie Block serves as Executive In Charge of Production. Amani Duncan is Music Executive in Charge. Wendy Plaut is Celebrity Talent Executive in Charge.

Official sponsors of the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards include: Extra® Gum, PEPSI®, Swiffer®, Taco Bell®, truth®, and Verizon.

Mick Jagger releases ‘Gotta Get a Grip’ and ‘England Lost,’ his first solo singles in six years

Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger has released two new solo singles: “Get a Grip” and “England Lost.” The videos for the songs premiered on July 27, 2017. They are Jagger’s first solo singles since 2011’s “T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)” featuring Will.i.am and Jennifer Lopez.  T.H.E (The  Hardest Ever)” was a No. 3 hit in the United Kingdom but reached only No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.

“Get a Grip” and “England Lost” were released with very little fanfare.  Jagger does not appear in the videos for the songs. Instead, the videos feature actors and models. (Luke Evans is the star of the black-and-white “England Lost” video.) There is no word yet if Jagger will release another solo album.  Jagger has released four solo albums; his most recent solo album of new material was 2001’s “Goddess in the Doorway.”

The Rolling Stones launch their “No Filter” 2017 European Tour on September 9 in Hamburg, Germany. The tour concludes October 25 in Nanterre, France.

The following is a press release from MTV:

MTV today announced nominations for the 2017 “MTV Video Music Awards” exclusively on Instagram Live, with Kendrick Lamar scoring the most of the year with eight nominations for his video “HUMBLE.” Katy Perry and The Weeknd are tied for five nominations each.   Building on the critical acclaim of the non-gendered categories at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the network also announced the former “Best Female Video” and “Best Male Video” categories have been combined for “Artist of the Year.” Additionally, “Best Fight Against the System” has been added to celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice.  The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the “Fabulous” Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Sunday, August 27 AT 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

True to their DNA, MTV is putting the fans in the forefront – unlike other awards shows.  In a global first, MTV announced today’s nominations on Instagram Live with an elite squad of Instagram stars.  To date, no previous tentpole awards show has utilized Instagram Live to announce their complete list of nominees.  With a combined social reach of over 30 million followers, the team of Instagrammers included; Bretman Rock, Ariel Martin (Baby Ariel), DC Young Fly, Andrea Russet, Chantel Jeffries, Ricky Dillon, StassiBaby, Jay Versace and Nate Garner.  Each influencer was tasked with unveiling a portion of the nominees on Instagram Live in a successive chain that ultimately revealed the full list.

Beginning today, fans can vote for their favorites across eight VMA categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and more by visiting vma.mtv.com.  Additionally, voting for the “Best New Artist” award, presented by Taco Bell®, will remain live through the 2017 “MTV Video Music Awards” Pre-Show airing at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT.  The top two artists will be revealed during the pre-show, kicking off a live Twitter hashtag vote with the winner being announced during the live main telecast.  Nominees for the socially voted category, “Best Song of Summer,” will be announced at a later date.

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington dead at 41 of apparent suicide

July 20, 2017

by John Larson

Chester Bennington, the lead singer of the rock band Linkin Park, died of an apparent suicide at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates, California, according to the Associated Press. He was 41. A TMZ report says that Bennington’s suicide was by hanging, and that his body was found just before 9 a.m. Pacific Time on July 20, 2017.

In interviews, Bennington had been open about his long struggles with drug addiction and depression. Many of Linkin Park’s songs expressed dark feelings of anger, despair and anxiety. Linkin Park (formed in 1996 in Augora Hills, California) became an instant success with its 2000 debut album, “Hybrid Theory,” which had numerous hit singles, including “One Step Closer,” “In the End” and the Grammy-winning “Crawling.” Linkin Park sold 70 million albums worldwide, and “Hybrid Theory” remains the band’s best-selling album, with 10 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. The band’s last studio album with Bennington was “One More Light,” which was released in May 2017.

