The 19th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 17 to October 20, 2024, in New York City. In 2023, New York Comic Con was affected by strikes by the the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America. The striking actors and actresses in attedance either did autograph or photo sessions, or they if they did panel/Q&A discussions, they had to limit the topics to things that didn’t promote work owned or produced by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers companies that they were striking against.

In 2022, New York Comic Con returned to being an in-person-only event, after being a hybrid event (where people could attend in person or virtually) in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con was cancelled as an in-person event in 2020, and instead presented as a scaled-down virtual-only event. Before the pandemic, New York Comic Con attracted about 250,000 people per year since 2017, according to ReedPOP, the company that produces the event. The first New York Comic Con took place in 2006.

In 2024, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. New this year, according to a ReedPOP press release: A lineup of professional programming will take place on October 16. The press release says: “This marks the first year that ReedPop will be extending its content into Wednesday, just ahead of opening day for the convention … On Wednesday, October 16 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., comic book retailers, industry professionals, and sponsors of NYCC will be able to participate in a closed event full of panels, interactive programming, free swag, and private signings in the Javits Center’s River Pavilion before NYCC fully opens on Thursday, October 17. Kid Cudi, also known as Scott Mescudi, reaches for the stars with his comic book series ‘Moon Man’ at 2023 New York Comic Con

October 14, 2023

by Carla Hay

Scott Mescudi (also known as Kid Cudi) at New York Comic Con in New York City on October 14, 2023. (Photo by Carla Hay)

Rapper/actor/multimedia artist Scott Mescudi, also known as Kid Cudi, has joined the growing list of entertainers who have launched their own series of comic books. On October 14, 2023, Kid Cudi made an appearance on a Q&A panel in a packed room of cheering fans at New York Comic Con (at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City) to promote his “Moon Man” comic books series, which will debut on Image Comics on January 31, 2024. Attendees were given free booklets of sneak preview “Moon Man” art after the panel.

Because of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike that began in July, Kid Cudi was not allowed to talk about “struck” work related to SAG-AFTRA projects, such as his movies and TV shows that are produced by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Instead, Kid Cudi only discussed his “Moon Man” project.

“Moon Man” which is based on Kid Cudi’s concepts, is about an astronaut/former fighter pilot named Ramon Townsend, who develops superpowers after an outer space accident where he saved people and became a hero. Kid Cudi appeared on the panel with his “Moon Man” business partners: Black Market Narrative founder Kyle Higgins and Mad Solar president Karina Manashil. Higgins, a co-writer of the “Moon Man” series, mentioned that “Moon Man” character Ramon Townsend (who is illustrated to look like Kid Cudi) was originally going to have Scott as his first name.

Kid Cudi said during the panel discussion: “I started getting into comics when I was 8 or 9 years old. I was into the Spider-Mans, the Supermans, the Batmans. But the one comic that really blew my mind as a kid was ‘Scud: The Disposable Assassin.’ For a while, when I was a kid, I wanted to be a cartoonist. Cartoons, art, graphic novels: Those are the things I lean into. I always thought it would be cool to one day tell a story in comic book form.”

In 2013, he began to incorporate the Moon Man character into his music, including “The Flight of the Moon Man” on his “Indicud” album released that year. Kid Cudi said, “I was thinking that if the Moon Man was a character, what would his music be? What would his theme be? This was something that was already brewing in my mind for years.”

In 2022, Kid Cudi and Manashil (who worked as a producer with Kid Cudi on his Netflix animated sci-fi series “Entergalactic”) began discussions to make a comic book series for the Moon Man character. Kid Cudi said that Higgins was instrumental in the brainstorming process to come up with original ideas.

Manashil praised Kid Cudi by saying that he’s a “genius.” She added, “The majority of what we’re doing a projects that he’s idea’d himself.” Higgins, who is the co-creator of the “Radiant Black” comic book series, mentioned that Image Comics (unlike most comic book companies) allow the creators to keep the copyrights to their work. Higgins added about the “Moon Man” project: “This was a project that, when we started talking about it, I got very excited about the possibilties.”

Kid Cudi said, “As someone who’s read comics and know what’s out there, it was really important for me, if I was going to approach this superhero thing, to really go in and do it right, I needed to make sure that my character was unique and different from anything you had ever seen before.”

Kid Cudi also mentioned how he is similar to hte “Moon Man” character Ramon Townsend: “There’s a lot of style and flavor in the character of Ramon that is my own. He’s this young, hotshot pilot, so I had to make him fit and make him feel more like me. The fashion is definitely there. He’s from Cleveland. That was important to me. That’s my hometown.”

Kid Cudi also mentioned that he and the other “Moon Man” creators are talking about making exclusive Kid Cudi digital music as part of the digital editions of the “Moon Man” comics to listen to a “score as you read … to make it a more exciting experience for you.”

Although a comic book series can come from a concept created by one person, Kid Cudi said that team collaborations are crucial to the making of “Moon Man” and any comic book series. He credited Higgins for helping him stay on the path of originality because he would tell Kid Cudi if any ideas he had were already done in a comic boook. “We set out to make something different, something new” Kid Cudi said. “Kyle was the guiding light to make sure that we came up with something refreshing.”

Kid Cudi concluded by saying about the “Moon Man” comic book series: “I know that this is a really powerful comic. There are endless possibilities with ‘Moon Man.'”

2023 New York Comic Con: What to expect at this year’s event

October 10, 2023

The 18th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 13 to October 15, 2023, in New York City.

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, attendees are no longer being asked to wear a face covering/mask while inside a New York Comic Con building. In 2022, attendees were no longer required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, which were requirements in 2021.

In 2023, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which began in July 2023, New York Comic Con in 2023 for the first time will not have panels with cast members of movies, TV shows, or video games that are owned by companies that are members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP)—essentially, any major, corporate-owned company that makes or distributes movies, TVs and video games. If any SAG-AFTRA members make speaking appearances at New York Comic Con, they can’t talk about any “struck” work (work that is part of the strike) that they’ve been involved with in any way.

Exceptions are made for projects owned by companies that are not AMPTP members—in other words, independent projects. Cast members who are involved in these independent projects are allowed to work on and promote those projects. For example, AMC Networks (not a member of AMPTP) has showcases at New York Comic Con in 2023, including a panel on October 12 for AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” that will feature an appearance by star Norman Reedus to promote the show. In August 2023, SAG-AFTRA granted a waiver for AMC shows “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” and “Interview With the Vampire” for cast members of these three shows to work for and promote these shows during the strike.

