Nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards were announced today recognizing a host of groundbreaking new programs and up-and coming talent, along with beloved performers and hit shows that have been integral in helping television viewers navigate a changing world. The live ceremony, reimagined as a virtual event due to production restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, was hosted by “Supermarket Sweep” star and “Saturday Night Live” alumnus Leslie Jones with presenters Laverne Cox (“Inventing Anna”), Josh Gad (“Central Park”), Tatiana Maslany (“Perry Mason”) and Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma. HBO’s “Watchmen” took the top spot for program nominations with 26 followed by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (20), “Ozark” (18), “Succession” (18), “The Mandalorian” (15), “Schitt’s Creek” (15), “Saturday Night Live” (15) and “The Crown” (13).

“Despite the unprecedented challenges facing the entertainment industry, it has been an extraordinary year for television,” said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma. “Television has inspired, united and comforted a global audience this season. 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards: ‘Parasite,’ ‘The Crown,’ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ ‘Fosse/Verdon’ win the top prizes in their fields

January 19, 2020

by Carla Hay

Neon’s South Korean drama “Parasite,” Netflix’s British royalty drama series “The Crown” and Amazon Prime Video’s retro American comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were the top winners in their fields at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 19, 2020. TNT and TBS had the live U.S. telecast of the show, which did not have a host. However, comedic actor Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy appeared on stage multiple times during the show to give introductions.

“Parasite” made SAG Awards history by being the first non-English-language film to win the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. “The Crown” received the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” got the prizes for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, while “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” co-star Tony Shalhoub won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.

There was no one movie or TV show that dominated at the award ceremony, since the prizes were spread out, with the winning movies and TV shows getting one or two prizes each. Columbia Pictures’ drama “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” went into the ceremony with four nominations each. Lionsgate’s sexual-harassment film “Bombshell” and Netflix’s mobster drama “The Irishman,” also had four nominations each, but ultimately didn’t win an SAG Awards.

Renée Zellweger of “Judy was awarded Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Brad Pitt of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. Laura Dern of “Marriage Story” received the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

In the TV categories, other top winners included FX’s limited series “Fosse/Verdon,” which swept the TV movie/mini series categories. The biographical story of husband-and-wife dance team Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon garnered SAG Awards for Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams, the lead actors who played Fosse and Verdon in the series.

For its final season, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” won two SAG Awards: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series (for Peter Dinklage) and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series. Jennifer Aniston of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” received the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, the first SAG Award for Apple’s streaming service. Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

Presenters included Jason Bateman, Millie Bobby Brown, Sterling K. Brown, Steve Buscemi, Gabrielle Carteris, Gwendoline Christie, Glenn Close, Choi Woo Shik, Kaitlyn Dever, Daveed Diggs, Taron Egerton America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, Roman Griffin Davis, Danai Gurira, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jharrel Jerome, Harvey Keitel, Nicole Kidman, Lee Jung Eun, Lee Sun Kyun, Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Lupita Nyong’o, Park So Dam, Pedro Pascal, Anna Paquin, Lili Reinhart, Margot Robbie, Ray Romano, Song Kang Ho Charlize Theron, Sophie Turner, Taika Waititi and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards: ‘Bombshell,’ ‘The Irishman,’ ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ are the top nominees

December 11, 2019

by Carla Hay

With four nominations each, Lionsgate’s sexual-harassment film “Bombshell,” Netflix’s mob drama “The Irishman,” Columbia Pictures’ Manson Family murder drama “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Amazon Prime Video’s comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are the top contenders at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 19, 2020. TNT and TBS will have the live U.S. telecast of the show.

“Bombshell” earned nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture; Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role (for Charlize Theron); Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (for Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie).

“The Irishman” got nods for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture; Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci); and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” received nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture; Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role (for Leonardo DiCaprio); Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (for Brad Pitt); and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” picked up nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series; Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series (for Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein); and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series (for Tony Shalhoub). The SAG Awards do not have supporting actor/supporting actress categories for TV shows.

Also getting multiple nominations, with three nods each, are Netflix’s divorce movie “Marriage Story,” Apple TV+’s drama series “The Morning Show” and Netflix’s drama series “The Crown.”

