Oscar- and Tony-winning actor Kevin Spacey will host the 71st Annual Tony Awards, which are set to take place June 11, 2017.  CBS will have the U.S. telecast of the show, which will take place at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The nominations, presenters and performers are to be announced. This will be Spacey’s first time hosting the Tony Awards, the most prestigious awards for Broadway shows. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for his performance in “Lost in Yonkers” in 1991.

From 2004 to 2015, Spacey served as the Artistic Director of The Old Vic Theatre Company in London. During his time there, he appeared on stage in productions of “National Anthems,” “The Philadelphia Story,” “Speed the Plow,” “Inherit the Wind,” “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” and the acclaimed production of the one-man show “Darrow.” Spacey won the Evening Standard and Olivier Awards for Best Actor for his role in “The Iceman Cometh.” He also starred in the Broadway and West End productions of “Long Day’s Journey into Night,” opposite his mentor Jack Lemmon, as well as the title role in the Sam Mendes production of “Richard III,” which toured 12 cities around the world as part of the three-year Old Vic/BAM/Bridge Project.

Spacey has two Oscars: one for Best Actor for his role in 1999’s “American Beauty,” and the other for Best Supporting Actor for his  role in 1995’s “The Usual Suspects.” He also has several Emmy nominations for his starring role in Netflix’s “House of Cards.”

The Tony Awards are collaboration between the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League.

SESAC hosted its 21st annual Pop Awards at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on April 13, 2017. SESAC’s Charli XCX (PRS) was named Songwriter of the Year and earned the Song of the Year award for penning the chart-topping “Same Old Love,” recorded by Selena Gomez. Sony ATV Sounds was named Publisher of the Year. In addition to this year, Charli XCX was honored in 2014 with SESAC Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for the hit “I Love It,” recorded by Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX.  Most recently, Charli XCX released the ten-song mixtape “Angel” to rave reviews, with one critic saying the artist continues to be “the one to watch.”

Sirius XM radio host Bevy Smith, Rolling Stone contributing editor Joe Levy and veteran entertainment journalist John Norris served as presenters during the awards show, which featured a performance by Jaheim of “Struggle Love,” written by SESAC honoree Bale’Wa Muhammad.

Headlining the evening with a lively and unforgettable performance was SESAC Legacy Award recipient George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic. The founder of iconic rap group Public Enemy, Mr. Chuck D, presented George Clinton with the SESAC Legacy Award.

2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Pearl Jam, Journey, Yes, Tupac Shakur, ELO, Joan Baez, Nile Rodgers inducted; Chuck Berry, Prince given tributes

The 32nd Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony—which took place April 7, 2017, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York—featured several on-stage reunions for inductees such as Journey, Yes and Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), which have all had numerous lineup changes over the years. Highlights of the show will be televised in a special that premieres on HBO on April 29, 2017, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. An exhibit for the 2017 inductees went on display March 31 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. More than 900 voters picked inductees, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Artists are eligible for inclusion 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Here’s a rundown of the ceremony:

ELO

Jeff Lynne of ELO at the 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 7, 2017. (Photo by Kevin Kane/WireImage for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

Band members inducted: Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Roy Wood, Richard Tandy. (Tandy and Bevan did not attend the ceremony for reasons that have not been publicly disclosed.)

Inducted by: Dhani Harrison, son of George Harrison. ELO leader Jeff Lynne worked with George Harrison several times as a producer and as a fellow member of the Traveling Wilburys.

Songs performed: “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Evil Woman,” “Mr.  Blue Sky”

One of ELO’s earliest hits was the band’s 1972 cover version of Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven,” so it was fitting that the band played the song as a tribute to Berry who died on March 18, 2017, at the age of 90.  Lynne accepted the induction award on stage with ELO co-founder Roy Wood, who quit the band in 1972, a year after the band’s first album was released. Wood and Lynne have not appeared on stage together in decades. Wood, however, did not perform at the ceremony.

Lynne has been recording and touring as the leader of Jeff Lynne’s ELO since 2014. Tandy is a member of Jeff Lynne’s ELO, while Bevan formed the spinoff band ELO Part II in the 1980s, after ELO’s most successful lineup disbanded. ELO has been revived off and on over the years; there was a short-lived revival in 2001 and the group was revived again in 2014, with Lynne and Tandy as the only original members.

Joan Baez

Inducted by: Jackson Browne

Songs performed: “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Deportee” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” For the latter two songs, Baez was joined on stage by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Indigo Girls guitarist Amy Ray.

Steve Howe of Yes at the 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on April 7, 2017. (Photo by Kevin Kane/WireImage for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

Members inducted: Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Alan White

Inducted by: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush, a band heavily influenced by Yes’ brand of progressive rock.

Songs performed: “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Roundabout.” Yes was joined on stage for the performance by former lead singer Anderson and Rush’s Lee.