TV shows continue to dominate the most high-profile panels and activities. New York Comic Con in 2023 has the following TV shows with panel showcases in the event’s largest rooms: Apple TV+’s astronaut drama “For All Mankind” will have a panel on October 12. The fantasy Web series “Critical Role” gets a spotlight on October 12. Apple TV+s horror series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” has a showcase on October 13. On October 14, several cast members from Max’s comedy series “Our Flag Means Death” will have panel discussion not about the show (which is struck work) but about themselves and their comedy experiences.

“Star Trek” Universe series will once again get a spotlight at New York Comic Con, with a panel discussion on October 14. Also on October 14, Prime Video will have a two-hour showcase of its sci-fi/fantasy/action/horror programming, with some sneak previews and exclusive footage. The Disney+ live-action fantasy series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” (based on Rick Riordan’s book series) will have a panel and sneak preview on October 15.

“Goosebumps,” the TV series version of R. L. Stine’s fantasy novel series, will show its first episode and have a Q&A with creatives from the show on October 13, the same day that the series will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu. The Season 3 premiere of USA Network/Syfy’s “Chucky” will have its world premiere at New York Comic Con on October 12. More TV show panels with special screenings on October 13 include FX’s animated series “Archer” and Crunchyroll’s anime series “My Hero Academia.”

Other animated series getting their own panels at New York Comic Con include Hulu’s “Futurama” on October 12; Crunchyroll’s “Dragon Ball” series on October 12; Crunchyroll’s “Attack on Titan” on October 13; Netflix’s anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” on October 14. Adult Swim’s “Ricky and Morty,” “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and “Smiling Friends” have a panel showcase on October 12.

Fox’s animated series “Krapopolis” and “Grimsburg” (a show that debuts in 2024) will share a panel session on October 14. The English-language voice cast members of Crunchyroll’s “One Piece” animated TV series will have a panel on October 14. Disney Channel’s animated series “The Owl House” (2020-2023) has been cancelled, but some of the voice actors from the show are doing an October 15 panel (not sponsored by Disney) to talk about the show.

Most of the feature films that have panels at New York Comic Con this year are animated films, action films and horror movies. On October 12, sneak preview information will be given about 2024’s “The Strangers” horror film series, directed by Renny Harlin. Shudder is having a panel bringing together several directors of its popular “V/H/S/”horror movie anthology series. Animated films getting their own panels or screenings include “The Tunnel to Summer, The Exit of Goodbyes” (anime film dubbed in English) on October 12. The comedy sequel “Good Burger 2” will be showcased on October 15.

[September 12, 2023 UPDATE: A panel for the horror movie “Thanksgiving,” with director Eli Roth in attendance, was set to take place on September 13, but the panel has been cancelled for an unspecified reason.]

On October 12, prolific horror movie/TV producer Jason Blum will talk about his current and upcoming movies, including “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Night Swim” and “Totally Killer.” For a panel taking place on October 14, filmmaker Matthew Vaughn will discuss his movies that he’s directed, including “Kick-Ass,” the “Kingsman” series and “Argylle.”

In addition, the 2023 edition of New York Comic Con will have Q&As that each spotlight different actors and actresses. Ewan McGregor (star of several “Star Wars” movies and Disney+’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series) will do a Q&A on October 12. David Tennant, who is best known for his starring roles in BBC’s “Doctor Who” and Prime Video’s “Good Omens,” will also do a Q&A on October 12. Several stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take to the stage on October 14: Chris Evans, also known as Captain America, gets a solo spotlight, while “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” co-stars Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Pom Klementieff and Michael Rooker will do a group discussion. Because they cannot talk about “struck work,” the focus of the talks will be other topics.

Stars of Broadway shows and other musicals are represented on several panels presented by Playbill. “The Big Broadway Nerd Panel” will return and this year will feature Broadway stars such as Casey Likes, Roger Bart and Liana Hunt on an October 12 panel. There are also panels for “Back to the Future: The Musical”(October 13); “Wicked” (October 13); “Death Note: The Musical” (October 14); and “The Broadway Bard Party” (October 15).

The 2023 Harvey Awards Hall of Fame ceremony will be take place during New York Comic Con on October 12. The recipients are Marv Wolfman and George Pérez (who is being inducted posthumously) of DC Comics’ “New Teen Titans” fame; Chris Claremont (Marvel Comics’ “X-Men”); Walt Simonson (Marvel’s “Thor”); Louise Simonson (Marvel’s “Power Pack”)l and Bill Griffith (the nationally syndicated “Zippy the Pinhead” comic strip).

New York Comic Con also offer specialty areas for attendees with specific identity needs. Returning after its 2022 debut is the Pride Lounge (located in Room 1C01-02), for people with LGBTQ interests, with some LGBTQ-themed discussion panels and guest appearances. Family HQ (in Room 1E05-06) is a family-friendly environment, with an emphasis on activities for pre-teen children. In addition, Gaming Zone (in Room 1E) returns to offer a variety of options for gamers. The Community Lounge (located in the River Pavilion) is for informal gatherings and if attendees just need a place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the other areas of the event. Professional Programming (for industry professionals) will also take place in the River Pavilion.

And, of course, there will be plenty of panels, exhibits and previews for comic books, video games, podcasts, fantasy novels and other pop-culture attractions. It wouldn’t be a Comic Con without cosplaying and merchandise sales. The Cosplay Central area returns to the River Pavilion at the Javits Center. While at Cosplay Central, cosplayers can mingle, pose for photos, use the dressing rooms and attend panel discussions. The New York Comic Con finalist round for the Cosplay Central Costume Showcase will take place on October 15 at Main Stage 1D Hall. New York Comic Con also has an enormous amount of merchandise for sale for numerous types of entertainment.

Review: ‘Significant Other’ (2022), starring Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy

October 17, 2022

“Significant Other” (2022)

Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen

Culture Representation: Taking place in an unnamed part of the Pacific Northwest, the horror film “Significant Other” features a predominantly white cast of characters (with one Asian person) representing the middle-class.

Culture Clash: A dating couple travel to an isolated wooded area for backpack hiking and camping, but they encounter something sinister that changes their lives forever.

Culture Audience: “Significant Other” will appeal mainly to people who don’t mind watching unimaginative and slow-paced horror movies.

“Significant Other” blandly rips off plot developments from other movies about terror in a remote wooded area and sci-fi body horror. The acting is unremarkable. Everything in the movie looks like a lazy imitation of other films with the same ideas. The ending of the movie is so sloppily edited and underwhelming, it looks like the filmmakers ran out of ideas.

Written and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, “Significant Other” was shown as a sneak preview at the 2022 edition of New York Comic Con in New York City. One of the movie’s biggest flaws is that it takes too long to get to any real horror. And even then, that horror is mind-numbingly predictable. It’s yet another horror flick about people stranded in a wooded area where something dangerous is about to happen.