Several actors received three nominations each at the SAG Awards this year: Johansson is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role (for “Marriage Story”), Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (for “Jojo Rabbit”), and she is among the nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (for “Jojo Rabbit”). “Bombshell” co-stars Robbie and Kidman are also nominated for three SAG Awards each. In addition to their individual and cast nominations for “Bombshell,” Robbie is among the cast nominated for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” while Kidman is among the ensemble nominated for HBO’s “Big Little Lies.” Pacino has cast nominations (for being in “The Irishman” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), in addition to his individual nomination for “The Irishman.”

Snubs and Surprises

Antonio Banderas in “Pain and Glory” (Photo courtesy of El Deseo)

Although “Marriage Story” scored three individual nominations (for lead actor Adam Driver, lead actress Scarlett Johansson and supporting actress Laura Dern), the movie was shut out of the category Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.  Conversely, “The Irishman” got a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, but its lead actor (Robert De Niro) was snubbed by not getting a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. However, De Niro will be receiving the Life Achievement Award (a non-competitive prize) at the SAG Awards this year, so he’s guaranteed to get an award at the show anyway. De Niro’s sometime co-star Leonardo DiCaprio will be presenting the Life Achievement Award to him.

These movies were completely shut out of the SAG Awards this year, even though they’ve been winning acting awards elsewhere: A24’s “The Farewell,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “Pain and Glory,” Columbia Pictures’ “Little Women,” A24’s “Waves,” Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Richard Jewell” and A24’s “Uncut Gems.”

In television, the biggest snub was for the FX drama series “Pose,” which didn’t get a SAG nomination this year, despite receiving several Emmy nominations, including an Emmy win for lead actor Billy Porter. Also snubbed were the broadcast TV networks, since NBC’s “The Is Us” was the only broadcast network show to get a SAG nomination this year: “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown picked up a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. All the other TV nominees are for shows on cable networks or streaming services. Meanwhile, previous SAG nominee/Emmy winner Henry Winkler of HBO’s “Barry” didn’t get a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series this year, but Andrew Scott of Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag” got a surprise nomination in the category.

One of the biggest surprises is the strong showing for Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Jojo Rabbit,” the Nazi satire that has gotten mixed reviews and hasn’t been getting nominations for its cast at a lot of other award shows. The movie is among the nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, edging out “Marriage Story,” which was widely predicted to be nominated in that category. But someone who benefits either way is Johansson, who’s nominated for both movies.

Another big surprise was Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” getting two nominations in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Billy Crudup was expected to be nominated, but co-star Steve Carell was not. Meanwhile, in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, Reese Witherspoon of “The Morning Show” was snubbed in favor of co-star Jennifer Aniston. However, Witherspoon got an expected nomination as part of the ensemble for HBO’s “Big Little Lies.” Another noticeable snub was Sandra Oh of BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” who was edged out in favor of co-star Jodie Comer.

Diversity and Inclusion

There is very little racial diversity among the SAG Award nominees this year. The movie casts and TV ensembles that received group nominations are predominantly white, and people of color are only 14% of the 50 nominees in the SAG Award categories for individuals. People of color are about 28% of the U.S. population, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and that number is expected to be much higher for the 2020 U.S. Census.

The black nominees in the movie categories for individuals are Cynthia Erivo for Focus Features’ “Harriet” and Lupita Nyong’o for Universal Pictures’ “Us” (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role) and Jamie Foxx for Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Just Mercy” (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role). The TV categories for individuals have the aforementioned Brown for “This Is Us” ; Mahershala Ali for HBO’s “True Detective”; and Jharrel Jerome for Netflix’s “When They See Us.”

In the SAG Award categories for groups, the nominated  casts/ensembles are large, but usually have only a few people of color, and they’re usually black. Such is the case with Caleb McLaughlin and Priah Ferguson of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” Zoe Kravitz of “Big Little Lies,” Kirby Howell-Baptiste of HBO’s “Barry” and Nathalie Emmanuel for HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” has the highest number of black people (four) of all the nominated ensembles: The nominated black actors in “The Handmaid’s Tale” ensemble are Samira Wiley,  O.T. Fagbenle, Ashleigh LaThrop and Bahia Watson.

