Dick Clark Productions and ABC today announced multi-platinum selling artist Post Malone will perform from a stop on his current tour in Brooklyn, NY as part of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019.” Airing just after the midnight countdown, Malone will be the first television performance of 2019. It will also mark Malone’s first time performing on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” America’s biggest celebration of the year will take place on MONDAY, DECEMBER 31 beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST on the ABC Television Network.
Ranked as the #1 music special of last year, “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019” marks the 47th anniversary of America’s largest celebration of the year and will include 5 ½ hours of special performances and reports on New Year’s celebrations from around the globe. Ryan Seacrest will host the primetime festivities and lead the traditional countdown to midnight from Times Square in New York City, as he has for the last 13 years, with live onsite reporting from actress and comedian Jenny McCarthy. Multi-platinum music superstar Ciara will ring in the New Year from the West Coast as the host of the Hollywood Party, joined by performances from Kelsea Ballerini, The Chainsmokers, Foster the People, Dua Lipa, Ella Mai and Charlie Puth, as well as collaborations from Macklemore with Skylar Grey presented by Planet Fitness and The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini. Award-winning actress Lucy Hale will return to host the 3rdannual Central Time Zone celebration from New Orleans, providing viewers with exclusive performances and celebrity and fan interviews leading up to the midnight countdown and stunning fleur-de-lis drop near Jackson Square at the dawn of the New Year.
Post Malone stirs a mix of genres into his own sonic sound that’s both intoxicating and invigorating. His RIAA Platinum certified debut album, Stoney, led the genre-bending Dallas, TX artist to his first Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and first #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. With six nominations, the dark comedy “Vice” is the leading contender at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 6, 2019. The miniseries “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” which won several Emmy Awards, has the most Golden Globe nominations in the TV field, getting four nods. NBC will have the U.S. telecast of the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, which will be hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Dick Clark Productions is producing the show. The Golden Globe Awards are voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Eligible movies are those with U.S. release dates in 2018, while eligible TV shows were those that televised new episodes in the U.S. in 2018.
As expected, “Vice” (which could be considered a drama or a dark comedy) was nominated in the Musical or Comedy categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor (for Christian Bale, who plays former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney in the movie); Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (for Amy Adams, who plays Lynne Cheney, Dick Cheney’s wife); Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (for Sam Rockwell, who plays former U.S. President George W. Bush); Best Director (for Adam McKay); and Best Screenplay.
The Peter Farrelly-directed “Green Book,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, picked up five nods, and faces off against “Vice” in all the same categories except Best Supporting Actress. “The Favourite,” which also received five nominations, is competing for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, while star Oliva Colman is up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. Other movies that have several nominations are “A Star Is Born,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” which received four nods each.
The nominations for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” include Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Also getting nominated are lead actor Darren Criss (who played serial killer Andrew Cunanan), supporting actor Édgar Ramírez (who played Gianni Versace) and supporting actress Penélope Cruz (who played Donatella Versace).
Other TV shows with several nominations are “The Americans,” “Barry,” “Homecoming,” “The Kominsky Method,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Sharp Objects,” which have three nods each. “The Americans” (which had its final season in 2018), “Barry” (which had its first season in 2018) and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (whose first season debuted in 2017) already won Emmys in 2018. Critically acclaimed new series “Homecoming,” “The Kominsky Method” and “Sharp Objects” premiered in the second half of 2018, and will be eligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards, as will the second season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” “Sharp Objects” star Amy Adams and “Seven Seconds” star Regina King have achieved a rare milestone of being nominated for a TV show and a movie in the same year at the Golden Globes. In the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Adams is nominated for “Vice,” while King received a nod for “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
Movie Snubs and Surprises
“First Man,” the drama about astronaut Neil Armstrong and his historic voyage as the first man on the moon, was considered an early frontrunner since it was was getting recognition at film festivals, but that buzz has considerably quieted due to criticism the movie has received for being emotionally distant and not patriotic enough. “First Man” also disappointed at the box office. “First Man,” directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, was snubbed in the two categories many people had predicted the movie would get nominated: Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. However, “First Man” did get nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (for Claire Foy, who plays Armstrong’s first wife Janet) and Best Original Score (for Justin Hurwitz, a previous winner of this award for “La La Land”). “First Reformed,” a drama starring Ethan Hawke as a clergyman with secrets, has been winning several awards from critics and at shows honoring independent films, but the movie was completely snubbed by the Golden Globes. And although “Mary Poppins Returns” received a nod for Best Original Score, the movie musical failed to get any nominations for Best Original Song. It should be noted that the Spanish-language “Roma,” which has been getting several critics’ awards, was not eligible for a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture because Golden Globe rules prevent a movie to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Foreign-Language Film. However, as expected, “Roma” is nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film, where it is a clear frontrunner.
As for surprises in the movie categories, the critically acclaimed blockbuster “Black Panther” made Golden Globes history as the first superhero movie to get a Best Picture nomination, although some awards pundits had predicted this nomination would happen. However, unlike all the other nominees in the Best Picture categories, “Black Panther” did not get any nominations for acting, directing or screenwriting, which does not bode well for the movie’s chances of winning. The little-seen independent film “A Private War,” starring Rosamund Pike as real-life war journalist Marie Colvin, picked up two nominations: Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Song (for Annie Lennox’s “Requiem for a Private War”). Meanwhile, Robert Redford was nominated for Best Actor for the dramatic film “The Old Man and the Gun,” but not in the category people would expect. His nomination was in the Musical or Comedy category, not Drama. The Golden Globes often get criticism for placing dramatic films in the musical or comedy categories, and this is another example of that misplacement.