“Significant Other” has a very small number of people in its cast. The two characters with most of the screen time in “Significant Other” are a couple who’ve been dating each other for the past six years. Unfortunately, because so much of the movie revolves around just this dreadfully dull couple, the movie gets bogged down in a lot of wishy-wishy drama about how these two people handle their relationship.

Ruth Miller (played by Maika Monroe) and her boyfriend Harry (played by Jake Lacy) have driven to this wooded area somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, for what Harry hopes will be a romantic getaway of backpack hiking and camping. (“Significant Other” was actually filmed in Oregon.) Ruth is reluctant to go on this trip because she says these activities make her nervous. Therefore, Ruth is already in a bad mood when they begin their trip.

Harry assures Ruth about the trail they’ll be taking on their hike: “This is the fourth time I’ve done this trail. There’s nothing scary about it.” He also comments to Ruth, who loves to surf, how he thinks it’s interesting that hiking makes her more frightened than surfing. Ruth says she’s comfortable with surfing because she grew up around the ocean. It’s at this point in the movie that you know there’s going to be a scene in the movie where Ruth’s swimming skills will come in handy.

Some more low-key bickering happens between Harry and Ruth. Unbeknownst to Ruth, he plans to propose marriage and give her an engagement ring on this trip. The problem is that Ruth is very cynical about marriage. As she says later in the movie, after Harry proposes, “All that marriage does is lock you in, and you lose control of your life.” Stung by this rejection, Harry tells Ruth that she’s probably afraid of marriage because she’s still bitter about her parents’ divorce.

The couple’s bickering turns into a full-blown argument. Ruth’s mental health issues (she has panic attacks) and her therapy treatment are discussed at length. Harry often has a condescending tone with Ruth about her psychological fragility, which makes him look like not quite the nice guy he first appeared to be in the beginning of the movie. Ruth (who does a lot of pouting and vacant staring) isn’t exactly easy to deal with though, because she’s very neurotic and moody.

Meanwhile, during all these time-wasting scenes, viewers will be wondering if “Significant Other” is a horror movie or a very boring relationship drama. Will Harry and Ruth resolve their differences? Will Ruth change her mind about marrying Harry? Will anyone watching this movie really care? “Significant Other” makes this couple’s relationship so lackluster, the answer is a resounding “no” to the last question.

There’s a little bit of a foreshadowing of the horror that might happen later, when a deer is shown in the woods getting attacked from behind by something that has a tentacle. And then, there are repetitive scenes of Ruth becoming afraid because she thinks she saw a deer in the woods. Harry reassures her every time that there’s no reason for her to be frightened.

In the last third of the movie, Harry and Ruth meet another couple hiking in the woods: spouses Ray (played by Matthew Yang King) and Vivian (played by Dana Green), who encounter Harry and Ruth under some very stressful circumstances. The horror in the movie comes too little, too late. And by the time the big “reveal” happens, it’s all very unimaginative and looks like an inferior patchwork of sci-fi horror clichés that have been done much better in many other movies.

Paramount+ premiered “Significant Other” on October 7, 2022.

2022 New York Comic Con: event highlights and photos

October 10, 2022

by Carla Hay

Culture Mix was on the scene at the 2022 edition of the fan convention New York Comic Con, held October 6 to October 9 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Here are some of the highlights.

“Star Trek” Universe

On October 8, the “Star Trek” Universe panel (for the current “Star Trek” shows on Paramount+) was one of the most highly anticipated panels at New York Comic Con, because it revealed a few new trailers and confirmed what fans have been requesting for years: a reunion of the “Star Trek: Next Generation” cast.

“Star Trek: Next Generation” fan faves LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn were among the former “Star Trek: The Next Generation” cast members (along with Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, and Brent Spiner) who joined star Patrick Stewart to announce that they will all be reunited in the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard.” Former “Star Trek: The Next Generation” co-star Daniel Davis (who was not at the panel) will also be part of this reunion. In Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard” (premiering on February 16, 2023), the heroes will contend with a new villain named Vadic (played by Amanda Plummer), an alien captain of the warship Shrike. Beyond that, the cast members kept saying on the panel that they couldn’t reveal any spoiler details, although some tidbits of new information were discussed.

Burton said that his “Star Trek” character Geordi La Forge is now “happily married with two daughters.” Elder daughter Sidney La Forge (played by Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) is an ensign and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan. Younger daughter Alandra La Forge (played by Mica Burton, LeVar’s real-life daughter) is an ensign who works alongside Geordi. LeVar pointed out Mica in the audience, who enthusiastically cheered for her. LeVar said of daughter Mica being part of this cast reunion: “She grew up around all of these fine folks, so to have her as a member of the cast and a member of the family is pretty cool.”

Dorn, who’s played the character of Worf in several “Star Trek” TV shows and movies, said of the journey that Worf will take in this reunion: “I was very fortunate that the producers incorporated our ideas of where he’s going to be, and where he’s going to go. There’s a lot of things that they wanted to keep, and there’s a lot of things that they actually convinced me to change about the character.”

“Star Trek: Discovery” made history in 2017, for being the first “Star Trek” TV series to have a woman of color as the captain of the ship. Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays lead character Michael Burnham on the show, joined the “Star Trek: Discovery” team virtually from video linkup on the show’s TV set in Toronto. The show’s fifth season (which premieres in 2023, on a date to be announced) will feature the spaceship team going on a mystery quest to find an ancient hidden power.

Martin-Green, who respectfully acknowledged the passing of original “Star Trek” star Nichelle Nichols (who died on July 30, at the age of 89), said that the “Star Trek: Discovery” team is like a second family to her. She also commented on the show’s fifth season: “I really do give respect to the writers for this season, because we really do dig deeper than we ever have.”

Wilson Cruz (an Afro-Latino actor who plays Dr. Hugh Culber) and Anthony Rapp (a white actor who plays Paul Stamets) are both openly gay and friends in real life, and they portray an openly gay couple on “Star Trek: Discovery.” Rapp said his role on “Star Trek: Discovery” role was offered to him like a gift.

Cruz said, “I had the exact opposite experience. I chased [the role] down like a rabid dog, because it fit so neatly with my world perspective.” Cruz commented on the show’s diversity in its cast members: “This is what the cast of anything should look like. It should look like the world we live in.”

The “Star Trek” Universe panel also featured a segment for the animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” with Black actor Brett Gray and his co-stars Kate Mulgrew and Jameela Jamil. “Star Trek: Prodigy” will have its Season 2 mid-season premiere on October 27, 2022.

New TV Series

Netflix’s “The Midnight Club” is a horror series that debuted on October 7, and immediately trended in the Top 10 on Netflix. The show’s first episode had its world premiere at New York Comic Con on October 6 before launching into the Q&A part of the show’s panel. “The Midnight Club” (which is set in the mid-1990s) has a racially diverse ensemble cast, but the show is told from the perspective of a main character who happens to be Black. Ilonka (played by Iman Benson) is a studious and intelligent orphan, who lives in California, finds out she has cancer, abandons her plans to go to Stanford University, and decides to live at the unconventional Brightcliffe Hospice, a facility for other teens and young adults with terminal illnesses.