Asians are represented the most with Neon’s South Korean drama “Parasite,” which received only one nomination: Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Meanwhile, there is some Asian representation in the nominated casts of “Jojo Rabbit” (director/co-star Taika Waititi is of Māori descent) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which includes Korean American actor Mike Moh. In the TV categories, the nominated ensemble of “Barry” includes Polynesian American actress Patricia Fa’asua and Turkish American actor Troy Caylak, while “The Handmaid’s Tale” has Serbian Canadian actress Nina Kiri, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has Chinese American actress Stephanie Hsu, “Game of Thrones” has Indian Russian actor Staz Nair and “The Kominsky Method” has Chinese American actress Melissa Tang.

Latinos had very little representation among the nominees: “Hustlers” co-star Jennifer Lopez (who is Puerto Rican American) got a nomination for supporting actress, and Venezuelan actor Alejandro “Alex” Furth is among the nominated ensemble for “Barry.” Native Americans, who are always underrepresented in entertainment, were shut out of the SAG Awards this year. The LGBTQ community is represented primarily by straight actors playing gay characters, most notably Taron Egerton in Paramount Pictures’ Elton John musical biopic “Rocketman,” nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. The nominated “Jojo Rabbit” cast includes Sam Rockwell and Alfie Allen playing closeted gay Nazis. Meanwhile, “Bombshell” actresses Robbie and Kate McKinnon (who is an out lesbian in real life) play Fox News co-workers who are secret lovers.

Revlon introduces The Marvelous Super Lustrous Collection, inspired by ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’

July 10, 2019

The following is a press release from Revlon:

Revlon introduces The Marvelous Super Lustrous Collection, a special limited-edition lipstick collection in collaboration with the award-winning Amazon Original series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Available exclusively on Amazon.com just in time for National Lipstick Month, the collection features two curated sets of high-impact, super moisturizing Super Lustrous Lipstick. Take The Stage Reds features three show-stopping shades in Fire & Ice, Certainly Red, and Cherries in the Snow – which was recommended by Midge in Season 1. Stand-Up Nudes includes three universally flattering nudes for a classic complement to any look with Pink Truffle, Blushing Mauve and Rum Raisin.

From Midge Maisel to Rose Weissman, the women of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are meticulous about their beauty routines, which include freshly coiffed hair and a seemingly endless array of lip colors complementing their perfectly tailored outfits. Midge’s own bold choices are a hallmark of the show and reflect her trailblazing spirit as she finds her own path to independence in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Revlon’s iconic Fire & Ice campaign debuted around the same time, marking the first time women were encouraged to wear makeup for themselves as a mode of self-expression. It was an impactful cultural moment and complements Revlon’s presence in the show as one of Midge’s favorite beauty brands. What fan can forget her recommendation of Cherries in the Snow and Raven Red to a shopper while browsing the Revlon counter in season 1 and her excitement when she finally lands a job at the prestigious Revlon counter in season 2.

2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards: ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Ozark,’ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ are the leading nominees

December 12, 2018

by Carla Hay

Scree Actors Guild Awards

With four nominations each, the 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born” and the TV series “Ozark” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are the top nominees for the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will be presented at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 27, 2019. TNT and TBS will have the U.S. telecast of the show, which will be hosted by Megan Mullally.  “A Star Is Born,” “Ozark” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” each received nominations for the cast/ensemble categories, as well as for three actors in each project: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott for “A Star Is Born”; Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner for “Ozark”; and Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Following close behind in nominations, with three nods each, are the period movies “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite,” as well as the TV series “Barry,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “GLOW” and “The Kominsky Method.” Two actors received a nomination for a movie and a TV show for 2018: Emma Stone for “The Favourite” and “Maniac” and Amy Adams for “Vice” and “Sharp Objects.”

Eligible movies were those that were newly released in U.S. theaters in 2018, while eligible TV shows were those which had new episodes that were televised in prime-time on U.S. networks in 2018. The Screen Actors Guild votes for the awards. Emmy-winning actor Alan Alda will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award at the 2019 ceremony.

Movie Snubs and Surprises

The biggest snub in the movie categories was for “The Favourite,” which did not get a nomination for Best Cast in a Motion Picture, even though the three main stars of the movie (Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) picked up individual SAG nominations. Instead, “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” which did not get any nominations in any of the categories for individual actors, managed to get nominated for Best Cast in a Motion Picture. The SAG Award winner for Best Cast in a Motion Picture almost always has someone in the cast with an individual nomination for the same movie, so the chances are very slim that “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” will win the award. Meanwhile, a surprise nomination that was not widely predicted was “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best Cast in a Motion Picture, while the widely predicted “Vice” was shut out of that category. Both movies have at least one member of the cast member nominated in the individual categories.