In the TV categories, Emmy Award winners “Game of Thrones” and “The Crown” were ineligible for Golden Globe nominations this year since the shows did not have any new episodes in 2018. Previous Golden Globe winners “This Is Us,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Atlanta” failed to get nominations in the Best Series categories. “This Is Us” was completely shut out of the race by not getting any Golden Globe nods, which might indicate that Golden Globe voters have grown weary of “This Is Us” melodrama. “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Atlanta” were snubbed, respectively, in the categories of Best Drama Series and Best Musical or Comedy Series, although the show’s stars (Elisabeth Moss of “A Handmaid’s Tale” and Donald Glover of “Atlanta”) did get nominated for their leading roles in the series. “Westworld” only received one nomination: Best Supporting Actress (for Thandie Newton, who won an Emmy this year for her role in “Westworld”). “House of Cards,” which had its final season in 2018, used to get multiple Golden Globe nominations, but was completely shut out of the race again this year. It seems that the sexual misconduct scandals of former “House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey still have had repercussions for the show. And multiple Emmy winner “Saturday Night Live,” which has never really been celebrated at the Golden Globes, failed to get any Golden Globe nominations again this year.

TV nomination surprises include three new series: “Kidding” received two nods: Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (for Jim Carrey, who stars in series as the host of a children’s TV show). “Pose,” about drag-queen culture in New York City, also picked up two nods: Best Television Series – Drama and Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama (for Billy Porter). “Bodyguard,” another surprise nominee, is competing in the same two categories as “Pose,” with Richard Madden up for the Best Actor prize. All three shows, which premiered in the second half of 2018, will be eligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards. Meanwhile, even though the “Murphy Brown” revival received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and has now be canceled, the comedy show’s star Candice Bergen received a surprise nomination.

Sandra Oh, star of the critically acclaimed BBC America drama series “Killing Eve,” and Andy Samberg, star of NBC’s Golden Globe-winning comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” will co-host the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The three-hour telecast will air live on NBC coast to coast Sunday, January 6 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton.
The Golden Globes serve as the official kickoff to the 2019 awards season. Winners in 25 categories — 14 in film and 11 in television — are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Oh currently serves as co-executive producer and earned an Emmy Award nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama for BBC America’s “Killing Eve” as Eve Polastri, an MI5 officer who hunts down and becomes entangled with a cold-blooded female assassin. Previously, Oh starred as Dr. Cristina Yang on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” for which she won a 2006 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Female Actor in a Drama Series and five Emmy nominations for Supporting Actress in a Drama. Oh’s film credits include “Sideways,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Catfight” and “Meditation Park,” and she produced the animated film “Window Horses: The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming” as well as voicing the title character.
In 2014, Samberg was a two-time Golden Globe winner for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy and as a producer on the show for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Prior to that, Samberg was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” from 2005-12. His work on NBC’s iconic late night franchise earned him an Emmy Award and six additional Emmy nominations for his work with The Lonely Island and their digital shorts. The Lonely Island has also been nominated for three Grammys. In 2015, Samberg hosted the 67th annual Primetime Emmy® Awards and in 2013, hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