2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards: ‘Get Out’ receives the most nominations

April 6, 2017

MTV Movie and TV Awards

The following is an excerpt from an MTV press release:

MTV today announced the categories and nominees for the first-ever 2017 “MTV Movie & TV Awards,” celebrating the actors, stories and moments that defined pop culture in the past year. Fans can begin voting immediately at MTV.com. Comedian, film and TV star Adam Devine will host young Hollywood’s party of the year LIVE from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Calif. on Sunday, May 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

“MTV is about celebrating youth culture and fueling our audience’s passion points,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV, VH1 and Logo. “We are thrilled to have Adam Devine as our master of ceremonies for the new MTV Movie and TV Awards where we honor the best stories, actors and characters our audience loves.”

Breakout horror film, “Get Out,” leads the pack with six nominations including Movie of the Year (Presented by Toyota C-HR), Best Villain, Best Fight Against the System. The film’s star, David Kaluuya, secures his first-ever major U.S. award show nods for Best Actor in a Movie, Next Generation and Best Duo with Lil Rel Howery. Additional leading nominees include “Beauty and the Beast” and “Stranger Things” with four, as well as “Atlanta,” “Game of Thrones,” “Hidden Figures,” “Logan,” “Moonlight” and “This Is Us,” scoring three nods each.

This year’s nominations include transformations of both categories fans have come to expect as well as the introduction of new ones. While fan favorites like Best Kiss, Best Hero, Best Villain and more remain, MTV has collapsed the divide between film, television and streaming series, instead nominating the best performances no matter the screen. Also for the first time, the former Best Actor and Best Actress categories have been replaced with non-gendered Best Actor in a Movie and Best Actor in a Show.

Among the most iconic categories, Best Fight has been modernized to Best Fight the System reflecting the audience’s increasing awareness and activism around broader social justice issues. In addition, MTV is introducing new and timely categories including: Best American Story, awarded to the show or film that showcases America at its most open and diverse; Tearjerker, awarded to the scene that most illuminates the emotional connection people feel to characters; Best Host, highlighting the cross-section of personalities speaking to young people today; Best Reality Competition and Next Generation. Additional categories will be revealed closer to the show.

Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and Thomas Rhett were among the big winners at the 52nd Annual Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, which took place April 2, 2017, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Aldean won Entertainer of the Year. Rhett won Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year. Lambert won Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year. Florida Georgia Line and Brothers Osbourne also won two ACM Awards each: Florida Georgia Line won Single of the Year (for “H.O.L.Y.”) and Vocal Event of the Year (for “May We All” featuring  Tim McGraw). Brothers Osbourne won for Best New Duo or Group (an award that was announced before the show took place) and Best Duo of the Year. Keith Urban went into the show with the most nominations (seven) as an individual but didn’t win any of those ACM Awards . However, he technically won an ACM Award for being a part of the all-star group Artists of Then, Now & Forever, which won the prize for Video Event of the Year.

Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley hosted the ACM Awards for the second year in a row. The two stars joked around (including doing a bit with a wax figure of Bryan) and performed multiple times on the show, as solo artists and as part of a collaboration with other artists.  At the beginning of the show, Bryan and Bentley teamed up with Joe Walsh to perform “Johnny B. Goode” as a tribute to the late Chuck Berry. CBS had the live U.S. telecast of the show, which was produced by Dick Clark Productions and ACM. The ACM’s professional membership selects the nominees and winners of the ACM Awards.

Other performers at the show included Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Lambert, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Backstreet Boys, Florida Georgia Line, Brothers Osbourne, Jon Pardi, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt, Rascal Flatts, Rhett, Reba McEntire, Lauren Daigle, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Swindell, Carrie Underwood and Urban.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Awards counts for artists reflect categories in which they have been recognized as individuals or as part of their duo or group. In some cases, an artist may receive more than one nomination which factors into their official count. For example, Keith Urban received two nominations in the Album of the Year category—one each as artist and producer—because that category recognizes both.

MTV revamps movie award show to add TV categories, launches fan fest for the show

March 13, 2017

MTV Movie & TV Awards

MTV has changed its annual movie award show by adding TV categories. The inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards will be televised live on MTV from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on May 7, 2017, at 8 p.m. ET. The show’s host, nominations, performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.

According to a press release from MTV, in the lead-up to the live show on May 7, fans will be treated to the inaugural Movie & Television Festival.  Live musical acts, special guests and food will transform the area outside of the Shrine Auditorium into a massive, daylong party.  The afternoon will culminate with attendees getting a front-row spot for viewing celebrity red-carpet arrivals for the evening’s main event.  Ticketing details and a full list of performers will be announced at a later date.

Casey Patterson will serve as executive producer, with MTV’s Garrett English for the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Melanie Block is executive in charge of production. Wendy Plaut serves as co-executive producer and executive in charge of celebrity talent.  Amani Duncan is executive in charge of music talent.

The MTV Movie Awards began in 1992. The awards are voted for by fans in MTV’s primarily youth-oriented target audience. The show has tended to focus on movies that appeal to teens and people in their 20s. The event also features musical performances from current hitmaking artists.