Ilonka joins a clique of patients who secretly gather every midnight to tell each other scary stories, while the hospice has some sinister secrets that are revealed. The other Black people in “The Midnight Club” cast include Annarah Cymone as introverted Sandra, William Chris Sumpter as flamboyant Chris Spencer, and Adia (no last name) as dishonest Cheri, who all portray Brightcliffe patients.

During the show’s New York Comic Con panel, Benson said that she originally thought that the most difficult scene for her to do in the show would be in the first-episode scene where Ilonka finds out that she had cancer. “I wanted to make sure it was depicted authentically and done justice.” However, Benson commented that filming scenes in a later episode was more challenging for her, because “we’re dealing with terminal illness, and we end up losing [one of the characters on the show].”

The animated series “Transformers: EarthSpark,” which premieres November 11 on Paramount+, is about an African American family who adopts the first Transformers robots born on Earth. The voice cast includes Benni Latham as matriarch Dot Malto, and Jon Jon Briones as patriarch Alex Malto. Voicing the characters of Dot and Alex’s two kids are Sydney Mikayla as 13-year-old boy Robby Malto and Zion Broadnax as 9-year-old girl Morgan “Mo” Malto.

Mikyala and Broadnax were among the “Transformers: EarthSpark” cast members who were on the show’s October 9 panel at New York Comic Con. The panel included the world premiere of the first episode of “Transformers: EarthSpark,” which shows how rebellious Robby tried to run away from home, and instead he and Mo discovered two Transformers (space alien robots that can turn into vehicles) that eventually get adopted by the Malto family. The Transformers adoptees are named Twitch (voiced by Kathreen Khavari) and Thrash (voiced by Zeno Robinson), who are both Terran siblings. Also in the series are heroic leader Optimus Prime (voiced by Alan Tudyk)’ adventurous hero Bumblebee (voiced by Danny Pudi); villain Megatron (voiced by Rory McCann), Optimus Prime sidekick Elita-1 (voiced by Cissy Jones); and villain Mandroid (voiced by Diedrich Bader).

“Kindred,” which is based on Octavia E. Butler’s 1979 sci-fi novel, tells the story of an aspiring screenwriter named Dana James (played by Mallori Johnson), who finds herself transported back and forth between modern-day L.A. and a pre-Civil War 1800s plantation in the South. “Kindred” will debut on FX on Hulu on December 13.

On October 9, attendees of the “Kindred” panel at New York Comic Con got to see an exclusive 17-minute clip from the show, followed by a Q&A with showrunner Branden Jacob-Jenkins and members of the cast. In the clip, which was from the first “Kindred” episode, Dana has just moved to L.A. and begins dating a white musician named Kevin Franklin (played by Micah Stock), who is intrigued and somewhat amused that Dana wants to write for soap opera TV shows. Dana has her first harrowing time-travel experience on the first night that she spends with Kevin in her new home.

On this mystery plantation, Dana encounters unfriendly matriarch Margaret Weylin (played by Gayle Rankin) and saves Margaret’s young son Rufus (David Alexander Kaplan) from drowning. Black characters in the “Kindred” series include Luke (played by Austin Smith), Sarah (played by Sophina Brown), and Olivia (played by Sheria Irving), who are enslaved characters on the show.

“Kindred” filmed in Georgia, and the cast members talked about although they had camaraderie while making the show, they also felt the weight and sadness of knowing that they were filming on land that used to have plantations involved in America’s shameful history of slavery. Johnson nearly choked up with tears when she said there were times on the “Kindred” set where she thought, “Oh my God, I can feel the presence of my ancestors here. It’s devastating. It’s jarring.”

The Disney Channel animated series “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” (based on the comic book series of the same name) centers on 13-year-old genius Lunella Lafayette, also known as Moon Girl (voiced by Diamond White), who accidentally brings a 10-ton T-Rex, also known as Devil Dinosaur (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), from ancient times to modern-day New York City, where she lives. Together with Lunella’s best friend/manager Casey (voiced by Libbe Barer), Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur go on a mission to protect their neighborhood from harm.

“Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” (which is already renewed for a second season) will premiere on February 10, 2023, the same date that the show’s first soundtrack will be released. Episodes will also be available on Disney+ after airing on Disney Channel. The voice cast includes Alfre Woodard as Lunella’s grandmother, Mimi; Libe Sasheer Zamata as Lunella’s mother, Adria; Jermaine Fowler as Lunella’s father, James Jr.; Gary Anthony Williams as Lunella’s grandfather, Pops; and series executive producer Laurence Fishburne in the recurring role of The Beyonder, a mysterious trickster.

Raphael Saadiq is the show’s executive music producer and chief songwriter/composer. On October 8, Saadiq and White were at “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” panel at New York Comic Con, where White performed “Moon Girl Magic,” the show’s theme song. Black people who are guest stars in the show’s first season include “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Cruz, Daveed Diggs, Jennifer Hudson, Dr. Mae Jemison, Indya Moore, Craig Robinson, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Wesley Snipes, and Tajinae Turner.

“Spawn” Movie Adds Screenwriters

Todd McFarlane at New York Comic Con on October 7, 2022. (Photo by Carla Hay)

The “Spawn” movie remake starring Jamie Foxx has been talked about and in development for years. “Spawn” creator/Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane, who had his own spotlight panel on October 7 at New York Comic Con, gave some updates on the movie. (McFarlane even played some brief and recent voice mail messages from Foxx to prove that Foxx is still committed and enthusiastic about the project.) McFarlane is still producing the movie, but he’s no longer writing and directing it. Instead, McFarlane says that the “Spawn” movie’s new director will be announced at a later date.

At New York Comic Con, McFarlane commented on the announcement that screenwriters Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matthew Mixon have been hired to co-write a new “Spawn” screenplay. Spellman and Mixon are African American. Oscar-nominated Silver is the co-writer of 2019’s “Joker” and 2024’s “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Spellman’s screenwriting credits include the TV series “Bel-Air,” “Empire,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the 2024 movie “Captain America: New World Order.” Mixon is a relative newcomer, with just two feature-length films (the 2016 documentary “Yesterday Was Everything” and the 2022 documentary “The Milwaukee Project”) so far as a filmmaker.

McFarlane said, “There’s diversity in our characters and the story. And we feel that we need voices from all different quarters.” What hasn’t changed is that McFarlane says that he wants this “Spawn” remake to be a movie franchise and one of the few comic-book-based movie series that is intended to be rated R. At the panel, McFarlane also showed some preview art for the “Batman/Spawn” crossover limited comic-book series, which is set for release on December 13, 2022.