The Golden Globe Awards, often referred to as “Hollywood’s Party of the Year,” is one of the biggest nights on the calendar for live viewing. It’s also one of the few awards shows that combine the honorees of both film and television.
The 2018 Golden Globe Awards telecast averaged a 5.0 rating in adults 18-49 and 19 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, putting it ahead of every show on television from the previous 10 months in total viewers, since the prior year’s Academy Awards. Dick Clark Productions and ABC today announced hosts and musical performances for America’s biggest live New Year’s television broadcast, “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019.” Emmy®-winning producer and television/radio personality Ryan Seacrest will return to host from Times Square for his 13th year, with live onsite reporting by actress and comedian Jenny McCarthy. Multi-platinum music superstar Ciara will return to ring in the New Year from the West Coast as the host of the Hollywood Party, joined by performances from Kelsea Ballerini, The Chainsmokers, Foster the People, Dua Lipa, Ella Mai and Charlie Puth. The festivities will also feature a performance by Macklemore with Skylar Grey presented by Planet Fitness, and a special collaboration from The Chainsmokers featuring Kelsea Ballerini. Also announced today, award-winning actress Lucy Hale will return to host the 3rdannual Central Time Zone celebration from New Orleans, providing viewers with exclusive performances and interviews leading up to the midnight countdown and stunning fleur-de-lis drop near Jackson Square at the dawn of the New Year.
Ranked as the #1 music special of 2017, “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019” marks the 47th anniversary of America’s biggest celebration of the year and will include 5 ½ hours of special performances and reports on New Year’s festivities from around the globe. The celebrated event will take place on MONDAY, DECEMBER 31 beginning at 8:00 p.m. EST on the ABC Television Network. Additional performances will be announced soon.

Jenny McCarthy is a comedian, actress, host, best-selling author and spokeswoman, who currently hosts her own talk show, “The Jenny McCarthy Show,” on Sirius XM, and will soon be seen as a panelist on the celebrity singing competition “The Masked Singer,” which premieres on FOX in January 2019. Multi-talented and dynamic, Lucy Hale captured the attention of millions as the star of Freeform’s smash hit series “Pretty Little Liars.” Hale was nominated for People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Actress in 2017. She has also won a Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Actress seven times and she was presented with the 2013 Gracie Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Rising Star. Hale was recently seen starring in the thriller “Truth or Dare” from Blumhouse Productions alongside Tyler Posey which was released in April 2018. Dick Clark Productions announced today that actress Awkwafina will host the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday, November 4 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Deep in the midst of her star-making moment with key roles in the hit films “Oceans 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” the recent “SNL” host will take the stage alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment to lead the audience through an incredible night of honoring the best in film.

ABOUT THE HOST Awkwafina is an American actress, writer, rapper and musician from Queens, New York. Awkwafina, whose given name is Nora Lum, brings an impressive range of talent peppered with her signature flair, and has become a major breakout talent of summer 2018. Lum can most recently be seen on the big screen as Peik Lin in Warner Bros’ “Crazy Rich Asians” opposite Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding & Ken Jeong. The film opened August 15, 2018 to rave reviews. She also hosted “Saturday Night Live” on October 6, 2018 in the show’s 44th Season. Dick Clark Productions announced today that the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards will bestow the Hollywood Documentary Award to Live Nation Productions’ “Believer,” the story of Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds as he comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation. Reynolds, who also served as Executive Producer on the film, will be accepting the award at the ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton. As part of the ceremony, Reynolds, producer Tim Edgar and award-winning composer Hans Zimmer will also take the HFA stage to deliver a performance of “Believer’s”empowering track “Skipping Stones.” The song is one of two original tracks that are featured in the documentary. “Believer” is a film based on Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds who comes to a crossroads when he witnesses fellow members of the Mormon church spurned due to their sexual orientation. Since 2008, teen suicide rates in Utah have skyrocketed, which many people attribute to the Mormon church’s official stance regarding same-sex relationships. Director Don Argott follows Dan and openly gay former Mormon Tyler Glenn, lead singer of Neon Trees, as they decide to create LoveLoud, a music and spoken-word festival designed to spark dialogue between the church and members of the LGBTQ community.
Dan Reynolds, a third generation Las Vegas native, is lead singer for the Grammy winning band Imagine Dragons. Born to a family of nine children, Dan grew up writing and recording music before beginning his studies at Brigham Young University and later UNLV. Dan left his schooling to form Imagine Dragons, which had its start making ends meet playing casinos and bars in Las Vegas before signing to KidinaKorner/Interscope Records. The band has since sold over 12 million albums and 35 million singles worldwide. In 2016, Dan formed Interscope imprint Night Street Records, whose first signing K.Flay was nominated for two 2018 Grammy Awards. Having publicly expressed his concern for the rising suicide rate in LGBTQ+ youth, Dan founded the LOVELOUD Foundation in 2017 to bring awareness to the growing crisis. Its mission is to bring communities together by igniting the vital conversation of what it means to unconditionally love, understand, accept, and support our LGBTQ+ family and friends. Dan also currently serves as a board member for The Tyler Robinson Foundation, a charity he co-founded which helps support pediatric cancer families in financial distress.