In addition to performing with Linkin Park, Bennington collaborated with several other artists, most notably Jay-Z, who did the 2004 mash-up album “Collision Course” with Linkin Park. The album had the Grammy-winning hit single “Numb/Encore.” Bennington also had a side band called Dead by Sunrise, which released its debut album, “Out of Ashes,” in 2009. In 2013, Bennington toured and recorded as the temporary lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, after the band parted ways with its original lead singer, Scott Weiland, who died of a drug overdose in 2015. Bennington was a good friend of Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell, who also died of suicide by hanging in May 2017. Bennington performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at Cornell’s memorial. July 20, 2017, would have been Cornell’s 53rd birthday.

Bennington is survived by his second wife, Talinda, and his six children.

August 1, 2017 UPDATE:

The following is a press release from Warner Bros. Records:

This past weekend, family and close friends celebrated the life of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington at a private service in Los Angeles, while fans worldwide organized over 300 band-endorsed memorials to pay homage to his legacy.

On Saturday, July 29, the private service at South Coast Botanical Garden in Palos Verdes Estates hosted more than 500 family members and close friends – including not only his Linkin Park bandmates but countless musicians with whom he has shared the stage alongside over the past two decades. Ted Stryker of KROQ led the service. Chester’s Stone Temple Pilots bandmates Robert and Dean DeLeo, Kings of Chaos drummer Matt Sorum, Damon Fox, and Jimmy Gnecco teamed up for a powerful and poignant rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Ryan Shuck (who comprised Dead By Sunrise with Chester) and Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn were among the friends who gave heartfelt eulogies.

The outpouring of support from the Linkin Park community continues to echo around the globe just as loudly as the frontman’s immortal voice does. One fan started a Google Doc, collating and collecting all of the global memorials to share with other fans around the world. From Africa and Asia to across Europe, Oceania, and South America, LP Ambassadors and fan sites honored Chester’s memory with their own touching tributes. Throughout these countries, thousands have created artwork, videos, social media posts, and more about the singer, honoring him forever.

Music For Relief, the non-profit organization Linkin Park founded in 2005, has launched the One More Light Fund in honor of Chester Bennington. Donations can be made at www.musicforrelief.org. In addition, the band shared the Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK.

Alice Cooper’s ‘Welcome to My Nightmare Special Edition’ gets long-awaited DVD release

The following is a press release from Eagle Rock Entertainment:

Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare Special Edition” DVD will be released on September 8, 2017 via Eagle Rock Entertainment. The DVD features the 1975 TV special “Alice Cooper: The Nightmare,” now available on DVD for the first time, along with the 1976 “Welcome To My Nightmare” concert film.

Aired on ABC in the US, “Alice Cooper: The Nightmare” showcases every song from the legendary ‘Welcome To My Nightmare” album, which had just been released at the time. With Cooper taking on the role of Steven, and Vincent Price serving as The Spirit Of The Nightmare, this special was a unique introduction to his new album, drawing fans even further into the dark fantasy.

Melding horror, theater, and rock music, Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare” was a stage show the likes of which was never seen before. Hits and classics songs like “School’s Out”, “Only Women Bleed”, “Billion Dollar Babies”, “Welcome To My Nightmare”, “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, “I’m Eighteen”, and “Department Of Youth” were backdropped with giant spiders, skeletons, a cyclops, and the voice of horror royalty Vincent Price. This groundbreaking theatrical presentation scintillated, horrified, and thrilled audiences, delivering an experience unlike any concerts at the time. He truly brought spectators into a living (or unliving) nightmare, and they loved every minute of it.

The combination of the “Welcome To My Nightmare” concert film and “Alice Cooper: The Nightmare” TV special demonstrates the true genius of Alice Cooper. He is beyond music, and beyond horror – Alice Cooper is an experience, who continues to frighten and thrill audiences to this day.

The following is a press release from Cirque du Soleil:

Global entertainment leader Cirque du Soleil announced the acquisition of New-York-based Blue Man Productions, a global live entertainment company best known for the award-winning Blue Man Group show, performed in over 20 countries and seen by more than 35 million people worldwide since 1991. The acquisition of Blue Man Group considerably widens Cirque du Soleil’s audience pool, adding to their portfolio six resident productions established across the United States and Germany, as well as a North American and a World Tour.