2022 New York Comic Con: What to expect at this year’s event

The 17th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 6 to October 9, 2022, in New York City. New York Comic Con has returned to being an in-person-only event, after being a hybrid event (where people could attend in person or virtually) in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con was cancelled as an in-person event in 2020 and instead presented as a scaled-down virtual-only event. Before the pandemic, New York Comic Con attracted about 250,000 people per year since 2017, according to ReedPOP, the company that produces the event. The first New York Comic Con took place in 2006.

In 2022, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con in 2022 has less activities, panels and locations than in previous years. For example, in 2019, New York Comic Con took place at several other locations in New York City, including Hammerstein Ballroom, the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, the New York Public Library, the Way Station (in Brooklyn) and AMC 34th Street. Anime Fest (an offshoot of Anime Expo that was presented in conjunction with New York Comic Con in 2018 and 2019) will not take place at New York Comic Con in 2022. Anime Fest was also cancelled in 2021. It’s unknown at this point if Anime Fest will be revived.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in safety requirements for New York Comic Con that began in 2021. All attendees are being asked to wear a face covering/mask at all times while inside a New York Comic Con building, except when eating or drinking. However, attendees do not have to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, which were requirements in 2021.

TV shows continue to dominate the most high-profile panels and activities. New York Comic Con in 2022 has the following TV shows with panel showcases in the event’s largest rooms: CBS’s  supernatural comedy series “Ghosts” on October 6; HBO Max’s animated series “Velma” (a spinoff of the “Scooby-Doo” series) on October 6; HBO/BBC’s fantasy drama series “His Dark Materials” on October 6; Fox’s animated series “Krapopolis” on October 7; Disney+’s action series “American Born Chinese” on October 7; Prime Video’s fantasy series “Good Omens” on October 7; Crunchyroll’s anime series “Chainsaw Man”; Syfy’s horror series “Chucky”; and Disney+’s fantasy series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” on October 7. Prime Video’s fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will have a joint panel on October 7.

More TV show panels include Prime Video’s sci-fi series “The Peripheral” on October 8; Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” on October 8; Crunchyroll’s “My Hero Academia” on October 8; Netflix’s horror/fantasy series “Wednesday” (a spinoff of “The Addams Family”) on October 8; AMC’s “The Walking Dead” on October 8; Disney+’s “The Muppets Mayhem” on October 9; The WB’s “The Winchesters” on October 9; and Starz’s “The Outlander” on October 9.

Paramount+’s “Star Trek” Universe will have a multi-series panel on October 8, with stars from “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Picard” and “Star Trek: Prodigy.” HBO Max’s “Doom Patrol” and “Titans” will have a joint panel on October 9. Cartoon Network and Adult Swim’s panel on October 9 will include a sneak preview of the “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal” series with creator Genndy Tartakovsky. There will also be a “Smallville” reunion on October 8, with stars Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Kristin Kreuk and John Glover.

Most of the feature films that have panels at New York Comic Con this year are animated films and horror movies. They include the world premiere screenings of horror film “Significant Other” on October 6 and the action-comedy “Violent Night” on October 7. The horror film “V/H/S/99” will have a discussion panel and sneak preview clips on October 7. Animated films getting their own panels include “Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm” on October 6; “Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons” on October 7; “Wendell & Wild” on October 8; and “Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind” on October 8. There will also be panel discussions for “Teen Wolf: The Movie” on October 7, and the zany biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” on October 9.

In addition, New York Comic Con will have Q&As that each spotlight different actors and actresses. Two scream queens will team up when Jamie Lee Curtis (star of several “Halloween” movies) will be interviewed by Drew Barrymore (1996’s “Scream”) for a Q&A on October 8. For 1980s nostalgia, there’s a “Back to the Future” reunion panel with stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd on October 8. Oscar Isaac (who has starred in some “Star Wars” sequels, the 2021 remake of “Dune” and the Disney+ series “Moon Knight”) gets a spotlight Q&A on October 9.

Broadway stars are represented on several panels. “The Big Broadway Nerd Panel” will feature panelists Mason Alexander Park on October 6. Other panels about Broadway productions and musical theater include “#BroadwayToHollywood: A New Age of Musicals” on October 6; “Beetlejuice on Broadway” on October 7; “The Broadway Bard Party” on October 8; and “Sesame Street The Musical Panel” on October 9.

The 2022 Harvey Awards Hall of Fame ceremony will be take place during New York Comic Con on October 7. The recipients are author Neil Gaiman (“The Sandman,” “American Gods”), “Little Lulu” creator Marjorie Henderson Buell, underground cartoonist Gilbert Shelton and DC Comics/Marvel Comics writer and editor Roy Thomas.

New York Comic Con also offer specialty areas for attendees with specific identity needs. New this year at the River Pavilion is a gathering space called Asia Pop, for fans and enthusiasts of Asian pop culture. The Asia Pop center will offer discussion panels and a manga lending library. Also new this year is the Pride Lounge (located in Room 1C01-02), for people with LGBTQ interests, with some LGBTQ-themed discussion panels and guest appearances.

Family HQ (in Room 1E01-05) is a family-friendly environment, with an emphasis on activities for pre-teen children. In addition, Gaming Zone (in Room 1E) returns to offer a variety of options for gamers. The Community Lounge (located in the River Pavilion) is for informal gatherings and if attendees just need a place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the other areas of the event. Julie Plec, creator/showrunner of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Vampire Academy” TV series will be doing a special meet-up with fans in the Community Lounger on October 6, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

And, of course, there will be plenty of panels, exhibits and previews for comic books, video games, fantasy novels and other pop-culture attractions. It wouldn’t be a Comic Con without cosplaying and merchandise sales. The Cosplay Central area returns to the River Pavilion at the Javits Center. While at Cosplay Central, cosplayers can mingle, pose for photos, use the dressing rooms and attend panel discussions. The New York Comic Con finalist round for the Cosplay Central Crown Championship will take place on October 8 at Main Stage 1D Hall. New York Comic Con also has an enormous amount of merchandise for sale for numerous types of entertainment.

Review: ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife,’ starring Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor

October 9, 2021

by Carla Hay

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

Directed by Jason Reitman

Culture Representation: Taking place in the fictional U.S. city of Summerville, Oklahoma, and briefly in Chicago and New York City, the comedic horror film “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” features a predominantly white cast of characters (with a few African Americans, Asians and Latinos) representing the working-class and middle-class.

Culture Clash: The daughter and grandchildren of the late Dr. Egon Spengler (an original Ghostbuster) move to the isolated home in Summerville that they inherited from him, and they immediately have supernatural encounters with deadly entitities.