John David Washington garnered critical acclaim for starring in “BlacKkKlansman,” directed by Spike Lee and produced by Jason Blum and Jordan Peele. Yalitza Aparicio was born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca in 1993. She holds a degree in education and aspires to become a teacher upon completion of her exams, but also has additional opportunities ahead of her since the film “Roma”has been completed. Aparicio went to her local community center to accompany her sister to the casting call and ended up trying out and being selected. She is very close with another actress from “Roma,”Nancy García, who lives in a nearby town in Oaxaca. Aparicio also developed strong relationships with the child actors that formed her family on set. Aparicio took advantage of working in Mexico City and visited Chapultepec Park and the pyramids of Teotihuacán. She loved being on set and seeing how spaces were transformed. She also enjoyed working with Cuarón and building the relationship of trust they came to share.
Felix Van Groeningen is a Flemish director, screenwriter and producer. This is his first English-language film. His previous film, “Belgica,” premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where he won the Directing Award (Dramatic World Cinema). Van Groeningen’s internationally acclaimed breakthrough “The Broken Circle Breakdown” earned a 2014 Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and a César for Best Foreign Film. Previously, “The Misfortunates”premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. Van Groeningen is a graduate of Belgium’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He currently resides in Antwerp, Belgium.

Dick Clark Productions announced that Nicole Kidman, a multi-award-winning actress known for her fearlessness and intelligence, will receive the Hollywood Career Achievement Award at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards. Her selection for this award is a tribute to the versatility of her performances over the years, with characters as diverse and extraordinary as an aspiring television personality with a dark motive in Gus Van Zant’s “To Die For” to the iconic and complicated Virginia Woolf in “The Hours”; from a wife who, with her husband, embarks on an odyssey of sexual and moral discovery in Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” to Satine, the singing and dancing courtesan in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!”; and from the unguarded adoptive mother of an orphan boy longing to help others in need in Garth Davis’ “Lion” to a woman on the run who pays a huge price to be hidden in Lars von Triers’ controversial and thrilling “Dogville.” With three films coming out before the end of this year, Kidman has already received praise for her transformative performance in Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer”and in Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased.”
In addition to her chameleonic performances, Kidman is also being recognized for her career-long support of independent filmmakers, particularly women. Through her production company, Blossom Films, she has taken this to a new level. Among the many projects she has produced, last year’s “Big Little Lies” was a phenomenon that entered not only the cultural, but the social zeitgeist.
In addition, critically acclaimed actors Timothée Chalamet and Rachel Weisz will receive the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award and Hollywood Supporting Actress Award, respectively, at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards. Chalamet will be honored for his exquisite work in Amazon Studio’s “Beautiful Boy,” while Weisz will be recognized for her role in Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite,” a festival breakout. The 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards will take place on Sunday, November 4 at The Beverly Hilton.
The Hollywood Film Awards, honoring the most acclaimed films and actors while previewing highly anticipated films and talent for the upcoming year, also acknowledges artists in the categories of Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Composing, Costume Design, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Makeup & Hairstyling. In its 22-year history, more than 320 of the world’s biggest stars and filmmakers have been highlighted at the Hollywood Film Awards and more than 130 of the honorees have gone on to garner Oscar nominations and/or wins.
ABOUT THE HONOREES
Nicole Kidman – Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman first came to the attention of American audiences with her critically acclaimed performance in Phillip Noyce’s riveting Australian psychological thriller “Dead Calm.” Kidman has since become an internationally recognized actress known for her range, versatility and dedication to her craft.
In 2002, Kidman was honored with her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Baz Luhrmann’s innovative musical “Moulin Rouge!” For that role, and her performance in writer/director Alejandro Amenabar’s psychological thriller “The Others,” she received dual 2002 Golden Globe nominations, winning for Best Actress in a Musical. The following year, Kidman won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and a Berlin Silver Bear for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours.” She has since been nominated for a total of four Academy Awards – winning one – 12 Golden Globes – winning four.
This fall, Kidman can be seen starring in Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased,” opposite Lucas Hedges and Russell Crowe, and James Wan’s “Aquaman.” Most recently, Kidman gave an award-winning performance and produced the HBO limited series “Big Little Lies,” for which she received an Emmy Award, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award. Big Little Lies also received an Emmy Award, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for Outstanding Limited Series. Kidman’s production company, Blossom Films, which she created with Per Saari, recently completed production on the second season of Big Little Lies, directed by Andrea Arnold.
In 2018, Kidman and Blossom signed a first-look deal with Amazon Studios. Under the agreement, she will develop theatrical and series content, the first of which being a new drama series, “The Expatriates,” based off the novel by Janice Y.K Lee. With their “Big Little Lies” co-producers Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, Blossom Films is also adapting Liane Moriarty’s novel “Truly Madly Guilty” into a limited series. Kidman will also produce and star in Moriarty’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” to which Blossom Films and Papandrea’s Made Up Stories acquired the rights for a film or TV series. Blossom’s next project is David E. Kelley’s limited series “The Undoing,” which will go into production in 2019 and star Kidman.
Kidman had four projects debut at Cannes Film Festival last year – Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake: China Girl, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” and John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” She will next be seen in “The Upside” and “The Goldfinch,” a movie adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Kidman, who began her acting career in Australia, is the recipient of several awards, but one of her most rewarding roles has been her fearless work as a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador since 2006. Her efforts are geared toward raising awareness about women’s rights around the world, with a focus on violence against women.
Timothée Chalamet has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Nic Sheff in “Beautiful Boy,” directed Felix Van Groeningen in select theaters this month. “Beautiful Boy,” based on the memoirs “Beautiful Boy” by David Sheff and “Tweak” by his son Nic Sheff, chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring story of survival and recovery in a family coping with addition. Chalamet is currently filming “Little Women” with director Greta Gerwig, and this spring will star in “Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve. Chalamet recently wrapped production on “The King” which will be released in 2019.
Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz will next star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” alongside Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Nicholas Hoult. The film premiered to rave reviews at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival and New York Film Festival and will be released by Fox Searchlight on November 23, 2018. She recently produced and starred in Sebastián Lelio’s “Disobedience,” alongside Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola. The film, which is based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews, was released by Bleecker Street in April, and releases in the UK on November 30.