The transaction is in line with Cirque du Soleil’s vision for the future, as the Montreal-based creative powerhouse looks to further expand globally and diversify its entertainment offering beyond circus arts. With its original aesthetics, award-winning musical talent and immersive experience know-how, the acquisition of Blue Man Group also represents an additional asset for Cirque du Soleil’s creative team and show offerings.

“We want to broaden our horizons, develop new forms of entertainment, reach out to new audiences and expand our own creative capabilities. Today, we are taking a decisive step towards materializing these ambitions”, said Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil. “We are extremely excited to welcome the iconic Blue Man Group to our portfolio of shows. Their unbridled creativity makes them a perfect cultural fit for Cirque du Soleil. Our extensive marketing research also confirms that Blue Man Group is a strong ‘love brand’ with a solid fan base – something else our two brands have in common.”

For 25 years, Blue Man Group has earned an unrivaled reputation in the global entertainment industry. With a history and values similar to that of Cirque, the company was born of a crazy dream in the creative minds of its three founders. Blending technology, music and comedy, they created boldly colored, playful and steadfastly interactive shows. The company currently operates resident shows in New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Chicago, Orlando and Berlin, as well as two touring productions.

Blue Man Group Co-Founder Phil Stanton explains, “When we began our Blue Man journey, we set our sights on creating theater that would bring people together in a celebration of human connection. We have been humbled, amazed and inspired by the audience responses we have received over the years.”

Co-Founder Chris Wink adds, “Now, we find ourselves on the brink of our next chapter, and we have big ideas for the future. Only a global creative powerhouse like Cirque du Soleil could help us achieve our vision. Their commitment to artistic quality and originality is unparalleled and their creative resources are vast. It is an honor to join forces with their organization.”

G-Eazy named partner and co‑creative director of Stillhouse

The following is a Stillhouse press release:

When hustle recognizes hustle, great things are possible. Stillhouse, the breakout spirits company best known for its award-winning clear American whiskey, announced today that Oakland-bred multi-platinum rapper and producer Gerald “G-Eazy” Gillum has been named Partner and Co‑Creative Director alongside CEO & Founder Brad Beckerman.

This year both creators are burning brighter than ever: Stillhouse with its one-of-a-kind daring red, stainless steel can that goes where glass can’t, and G-Eazy, style icon at the helm of hip-hop and pop music, and one of Forbes’ “30 Under 30” honorees, with his recently announced new album titled “The Beautiful & Damned” on the way this fall. “Spirits companies had approached me with endorsement deals but that was just money,” said G-Eazy. “I kept running into Stillhouse everywhere and fell in love with the brand not to mention its smooth whiskey. I wanted to partner with Brad because he has this infectious energy and passion for the brand he’s continuing to grow. We hit it off quick with an instant shared vision and love for Stillhouse.”

Given Brad and G-Eazy’s mutual enthusiasm for whiskey, respect for each other’s hustle mentality, and love for Johnny Cash (whose audacity and unapologetic artistry has deeply inspired them), Beckerman knew partnering was the right decision: “We had an instant bond – in my gut I knew that G would make an amazing partner and contributor to Stillhouse because of his drive, creativity and meticulousness. Stillhouse blends nostalgia and heritage with just the right amount of irreverence and G pushes the envelope to elevate that further.” The fast friendship led G-Eazy to invest in Stillhouse, which marks the rapper’s first spirits venture and closes a significant round of funding for the company.

Beyond a love of whiskey, the duo is respected for their business acumen and willingness to take risks. As a college graduate from Loyola University G-Eazy applies his marketing expertise to his art, ensuring every event is a curated experience providing exclusive meet & greet packages and fan activations. In addition to his merchandise available for purchase at regional shows across the US, he has extended his efforts to global pop-up shops that also feature special brand collaborations. Beckerman, a serial entrepreneur and former Chief Creative Officer at Live Nation, brings to the table his business savvy, keen eye for branding and depth of experience in spirits, music, fashion, sports and entertainment.

First on deck: G-Eazy will help to open the Louisiana market, which is home to the musician’s alma mater. This market expansion is a reflection of accelerated demand and continued growth for the young powerhouse whiskey brand. G-Eazy shared, “I’m honored and excited to represent my second home and old stomping grounds. Can’t wait for NOLA to see what we have coming!”