Culture Audience: Besides appealing to the obvious target audience of “Ghostbusters” fans, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” will appeal primarily to fans of people who like well-paced adventurous films that combine horror with comedy that’s suitable for most children over the age of 6.

Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Photo by Kimberley French/Columbia Pictures)

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is a “Ghostbusters” fan’s dream come true. The movie delivers almost everything that diehard fans of the franchise might want to see in a sequel. It also respects all the things that fans loved about the original “Ghostbusters” movie while introducing an exciting new storyline and appealing new characters. It’s the type of movie that is sure to win over legions of new fans to the franchise, which experienced some controversy and mixed-to-negative reviews from fans for the divisive, female-starring 2016 “Ghosbusters” reboot that was directed and co-written by Paul Feig.

Ivan Reitman, who directed 1984’s “Ghostbusters” and 1989’s “Ghostbusters II,” has been a producer of all “Ghostbusters” movies so far. For “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” he handed over the directorial duties to his son Jason Reitman, who co-wrote the “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” screenplay with Gil Kenan, a filmmaker who’s a self-professed “Ghostbusters” superfan. The result is what happens when you put true fans in charge of making a sequel to a beloved classic about ghost hunters who call themselves Ghostbusters: You give the fans what they really want. And that’s probably why “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” had its first public screening at the 2021 edition of New York Comic Con at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. After a “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” discussion panel that featured Jason Reitman, Ivan Reitman, Kenan and members of the movie’s cast, people who were in attendance got a surprise treat when the entire film was shown after the panel ended.

In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the daughter and two grandchildren of Dr. Egon Spengler (an original Ghostbuster) are at the center of the story when they find themselves involved in the same work that Egon did as a Ghostbuster in New York City. Egon was portrayed by Harold Ramis (who died of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis in 2014, at the age of 69), whose presence is definitely felt in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” Ramis was also a co-writer on the 1984 “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II.” When watching “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” fans will notice all the homages paid to these first two “Ghostbusters” movies.

Egon’s divorced daughter Callie (played by Carrie Coon), who was estranged from Egon for most of her life due to his workaholic ways, is having financial problems. It’s reached a point where Callie and her two kids, who all live in a Chicago apartment, have gotten an eviction notice from their landlord. Callie’s ex-husband, who is not seen in the movie, is not involved in raising the children. Later in the movie, Callie describes her ex-husband as a “dirtbag,” in order to leave no doubt that she doesn’t want him in her life anymore.

Instead of waiting to be evicted, Callie decides to take herself and her two kids—brainy 12-year-old Phoebe (played by Mckenna Grace) and socially awkward 15-year-old Trevor (played by Finn Wolfhard)—to the fictional small town of Summerville, Oklahoma, where Egon lived as a recluse until he died about a week before this story takes place. Even though Callie had not seen or spoken to her father in years, she inherited his run-down home. She decides to go there in person with her kids to see what to make of the place and to try to escape from her financial woes.

Egon’s home is a cluttered and dirty farmhouse located in an isolated area filled with corn fields and tall grass. Trevor quips when he looks at the dumpy condition of the house: “This is so much worse than I thought it would be.” Callie tells her children that they only plan to stay for a week while she gets some of Egon’s estate affairs in order. But there would be no “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” movie if that turned out to be true.

Before Callie, Phoebe and Trevor even arrived in Summerville, the movie shows that strange and spirits and creatures were inhabiting the area. And these sinister beings don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. There’s also an abandoned mine that was owned by the Shemdor Mining Company that plays a large role in explaining the mystery behind this story.

The mine used to be a big source of the town’s economy, but the mine was shut down years ago by the U.S. Air Force, because miners began leaping to their death in the mine shafts. Why did the U.S. Air Force get involved? It’s all explained in the movie, but viewers can figure it out as soon they hear that the U.S. Air Force and other military and federal law enforcement have had an interest in Summerville.

After Callie, Trevor and Phoebe arrive in Summerville, they find out that Egon wasn’t very well-liked by the locals, who gave him the unflattering nickname Dirt Farmer. Egon kept mostly to himself, and when he did interact with people, he was often gruff or aloof. Trevor and Phoebe never knew their grandfather Egon, but Phoebe seems more fascinated by Egon than Trevor is. During the course of the movie, viewers will see that Phoebe also inherited a lot of Egon’s analytical and personality traits. While Phoebe is very scientific-minded, Trevor is the more artistic sibling, because he is interested in filmmaking.

Callie already knows that Egon’s house is worthless. But to her dismay, she finds out that her estranged father left behind a lot of debts that she’s now responsible for paying, since she is his only heir. She tries to hide these problems from the children, but they are intuitive and are smart enough to figure out that things aren’t going so well for their family and they will be in Summerville for a while, since they have nowhere else to live rent-free.

Summerville is a quaint small town that has some characteristics of a bygone era. For example, Summerville has a drive-in diner called Spinners Roller Hop that has roller-skating servers. One of these servers is a teenager named Lucky (played by Celeste O’Connor), who immediately catches Trevor’s eye when he and his family eat at the diner one day. It’s attraction at first sight for Trevor.

Trevor is so infatuated with Lucky that he gets a job as a dishwasher at Spinners Roller Hop, in order to get to know her better. Trevor lies about his age (he says he’s 17) so that he can get the job. Callie takes a while to warm up to Trevor, and their possible romance is hinted at and teased throughout the movie. Later in the movie, Trevor does a lot of driving of a certain vehicle that “Ghostbusters” fans know and love, even though he’s not old enough to have a driver’s license.

Trevor and Callie also meet a precocious kid who’s about 12 or 13 years old. He calls himself Podcast (played by Logan Kim), because he has his own podcast where he likes to think of himself as an investigative journalist and historian for Summerville. Podcast is naturally inquisitive, and he quickly befriends Trevor and Callie. Podcast constantly carries around audio equipment with him, so he can be ready to record anything newsworthy. He’s also an aspiring paranormal investigator. How convenient.

Summerville is the type of town that doesn’t have many cops, but there are enough police officers who eventually notice some of the shenanigans that Trevor, Phoebe and Podcast get up to around town. Summerville’s Sheriff Domingo (played by Bokeem Woodbine) just happens to be Lucky’s father. Lucky ends up joining Trevor, Phoebe and Podcast in their ghostbusting activities when things get really dangerous.