With four prizes, including Artist of the Year, Taylor Swift was the top winner at the 2018 American Music Awards, which were presented on October 9 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Camila Cabello, a former member of Fifth Harmony, also won four American Music Awards, including New Artist of the Year. Cabello was an opening act for Swift on Swift’s “Reputation” tour. Tracee Ellis Ross hosted the American Music Awards show for the second year in a row. The awards are voted for online by the public.
Swift now has 23 American Music Awards, the most ever won by a female artist. The previous record holder was Whitney Houston, who won 21 American Music Awards.
At the 2018 ceremony, Swift also did her first award-show performance in more than two years. She opened the 2018 American Music Awards with “I Did Something Bad.” Swift was one of several people on the show, including Ross and presenter Billy Eichner, who urged people to vote in their upcoming political elections.
With eight nominations each, Cardi B and Drake were the top nominees for the 2018 American Music Awards, but Drake (who did not attend the ceremony) did not win any of the prizes. Cardi B won three American Music Awards, and so did Kane Brown. Post Malone won two American Music Awards.
Other performers on the show included Twenty One Pilots (“Jumpsuit”), Carrie Underwood (“Spinning Bottles”), Cabello (“Consequences”), Mariah Carey (who sang the live world premiere of “With You”), Dua Lipa (who did a medley of “One Kiss” and “Electricity”), Jennifer Lopez (“Limitless”) and Ella Mai (“Boo’d Up”). Imagine Dragons had been announced as performers several weeks before the ceremony, but the band’s appearance was canceled with no explanation.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” stars Rami Malek, Joseph Mazzello and Gwilym Lee introduced Panic! At the Disco, which performed Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” from a concert in Brisbane, Australia.
There were also several on-stage collaborations. Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin performed their hit song “I Like It” on television for the first time. Benny Blanco joined forces with Halsey and Khalid for their hit “Eastside.” Ciara featuring Missy Elliott did a medley of “Level Up” and “Dose.” Post Malone was joined by Ty Dolla $ign for their hit “Psycho” after Malone performed “Better Now.” Shawn Mendes paired with Zedd for “Lost in Japan.” Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans closed out the show did a special tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died of pancreatic cancer on August 16, 2018.