The SAG Awards completely snubbed “Roma,” “First Reformed,” “Eighth Grade” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which have been racking up awards with critics and shows that honor independent films. In particular, Regina King of “If Beale Street Could Talk” has been winning supporting actress awards at almost every show that she’s been getting nominations for the movie, but the SAG Awards won’t be on that list. The biggest surprise nominations are in the supporting female actor category, which had nods for Emily Blunt of “A Quiet Place” and Margot Robbie for “Mary Queen of Scots,” who previously were not getting nominated at major award shows for their roles in these movies. Blunt is also nominated for her lead role in “Mary Poppins Returns.” Meanwhile, previous SAG winner Nicole Kidman, whose name is frequently mentioned as a possible nominee for “Destroyer” and “Boy Erased,” did not receive any SAG nominations this time around.

TV Snubs and Surprises

“The Americans,” which had its final season in 2018, received a SAG ensemble nomination, but lead actors Matthew Rhys (who won an Emmy for the role this year) and Keri Russell were snubbed for individual SAG nominations. The SAG Awards have supporting actor categories for movies, but not for TV shows, so supporting actors in TV shows often get nominated in the same categories as the lead actors, as is the case with supporting female actor Borstein of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” supporting female actor Garner of “Ozark” and supporting male actor Henry Winkler of “Barry,” who was nominated alongside “Barry” lead actor Bill Hader.  Rhys and Russell of “The Americans,” Donald Glover of “Atlanta,” Regina King of “Seven Seconds,” Laura Dern of “The Tale,” and Issa Rae of “Insecure” are among the several lead actors who were shut out of individual SAG nominations this year, and could have been nominated in the categories for individuals if the SAG Awards had separate categories for supporting actors.

“House of Cards” has been ignored by Golden Globe voters for the show’s final two seasons (probably because of the scandals caused by former “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey), but “House of Cards” picked up a SAG nomination this year for lead female actor Robin Wright. Other shows that received SAG nominations but were completely snubbed by the Golden Globes for 2018 were “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “Grace and Frankie.” Conversely, shows that received Golden Globe nominations but were shut out of the SAG Awards for 2018 included “Homecoming,” “Pose,” “Seven Seconds,” “The Tale,” “Bodyguard,” “Will & Grace” and “Kidding.” Meanwhile, Bill Pullman received a SAG nomination (the first SAG nod of his career) for the limited series “The Sinner,” but widely predicted nominee Benedict Cumberbatch of the limited series “Patrick Melrose” (who received an Emmy nod for the role) was shut out of nominations for the SAG Awards and Golden Globes.

Here is the complete list of nominations for the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards:

ROMA

Marking the 19th chapter in the American Film Institute’s ongoing almanac of the moving image, the 2018 entries join a notable group of previous AFI AWARDS honorees — works of significance that contribute to the rich cultural legacy and define the state of the art form. View all past AFI AWARDS honorees here.

AFI AWARDS selections are made through a jury process where AFI Trustees, scholars, artists and critics determine the year’s most outstanding achievements and provide contextual rationales for each selection.

This year’s juries — one for film and one for television — were chaired by AFI Board of Trustees Vice Chairs Tom Pollock (former Vice Chairman of MCA, Chairman of Universal Pictures) for film and Richard Frank (former Chairman of Walt Disney Television, President of Walt Disney Studios, President of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) for television. The juries featured acclaimed artists such as David Benioff, Joan Chen, Courtney B. Vance and Alfre Woodard; renowned authors and scholars representing prestigious universities with recognized motion picture arts and television programs; film historian Leonard Maltin; the AFI Board of Trustees; and film and television critics from media outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, Variety and The Washington Post.

Honorees will gather on January 4, 2019, for recognition at the annual AFI AWARDS private luncheon in Los Angeles, CA — an event favored by the entertainment community for its informal intimacy and its inclusive acknowledgement of excellence. At the luncheon, AFI will present jury rationales providing artistic and cultural context for the selection of each honoree.

The AFI AWARDS luncheon will be sponsored by Audi, a supporter of AFI and its programs for the past 15 years. The AFI AWARDS luncheon is also sponsored by American Airlines, the official airline of AFI.