Trevor isn’t the only family member to meet a potential love interest in Summerville. Carrie begins dating a seismologist named Gary Grooberson (played by Paul Rudd), who teaches at the local high school. Gary, who is a middle-aged bachelor with no children, is a little bit of a goofball nerd who would rather be a full-time scientist than be a teacher to help pay his bills. He’s so bored with teaching that one of the movie’s first scenes of Gary has him using a VCR and TV monitor in his classroom, to show old horror movies such as “Cujo (on VHS tape) to his students, as a way of babysitting them while he does other things that interest him.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is a feast of references to the first “Ghostbusters” without copying any previous “Ghostbusters” plot. Is there anyone from the previous “Ghostbusters” movies who is in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”? That information won’t be revealed in this review, although that information has already been leaked on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) and other places where people can find out the details if they really want to know. Any “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” cameos from original “Ghostbusters” cast members also have updates on what their “Ghostbusters” characters have been up to since the 1990s.

It’s not just people from the first “Ghostbusters” movie that might or might not make a re-appearance. Don’t be surprised to see any ghosts, demons and monsters that look familiar. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” also has done something hilarious and clever with the Stay Puft marshmallow presence in the movie. The visual effects for “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” are well-done and bring chills and laughs in all the right ways.

The filmmakers of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” understand that all the visual effects and scary creatures in the world wouldn’t make this movie succeed. People have to root for the main characters. And the movie delivers on featuring characters that are relatable yet find themselves in extraordinary situations. It’s a well-cast movie where all of these talented actors inhabit their character roles with a great deal of believability, even when extraordinary things are happening to their characters on screen.

In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Phoebe is portrayed as the smartest and most fearless hero of the movie, which is undoubtedly a star-making turn for Grace. Phoebe is serious about science, but she also likes to tell jokes that she knows are corny. For example, one of the jokes is: “What do a cigarette and a hamster have in common? They’re both completely harmless until you stick one in your mouth and light it on fire.”

Wolfhard also does a very credible job as Trevor, who can be adventurous or nervous, depending on the situation. Kim’s portrayal of Podcast is of someone who is endlessly curious, but he’s not a brat, which is what this character could have been but thankfully is not. Coon’s portrayal of Callie is of a concerned mother who’s trying to hold her family life together, even when things are starting to fall apart. Gary is smitten with Callie, so this infatuation is used for some lighthearted jokes in the movie.

Because “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” focuses most of the story on the adolescent characters, some people might say that the movie is trying to be like the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which also co-stars Wolfhard. But make no mistake: This is a “Ghostbusters” movie in every way. It has comedy, scary thrills and plenty of adventure and mystery that all harken back to the original “Ghostbusters,” but told from young people’s perspectives. That doesn’t mean the adult characters are sidelined in the movie, but they really are supporting characters who don’t get involved in the action until it’s absolutely necessary.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is escapist entertainment, but the movie also has some tearjerking, poignant moments, especially in the final scenes. Stick around for the mid-credits and end-credits scenes too, which will further delight fans of the original “Ghostbusters” movie. Even if people don’t see these credits scenes, it should come as no surprise that “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” already telegraphs that this film is not the end of the “Ghostbusters” movie series.

Columbia Pictures will release “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in U.S. cinemas on November 19, 2021.

Anthrax and Public Enemy’s Chuck D celebrate ‘Bring the Noise’ anniversary and Z2 Comics collaborations at 2021 New York Comic Con

In 1991, heavy metal band Anthrax and rap group Public Enemy (both New York-based acts) released their groundbreaking single “Bring the Noise,” which helped usher in and influence a musical movement of artists blending hard rock/heavy metal and rap. Artists such as Korn, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock (in his early career) owe a lot to how “Bring the Noise” laid the groundwork for the rap/heavy metal hybrid. The Anthrax/Public Enemy version of “Bring the Noise” was a remake of Public Enemy’s 1988 song “Bring the Noise.” Aerosmith and Run-DMC’s 1986 hit “Walk This Way” (which was a cover version of Aerosmith’s 1975 hit “Walk This Way”) was also an influence in merging rap and rock, but “Walk This Way” was more pop-leaning hard rock than heavy metal.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Bring the Noise,” Public Enemy leader Chuck D and the current members of Anthrax did a panel discussion together at the 2021 edition of New York Comic Con, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Chuck D and members of Anthrax are also comic book enthusiasts and have collaborated with Z2 Comics to release graphic novels. Anthrax’s graphic novel “Among the Living” (named after the band’s 1987 album) was released in July 2021. Chuck D worked with Z2 Comics on the graphic novel “Apocalypse 91: The Revolution Never Sleeps” (released in June 2021), inspired by Public Enemy’s 1991 album “Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black.”

Chuck D, Anthrax rhythm guitarist Scott Ian, Anthrax lead singer Joey Belladonna, Anthrax bass player Frank Bello, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and Anthrax lead guitarist Jonathan Donias gathered for a lively panel discussion at New York Comic Con. After the panel discussion, Anthrax and Chuck D headed over the Z2 Comics booth in exhibition area, where they signed autographs (Anthrax signed copies of the “Among the Living”), posed for fan photos and took questions from fans. Here are some of the highlights from the Anthrax/Chuck D panel discussion.

How and when did you get into comics?

Chuck D: I was born in 1960. So when Marvel started, it was the first thing I recognized, along with all the superheroes of DC [Comics]. Back when I was growing up, it was DC and Marvel. When I was in first grade in 1966, the amazing thing was Marvel had quasi-animation on [television] … I remember they had Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Spider-Man. Comics were 12 cents [back then]. I was like, “Wow,” this matches up with the television [shows]. It was a great beginning.

I actually competed and drew my own comic books, but I also bought comic books. I didn’t front on Superman. He wasn’t corny. He was on TV. And then Batman came out on TV in 1966—Adam West and those dudes.

And then, the thing that really bit me, it wasn’t a comic, but “Star Trek” came out in 1967. I was 7, going on 8. That was really something. Those were the things that kind of took my imagination to the next realm.

I was growing up as a black kid in Queens. At the same time, you had Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. All that was going on with real people. It was also in that swirl that you could dare to dream and imagine. Muhammad Ali, he went from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali, so he took on a superhero name.

Scott Ian: I still remember all the theme songs from those Marvel shows … My son knows those songs too … For me, it was similar to Chuck. [We’re] almost the same age. Growing up in Queens, I had an uncle who was 10 years older than me. When I would go over to his house, I would rifle through [his comic books].

Even before I could read, I would just sit there and look at the pictures of the Fantastic Four and Thor and Conan [the Barbarian]. That’s basically the first stuff I ever read was comic books. I credit [Marvel Comics iconic writer] Stan Lee with teaching me how to read. I was a card-carrying member on the Merry Marvel Marching Society in the 1960s … Comics is the most constant thing from the earliest age of my life.

Charlie Benante: I was on the opposite side. I was drawing the comics instead of reading them. I couldn’t wait to get the latest Hulk comic or Spider-Man comic, and learn how to draw from them. That art, that was inspiring to me. That’s all I cared about back then.

