Between these efforts, Nordstrom hopes to give $350,000 in support of the Transgender community.

“We’ve long believed that we’re all made better by the diversity that exists both within our communities and our workforce. Our values are centered on the notion of creating a place where every customer and employee is welcome, respected, appreciated and able to be their authentic selves,” said Farrell Redwine, senior vice president of human resources, Nordstrom, Inc. “This year, we are honored to partner with Trans Lifeline to extend those values and support the transgender community in accessing resources that make their lives easier.”

Department store decline: Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, JCPenney closing more stores in 2019

January 28, 2019

by Daphne Sorenson

department store retail

The decline of department stores continues to affect the retail industry, as Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom and JCPenney have announced that they will be closing more stores in early 2019. It’s part of a trend that is hitting fashion retail especially hard, since about half of the retailers that closed the largest number of stores in 2018 have fashion as their core business. Kohl’s will be shuttering all of its stores that are located in shopping malls, while almost all of the stores that Macy’s, Nordstom and JCPenney are closing are also located in shopping malls.

Many of the stores that are closing are not in economically depressed areas but are in areas with middle- or high-income levels, with the highest-income levels in places such as New York City’s Rego Park area; the San Francisco Bay Area’s Silicon Valley; West Los Angeles (near Beverly Hills); Redmond, Washington (a suburb of Seattle); and Fairfax County, Virginia. That’s probably because customers in these high-income areas are more likely to have the resources (credit cards with high credit lines) to do more online shopping than people with lower incomes. But that’s only part of the reason why these stores are closing. Based on customer review sites such as Yelp, these stores have been plagued for quite some time with complaints about bad customer service, declining appearance/cleanliness and unsatisfactory inventory.

According to Business Insider, these are the stores that will be closing in 2019:

Kohl’s
Kohl’s Rego Park at Rego Center in Rego Park, New York
Kohl’s Valley Stream at Green Acres Mall in South Valley Stream, New York
Kohl’s Lenexa in Lenexa, Kansas
Kohl’s Houma at Houma Crossing Mall in Bayou Cane, Louisiana

JCPenney
Three stores to be announced.

Macy’s
Macy’s at Casper Eastridge in Casper, Wyoming
Macy’s at Redmond Town Center in Redmond, Washington
Macy’s at Sunnyvale Town Center in Sunnyvale, California
Macy’s Furniture Gallery at Westside Pavilion in Los Angeles, California
Macy’s at Glendale Mall in Indianapolis, Indiana
Macy’s at Swansea Mall in Swansea, Massachusetts
Macy’s at Tysons Galleria in McLean, Virginia
Macy’s at Nanuet Mall in Nanuet, New York
Macy’s at Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia

Nordstrom
Nordstrom at The Mall at Wellington Green in Wellington, Florida
Nordstrom at MacArthur Center Mall in Norfolk, Northern Virginia

COMMUNITY

Nike Men’s Project at Nordstrom Men’s Store NYC (PRNewsfoto/Nordstrom, Inc.)

Nordstrom believes we have a responsibility to give back to the communities we serve, so each year we donate 1% of our gift card sales to worthy nonprofits in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Our contributions most often take the form of a cash grant, but we are also proud to partner with local and national organizations through specific giving programs and by volunteering our time and resources.

As part of our Men’s Store opening and as we continue to expand our presence in the New York metro area we have committed $5 million dollars to NYC over the next three years. To stay true to our Nordstrom Cares mission we plan to support a number of programs and organizations that care for kids and empower youth, as well as those that have a significant impact on the community. In the coming months, Nordstrom will be forming a NYC Community Advisory Board to attract, vet and award community grants. We are proud to announce our first grant will be to the Hetrick-Martin Institute, the nation’s oldest, and largest, organization supporting gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth to reach their full potential.

The following is an excerpt from a Nordstrom press release:

Goop, the modern lifestyle brand founded by Gwyneth Paltrow, is partnering with Nordstrom to bring goop’s coveted retail curation to Pop-In@Nordstrom in select stores across the country and online. This is the first-time goop is working with a major retailer in this capacity, and the first-time goop has a concurrent retail presence in multiple markets at once.

goop-In@Nordstrom features a mix of wellness-focused products curated by the goop team, spanning across apparel, accessories, beauty and home. Each shop is merchandised as an enclosed living space, with furniture and design by 1stDibs and custom Chinoiserie wallcoverings by Fromental.

Products include both goop’s own lines of luxury skincare, wellness, apparel and fragrance, as well as hand-picked items from goop’s digital shop. The buy aims to translate goop’s holistic approach to wellness into a tangible experience, with products mostly fitting into one of three categories: what we put on our bodies, what we put in our bodies and how we treat our bodies. This is the first wellness-focused retail concept for both goop and Pop-In@Nordstrom.

“Our pop-ups have been an incredible opportunity to really connect with our readers and shoppers across the country—this partnership with Nordstrom allows us to provide that experience on a heightened level of scale, touching new markets and shoppers in the process,” said Gwyneth Paltrow, Founder and CEO, goop.

In recent months, wellness – historically one of goop’s most popular verticals – has become an even bigger focus for the lifestyle brand. In March, goop launched their first wellness product extension: a collection of vitamins created in collaboration with four leading doctors. goop Wellness hit over $100k in sales on launch day. Recently, goop announced their first-ever wellness summit, In goop Health, and a wellness-focused content partnership with Conde Nast.

Pop-In@Nordstrom is the retailer’s ongoing series of themed pop-up shops developed and curated by Kim, built on the notion of discovery as a way to create energy, inspiration and disruption throughout the retailer’s highest profile stores. Each shop transitions every four to six weeks in a new design to offer exclusive finds under a unique theme, introducing new brands and merchandise to keep customers coming back for a fun and compelling shopping experience in stores and online.