Like Chuck said about the TV shows, it was such a great thing to see them [the comic book characters] moving. The music in those shows was so awesome. Everything was great about those days.

Frank Bello: Growing up in the same household as Charlie [Editor’s note: Bello is Benante’s nephew] and watching him—I’m going to kiss his ass right now—I don’t know if you guys know this, but he’s a great artist. He does most of our artwork.

Growing up in that house and seeing the talent he had—this was even before music—just watching it got me into it. And, of course, the [TV] shows, they were great. I love that stuff. That’s a fantasy world we all need. It’s still important today.

Benante: It’s crazy how Judge Dredd came into the mix of music and comics. Scott would take if from there. Judge Dredd was such an amazing figure, to write about him. I remember the first time we played England, it was so huge. People were like “This is the greatest thing you guys have done.”

Ian: [He says jokingly] It was all planned … I was a huge Judge Dredd fan. I just remember hearing for the first time, Charlie had these riffs that became the [Anthrax] song “I Am the Law” [from the “Among the Living” album]. It sounded like a superhero theme song. It just clicked in my head.

Joey Belladonna: I like the [comic book] art. I’m with Charlie on the art. I got lucky. I moved Scott’s comics from one of his apartments. That was a lot of work. I couldn’t believe how heavy those boxes were.

Jonathan Donias: I’ve got to be honest. I don’t know much about comics. I had a Guns N’Roses comic as a kid.

How did your collaboration with Z2 Comics come together?

Benante: We tried to do a comic book for years. I always say that the last couple of [Anthrax] album covers were telling a story … And then COVID-19 hit. Josh [Frankel, publisher/owner of Z2 Comics] contacted us and said it would be a great idea to do a comic about the “Among the Living” album, but don’t take the songs the way that they were written on the record. Let people write their own story around the title. I was so excited about that. And everybody else was like, “Let’s do this.”

Ian: Yeah, we’d been asked to do a comic forever. And we’d always say no, because it’s always cheesy. They want to turn us into superheroes. I never want it to be us in the comic book. Anything we ever saw, or anything we were ever pitched [before Z2 Comics], was terrible. As someone who is a fan of that world, I just want it to be good.

When that idea was pitched to us: What if we have different writers take a song and see how it feels to them see what they take from that song? I was like, “Okay, I really like that idea, but here’s the wish list of people. Because if we can’t get the people we want, I still won’t want to do it, because I’m not writing it.” The first name on the list was Grant Morrison. I figured, “We’ll aim high.” And Grant said yes.

2021 New York Comic Con: What to expect at this year’s event

October 4, 2021

by Carla Hay

The 16th annual New York Comic Con takes place October 7 to October 10, 2021, in New York City. For the first time, New York Comic Con will be a hybrid event, where people can attend in person or virtually.

In 2021, New York Comic Con’s main hub remains the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Comic Con in 2021 has less activities, panels and locations than in previous years. For example, in 2019, New York Comic Con took place at several other locations in New York City, including Hammerstein Ballroom, the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, the New York Public Library, the Way Station (in Brooklyn) and AMC 34th Street. Anime Fest (an offshoot of Anime Expo that was presented in conjunction with New York Comic Con in 2018 and 2019) will not take place at New York Comic Con in 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in new safety requirements for New York Comic Con. All attendees ages 12 and up must show proof of vaccination. Attendees younger than age 12 must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated guardian and provide proof of either a negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test taken within six hours of entry to each day of the event,  or a negative lab PCR COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of entry of each day of the event.

Checkpoints have been set up at or near the Javits Center for attendees to obtain wristbands indicating that people have shown proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. No one can be admitted into New York Comic Con without these wristbands. The checkpoint locations and open hours can be found here. All attendees must wear a face covering at all times while inside a New York Comic Con building, except when eating or drinking.

TV shows continue to dominate the most high-profile panels and activities. New York Comic Con in 2021 has the following TV shows with in-person panel showcases: Amazon Prime Video’s  superhero series “The Boys” on October 8; USA Network’s and Syfy’s horror series”Chucky” on October 8; Starz’s fantasy drama series “Outlander” on October 9; Paramount+’s sci-fi series “Star Trek: Discovery” on October 9;  FX’s sci-fi series “Y: The Last Man” on October 9; and FX’s vampire horror comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows” on October 10.

There are very few feature films that have panels at New York Comic Con this year. The movie panel that is expected to get the biggest crowd is Columbia Pictures’ “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” on October 8, featuring in-person appearances by director Jason Reitman, producer Ivan Reitman (who directed the first two “Ghostbusters” movies) and members of the “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” cast. Amazon Prime Video’s 2021 installment of its “Welcome to the Blumhouse” movie anthology horor series has a virtual-only panel on October 7. Funimation will have two in-person movie panels featuring the English-language voice cast members: “My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission” on October 8 and “Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train” on October 10.

In addition, New York Comic Con will have one-on-one Q&As that each spotlight a different actor: William Shatner (“Star Trek”) on October 7; George Takei (“Star Trek”) on October 8; and David Harbour (“Stranger Things,” “Black Widow”) on October 9. Meanwhile, in a virtual-only, pre-recorded Q&A on October 8, “Game of Thrones” alum Emilia Clarke discusses her comic book writing debut, “M.O.M.: Mother of Madness.”

Broadway stars are represented on several panels. “The Big Broadway Nerd Panel” will feature panelists such as Anthony Rapp (“Rent”) and James M. Iglehart (“Aladdin”) on October 8. Other Broadway-related panels include “The Broadway Bard Party” on October 9; “E-Ticket to Broadway” Podcast LIVE at Comic Con!” on October 9; “#BroadwayToHollywood: A New Age of Musicals” on October 10; and “Broadway’s A.J. Holmes: Creating One-Man Musical Yeah, But Not Right Now” on October 10.

The 2021 Harvey Awards Hall of Fame ceremony will be livestreamed during New York Comic Con on October  8. The recipients are manga artist Rumiko Takahashi (“Urusei Yatsura,” “Inuyasha”), horror illustrator Bernie Wrightson (“Swamp Thing”), painter and cover artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones, award-winning comic book artist Barry Windsor-Smith (“Conan the Barbarian,” “Weapon X”), and Michael Kaluta (“The Shadow,” “Starstruck”).

And, of course, there will be plenty of panels, exhibits and previews for comic books, video games, fantasy novels and other pop-culture attractions. It wouldn’t be a Comic Con without cosplaying and merchandise sales. The Cosplay Central area returns in a new location: on Level 1 in Room 1A02 (right across from Artist Alley) at the Javits Center. While at Cosplay Central, cosplayers can mingle, pose for photos, use the dressing rooms and attend panel discussions. New York Comic Con also has an enormous amount of merchandise for sale for numerous types of entertainment.
